Factors that influence school psychologists' special education eligibility decisions

    No full text
School psychologists constantly make decisions that affect the lives of children and their families. One of the most significant decisions they make is determining a child’s eligibility for Special Education and related services. Despite the importance of eligibility decisions there is little research examining the decision making practices of school psychologists. Thus, this study was designed to examine the effect of three factors, the race of the child (Caucasian vs. African American), the socioeconomic status (SES) of the child (low vs. middle) and the referral source (parent versus teacher referral) on school psychologists’ decisions and judgments. Eight versions of a hypothetical case of a child potentially eligible for special education were developed, representing the factorial combinations of the three variables. Participants who agreed to complete the on- line survey were randomly assigned to one of the versions of the case materials (which included the case vignette, referral information and test scores). Other than the differences on the three independent variables, the versions of the materials were identical. Participants (N=158) were asked to indicate if they believed the child was classifiable and to rate their confidence in their decision and the difficulty of the classification decision. A 2x2x2 ANOVA was conducted to evaluate the effects of the race of the child, the SES of the child and the referral source on school psychologists’ classification decision. Results indicate that the race of the child and the referral source did not affect school psychologists’ decisions to classify the hypothetical student. However, results yielded a marginally significant main effect for SES on eligibility decisions, with lower SES students being more likely to be classified. An additional analysis evaluated the effects of the aforementioned factors on participants’ level of confidence in their decision. The three-way interaction between race, referral source, and SES was significant. Also, the interaction between race and SES was marginally significant. The main effects of race, SES, and referral source were not significant. Finally, a 2x2x2 ANOVA of the difficulty ratings yielded a marginally significant three- way interaction between race, referral source and SES. Results are discussed and implications for school psychologists are suggested.Psy.DIncludes bibliographical referencesby Mikaela Bacho

A great depression dampened his spirit the further he swam from home and the more unfamiliar his surroundings became. Worst of all, it seemed as though the further he got from Pokegama, the more the human’s grip on the land strengthened...” In this short story for young adult readers, science communicator Mikaela Serio follows a young wetland creature on a journey of discovery through the mighty St. Louis River estuary at the headwaters of Lake Superior, questing to know the answer to his questions- Are these humans good? Are they dangerous? And what exactly are they up to?This work was funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration through the NOAA Hollings Scholarship program with support from UW-Madison Division of Extension

Primary production control of food in Sweden How does the county administrative boards work with improvements?     Author: Mikaela Stenlund   Abstract The county administrative boards are the responsible administrative authority for the primary production control of food in Sweden. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the county administrative boards work with improvements on primary production control of food, compared to some aspects from the Swedish National Audit Office report RIR 2014:12 and if any improvements can be seen at the present time. A survey was performed to find out if any improvement had been made. The survey included both quantitative and qualitative questions about food control, registration, control frequency, cooperation, resources and competence. 18 of the 21 county administrative boards answered the survey. The result from the survey indicate improvements in some fields of the primary production control of food, compared to the report RIR 2014:12. Areas that indicated improvements are an increased control frequency of registered primary production producers and that there were an increased proportion of registrations of the primary production producers that are required to register. Cooperation between the county administrative boards in addition to contacts for advice and support also indicated improvements.     Keywords: primary production, food control, official control, cross complienc

Author: Mikaela Bryland Title: To see the invisible children – about children with parents suffering from mental illness and the consequences of the search for normality and the avoidance of stigmatisation [translated title] Supervisor: Gunilla Fredin Assessor: Sune Sunesson The purpose of this study was to examine the children with parents suffering from mental illness and their situation when the search for normality and the avoidance of stigmatisation effectively have consequences on the search for help. The aim was to analyse how much the search for normality and the avoidance of stigmatisation have on the children’s lives. In the investigation, interviews were made with professional social workers in contact with the children of mentally ill parents. The analysis was based on two theory branches of symbolic interactionism, the theory of norms and the search for normality and the theory of labelling and stigmatisation. As a conclusion, the investigation shows the implications of the view of mental illness in society on the children and families living with mental illness, as it is stigmatised in a negative manner. Because of the stigmatization of mental illness, the children do not get in contact with the support they would need, and therefore, the invisibility of the children continue. Abstract Author: Mikaela Persson Title: Who suffers the most from mental health? A quantitative study about mental health among young adults in Italy and Sweden Supervisor: Anna Tegunimataka Assessor: Anders Östnäs The aim of this study was to compare mental health among Sweden’s and Italy’s young adults by using three variables which were then correlated with the variable “mental health”. The three variables I used were; “Family and social relations”, “Religion and Tradition” and “Socio-economic factors”. To conduct the research I used the database European Social Survey to obtain data from Italy as well as Sweden. SPSS was used to manage the data and thereby calculate the bivariate correlations to sustain the correlation coefficient and significance level. I could then recognize whether or not there were correlations between mental health and the three variables. I found that the young adults in Sweden relied more on their socio-economic well-being to have good mental health, while the Italian respondents had a greater relationship between high scores in “Religion and Tradition” and low scores in mental health. The results also showed that both the Swedish and Italian young adults had less mental health issues if they lived a family- and social-centred life. Key words: young adults, mental health, Italy, Sweden, socio-economic factors, family and social-relations, religion and tradition Nyckelord: unga vuxna, psykisk ohälsa, Italien, Sverige, socio-ekonomiska faktorer, familj och sociala-relationer, religion och traditio

