The Negro in the novels of Rene Maran, 1940
This study of the Negro in the novels of Rene Maran, Frances most prominent contemporary Negro author, is one of several being made at Atlanta University on the Negro in French literature. This attempt to-show how a Negro, the only one ever to receive the Prix Goncourt, portrays his African brothers, is the first American study of Rene Maran's novels. It is hoped that it will be a modest contribution to an almost unexplored field in French literature and that other students of France and her culture will be inspired to make a more extensive study of Rene Maran and his works. The first chapter is devoted to the life of Rene Maran and a discussion of his style and most important works. The second chapter presents the physical characteristics of the Negro as portrayed by Rene' Maran. Emphasis is placed on physical appearance, tribal marks, dress, disease and odors which seem to be especially characteristic of the Negro. The third chapter is devoted to the social characteristics of the Negro with emphasis on home life, food, religion, feasts, and governments. The last chapter will present a summary of the findings of this study. The appendix includes short synopses of each of the novels with Negro characters, and a latter from Monsieur Maran to the writer. aIt is to be regretted that such a small amount of material has been written on Rene Maran. Because of his modesty he has written even less about himself. Biographical material consists principally of Leon Bocquet's "Preface" to le Petit Roi de Chimerie, a fairy story by Rene Maran; le Coeur serre, an autobiography written as a novel; several articles which have appeared in periodicals and the forementioned letter from Monsieur Maran. First editions of all novels, with exception of Le Livre de la brousse, were used. As the latter was unavailable, the second edition (1937) was used. Rene Maran's most important novels on Africa, Batouala, Djouma, Chien de brousse, Le Journal sans date end le Livre de la brousse have been studied. The novelettes Bokorro and Bassarragba have also been used as references but the longer novels have constituted our major interest. Le Petit Roi de Chimerie , though it contains no Negro characters, was quoted because of one excellent example of Rene Maran's style. Less stress has been placed on Le Journal sans date because only one of its characters is a Negro. The writer sincerely appreciates the kindness and help of Rene Maran, whose letter was a source of constant encouragement
Removal of internal porosity in Supral 150 by hot isostatic pressing
In recent years, considerable concern has been shown about the
effects SPF cavitation has on the mechanical properties of superplastic
alloys. This investigation was undertaken to ascertain
whether Hot Isostatic Pressure (HIP) eliminated this cavitation in
Supral 150 and correspondingly brought about an improvement in the
mechanical properties.
It was found that the density increased with various isothermal
anneals; the activation energy for this process was close to that
for grain boundary diffusion in aluminium (61.93 KJ mol-1).
The rate of cavity sintering was seen experimentally to be
enhanced by the application of pressures greater than 7 HPa, and had
an activation energy of 62.42KJ mol-1.
Complete cavity closure occurred when the external pressure was
greater than the flow stress of the material at thaý temperature
and strain-rate; the ratio of external pressure (Pe) to flow stress
(of) increased with falling HIP temperature. The activation energy
at constant strain-rate (Q-) associated with plastic flow under
conditions of hole closure
was found to be 53.54KJ mol-1; giving
a corresponding activation energy at constant stress (Qa), which is
close to that for lattice diffusion in aluminium.
The alloy used contained a high level of hydrogen which caused
blistering on heat treatment, and was also responsible for the
reappearance of porosity in subsequently heat-treated material
previously returned to theoretical density; the extent of which was
decreased by the use of higher temperatures and pressures or by
vacuum degassing the material prior to HIP.
Post SPF room temperature ductility was enhanced by HIP. The
scatter in the 0.2% PS and UTS values found in as-received SPF
specimens was not altered by the use of low pressure HIP (up to
35 MPa), although higher pressures (100 NPa) did slightly enhance
these values and drastically reduced the scatter.
Room temperature fracture of as-received Supral was by a 450
ductile shear mechanism.
In the SPF cavitated material, the external characteristics Of
fracture had a more jagged appearance, as the cavitation alters the
route of the propagating crack.