Abstract Author: Mikaela Johansson Borg Title: The values of life - a study of how our life values changes during the years of development. Supervisor: Anders Östnäs Assessor: Christina Erneling The purpose of the study was to describe and analyze of life values based upon different ages, in order to make comparison between them. Life values mean what you as an individual state as the most important in your life, the basic values you have with your life. A life value can for example be love, religion or money. The different categories of ages in the study were set as 20-25, 40-45 and 60-65. In total 150 people have participated, with a split of 50 people per category. I have used a quantified research method with surveys in the study. The people within each category have evaluated their seven life values with help of a scale of 1-7. The different life values were the following: To make a career and/or secure a good economic situation, to perceive harmony and balance, to support other and be of value for people, the family and friends are the focus, to travel, to reach a position with influence and to unite with religion and spirituality. The result has shown that our life values differ based upon ages where some values during the development which become more important and some values less important. ABSTRACT Title: Estate agent is a trusted profession - a study of how real estate broker working on Codes of Conduct Level: Final assignment for Bachelor Degree in Business Administration Author: Mikaela Karlsson Supervisor: Agneta Sundström Date: 2012 – June Aim: There is a lack of confidence in the branch of real estate which makes me wonder: How do the bransch of real estate work with Code of Conduct to strengthen their confidence? The aim is to describe and analyze how the branch of real estate works with confidence and codes of conduct. Method: I have an qualitative approach in which interviews have been used to collect data and literature studies to collect theoretical information. The collected material have been analyzed from a hermeneutical perspective. Result & Conclusions: To some extent the real estate branch works with the establishment of Codes of Conduct to strengthen the confidence. This is shown by increased transparency to increase customers commitment in the bidding. As confidence has been risen for the part of the process this indicate that Codes Of Conduct has the ability to strengthen the confidence for the real estate as a branch. Suggestions for future research: One topic that is interesting to study is how the real estate brokerage companies could controll their stakeholders to follow the company´s guidelines for social responsibility. Contribution of the thesis: The thesis gives people involved in real estate branch suggestions on how a trust could be built up by working with Codes of Conduct. Newborn Hypoglycemia: Analyzing the Effectiveness of Glucose Gel and Intravenous Glucose

    No full text
Objective: To improve the recognition and treatment of neonatal hypoglycemia by investigating the effectiveness of glucose gel compared to intravenous glucose in stabilizing blood sugar levels. Background: The Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine (ABM) recognized that the symptoms of neonatal hypoglycemia were consistent with various metabolic conditions and prompt intervention was imperative. The initial management of neonatal hypoglycemia focused on increasing the quality and quantity of feedings and admitting newborns to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Recent literature has demonstrated that the implementation of glucose gel is less-invasive, effectively regulates neonatal hypoglycemia, and promotes maternal-infant bonding. The creation of a definitive definition and diagnostic parameters for neonatal hypoglycemia is pertinent for improving the current treatment modalities. Significance: Complications associated with untreated neonatal hypoglycemia have the potential to adversely impact infants' physical and cognitive development. Without a formalized treatment protocol, healthcare personnel could observe an inverse relationship between the incidence of NICU admissions and normal development. Methods: An in-depth exploration of PubMed, CINHAL, and NCBI, based on the level of evidence, revealed that a universal definition has not been implemented into practice and that the use of intravenous glucose was the preferred method of treatment. The search terms utilized were prematurity (34-36/7 weeks), neonatal hypoglycemia, glucose gel versus intravenous glucose, and stabilized blood sugar levels. Results: Rawat et al. (2016) determined that administering 200 mg/kg of 40% dextrose gel into the buccal mucosa reduced the incidence of mother-infant separation for treatment and suggested that dextrose gel should be the golden standard for treating neonatal hypoglycemia. Discussion: The ABM recommended the development of a well-controlled study that establishes the connection between the clinical signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia and plasma glucose concentration. The formulation of an all-encompassing protocol that reflects the demand for an evidence-based treatment approach for neonatal hypoglycemia is crucial.Winner of the 2020 Friends of the Kreitzberg Library Award for Outstanding Research in the Freshman/Sophomore Science/Technical category