SPF material which has been HIPped to remove cavitation, fails
in a manner similar to the as-received material

FDBB: Fluid dynamics building blocks
High-performance computing platforms are becoming more and more heterogeneous, which makes it very difficult for researchers and scientific software developers to keep up with the rapid changes on the hardware market. In this paper, the open-source project FDBB (Fluid Dynamics Building Blocks) is presented, which eases the development of fluid dynamics applications for heterogeneous systems. It consists of a low-level API that provides a unified interface to many different linear algebra back-ends and a lightweight and extendible high-level expression template library, which provides largely customizable fluid dynamics building blocks, like transformations between primary and secondary variables as well as expressions for Riemann invariants, equations of state, inviscid fluxes and their flux-Jacobians. The performance of the developed approach is assessed both for synthetic micro-benchmarks and within mini-applications.Accepted Author ManuscriptNumerical Analysi
Investigation of the gap vortex street in densely packed tube arrays in axial flow using CFD and experiments
Axial flow in tube bundles with small pitch-to-diameter ratio, a geometry encountered in nuclear reactor cores and heat exchangers, often displays periodic fluctuations. A significant velocity discrepancy between the inter-cylinder gap and subchannel center originates from the difference in through-flow area, feeding an instability. As it is associated with velocity-shear, it is similar to the Kelvin-Helmholtz type and the term 'gap instability' is adopted. A vortex street arises and structural vibration of the cylinders might develop due to the fluctuating pressure. Numerical simulations of this phenomenon were performed. The computational domain was constructed to match the most important geometrical features of an experimental setup. The bundle consists of 7 steel tubes in triangular array, placed in a hexagonal conduit. A flexible segment made of silicone is embedded in the central tube, with both extremes clamped to the steel parts of the cylinder. In the experiment, data of the fluctuating velocity was gathered using laser Doppler anemometry measurements. As first step, a completely rigid structure was considered. Unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) simulations were used to test if this particular geometry also triggers the gap vortex street, which was the case. The phenomenon clearly appears as oscillations of the velocity components. Subsequently, fluid-structure interaction (FSI) simulations, taking into account the flexible part, allowed to assess the effect of the fluctuating flow field on the structure. A comparison between one-way and two-way coupled simulations was made.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.RST/Reactor Physics and Nuclear Material
Taylor least squares reconstruction technique for material point methods
The material point method (MPM) is an effective computational tool for simulating problems involving large deformations. However, its direct mapping of the material-point data to the background grid frequently leads to severe inaccuracies. The standard function reconstruction techniques can considerably decrease these errors, but do not always guarantee the conservation of the total mass and linear momentum as the MPM algorithm does. In this paper, we introduce a novel technique, called Taylor Least Squares (TLS), which combines the Least Squares approximation with Taylor basis functions to reconstruct functions from scattered data. Within each element, the TLS technique approximates quantities of interest, such as stress and density, and when used with a suitable quadrature rule, it conserves the total mass and linear momentum after mapping the material-point information to the grid. The numerical and physical properties of the reconstruction technique are first illustrated on one- and two-dimensional functions. Then the TLS technique is tested as part of MPM, Dual Domain Material Point Method (DDMPM), and B-spline MPM (BSMPM) on a one-dimensional problem experiencing small and large deformations. The obtained results show that applying the TLS approximation significantly improves the accuracy of the considered versions of the material point method, while preserving the physical properties of the standard MPM.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Numerical Analysi
Spline-based meshing techniques for industrial applications
Isogeometric Analysis (IgA) has become an accepted framework for the mod-elling, simulation and optimization (MSO) of engineering processes. However, the fully automatized generation of analysis-suitable parameterizations of geometries as they arise in practical workflows is still a challenging task, which often requires application-specific parameterization approaches. In this article we present a practical approach [6] based on the principles of Elliptic Grid Generation (EGG) for the efficient on-demand generation of analysis-suitable spline-based parameterizations. Starting from a (point cloud) description of the boundary provided by the existing MSO-pipeline, an inverse nonlinear Poisson-type problem is solved to obtain a folding-free (planar) parameterization of the entire domain. The non-linearity is efficiently treated with a globalized hierarchical Newton approach. Automatized boundary contour reparameterization techniques are employed to improve the parametric properties from a numerical viewpoint, such as orthogonal isolines and equally-sized cells. The use of curved instead of straight-sided elements allows us to arrive at an accurate description of the target domain with fewer elements and thus potentially lower computational effort. Numerical experiments with screw-compressor geometries demonstrate that the proposed algorithm reliably produces high-quality parameterizations typically within 3−4 Newton-iterations, even in the presence of extreme aspect-ratios. This makes it particularly attractive for the on-demand application within an automatized industrial MSO-pipeline. To support the demands of modern high-performance computing hardware, only a moderate number of sufficiently large and structured patches is generated which can be mapped one-by-one to the different devices (CPUs/GPUs) with only little communication overhead. Topology changes are avoided in time-dependent and shape-optimization settings. Finally, the spline-based geometry description can be transformed into a classical mesh by performing a large number of function evaluations in the mapping operator. Its continuous nature allows for feature-based (structured and unstructured) refinement and arbitrary element densities without increasing the complexity of the meshing process.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Numerical Analysi
A Study on Fashion Design Applying the Image of Rene Magritte’s Works : Focused on Depaysement Technique
The modern fashion that pursues the personality, freedom, and creativity reflects the stream of time. The combination of art reflecting fashion and period representation technique as the trend of modern fashion for doing away with stereotype suggests various possibility of creation and wakes the aesthetic consciousness of potential human being with various designs. Surrealism that appeared as background provided possibility to develop creative designs on 20C had to pursue the overall awareness about human being by revealing the unconscious world having had under pressure and liberating the human. Especially, Rene Magritte (1898~1967) as the creative of surrealism denied automatism that was abstract representation technique. In addition, he did experience the mysteries of world with making normal from ordinary materials and the world of unique painting as well as paying attention and awaking think from us. The expression of Rene Magritte painting that was affected by Giorgio De Chirico makes to open the perspective of us having stereotype by revealing another hidden world of side of all reality.
The author offering the modern fashion design to match up between clothes and depaysement technique that the author studied and analyzed choosing Rene Magritte who was one of the surrealists.
As way of this study, The author referred like previous literatures, other theses, some books and magazines etc.
This study through theoretical consideration is as below.
First, The author analyzed the depaysement technique that is one of Rene Magritte’s main techniques and the world of his works.
Second, The author studied each feature and distribution to three representation techniques from Rene Magritte’s works along depaysement technique.
Third, The author made total 8 clothes applying main concept from image of Rene Magritte’s works.
These are result through theoretical studies.
First, The author have known that Rene Magritte among surrealism artists suggests the possibility of creative think with free arrangement each ordinary object and realistic through arts.
Second, about depaysement technique, main representation technique of Rene Magritte’s works, The author have known to be divided three ways so as the modulation of space, the combination of conflicting image, the transform and change of object.
Third, The author have suggested some examples which are variety and creative modern fashion design through expressive classification of Rene Magritte’s works.
The result that the author got from being made works based on these ideas is as below.
First, The author have confirmed the mind of artist and the expression of subconscious from Rene Magritte who wanted to prove depaysement technique or ideology of surrealism rather than just particular image with matching up fashion in his works.
Second, The author have presented new optical modeling space as being expressed the three-dimensional costume design that combines between body and two-dimensional painting when Rene Magritte’s works spread out for fashion design. Moreover, The author have known that the world of Rene Magritte’s works propose the creative idea to study of all-time modern fashion design and to be possible application to creative and differentiated image source due to graft the art onto the fashion.
Third, The author have known that classified images along three expression ways called the modulation of space, the combination of conflicting image, the transform and change of object in depaysement technique of Rene Magritte’s works suggest possibly spreading out various designs through combination with clothes.
Fourth, The author have known that depaysement which is one of surrealism’s representation technique can expend the width of imagination as being applied clothes by various view and practical use in materials or design elements. For that reason, it built the unique image applying realistic and ordinary objects inside Rene Magritte’s works.
Fifth, The author have known Digital Textile Printing (DTP) technique as the element of practical design is very well matching up expressing the image of Rene Magritte’s works to clothes.;개성과 자유, 독창적인 창의성을 추구하는 현대 패션은 시대적인 흐름과 예술을 반영한다.

Symbolic regression of algebraic stress-strain relation for RANS turbulence closure
In this work recent advancements are presented in utilising deterministic symbolic regression to infer algebraic models for turbulent stress-strain relation with sparsity-promoting regression techniques. The goal is to build a functional expression from a set of candidate functions in order to represent the target data most accurately. Targets are the coefficients of a polynomial tensor basis, which are identified from high-fidelity data using regularised least-square regression. The method successfully identified a correction term for the benchmark test case of flow over periodic hills in 2D at Reh = 10595.Aerodynamic
