https://doi.org/10.1016/j.indcrop.2013.12.052Guayule (Parthenium argentatum A. Gray) has tremendous potential as a domestic source of natural rubber production in the southwestern United States. However, genetic improvement of guayule has been slowed by its complex mode of reproduction, natural ploidy series, and lack of genetic and genomic resources. The interspecific hybridization of guayule with its closest sister taxon mariola (P. incanum Kunth) offers an opportunity to access novel genetic variation for guayule breeding programs, but mariola accessions available from the U.S. National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS) have never been evaluated for natural variation in ploidy level. In addition, the nuclear genome sizes for guayule and mariola at any ploidy level are unknown. To that end, we examined the ploidy of 10 mariola accessions, which revealed a natural polyploid series ranging from triploid (2n = 3x = 54) to pentaploid (2n = 5x = 90). In contrast, a ploidy analysis of five guayule accessions uncovered a natural polyploid series that ranged from diploid (2n = 2x = 36) to hexaploid (2n = 6x = 108). More than one ploidy level among individual plants (mixed ploidy) and instances of aneuploid plants were observed for accessions of both guayule and mariola. The nuclear genome sizes of guayule and mariola were similar at identical ploidy levels, and the genome size of diploid guayule (1624 Mb) was almost twofold smaller than the genomes of sunflower (H. annuus L. 2n = 2x = 34) and lettuce (L. sativa L.; 2n = 2x = 18), two other Compositae (Asteraceae) species that are being genome-sequenced. The results from this study will serve as a foundation for interspecific breeding and genome sequencing of guayule and mariola
Mykoła Maszczenko — nieznany klasyk ukraińskiego kina
MYKOLA MASHCHENKO — THE UNKNOWN CLASSIC OF UKRAINIAN CINEMAMykola Mashchenko, one of the eminent Ukrainian directors, the former president of Dovzhenko Film Studios in Kyiv, is hardly known in Poland. The article reminds his role as a personage for years creating Ukrainian culture and supporting young filmmakers. The author focuses on Mashchenko’s leading role as a national artist of Ukraine with regard to his participation in different activities, aiming to constitute Ukrainian national culture, including Ukrainian national cinema. Therefore, especially important were Mashchenko’s links with the szetidiesiatniki movement and Ukrainian poetic cinema of the 60s., because in Soviet Ukraine it was one of the most efficient artistic manifestations of national identity. Describing the main screen works by Mykola Mashchenko, the author underlines the characteristics of his style, e.g. his attachment to ideas, expressive protagonists and unusual choices to challenge.Translated by Mariola MarczakMYKOLA MASHCHENKO — THE UNKNOWN CLASSIC OF UKRAINIAN CINEMAMykola Mashchenko, one of the eminent Ukrainian directors, the former president of Dovzhenko Film Studios in Kyiv, is hardly known in Poland. Noise induced hearing loss: Research in central, eastern and south-eastern Europe and newly independent states
The aim of this review was to summarize the studies on noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) which were carried out in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, South-East Europe, and former Soviet Union countries or Newly Independent States in the period from 1970 to 2012. The papers were identified by literature search of all accessible medical and other databases (Scopus, PubMed, Medline, etc.) using the terms "noise; hearing loss, NIHL" as key words and country denomination (in alphabetical order: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Czech Republic, Georgia, Hungary, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russian Federation, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, former Yugoslavia, Ukraine). This review comprises both papers published in peer-reviewed international journals and articles from local sources. The main papers′ topics included the assessment of the noise hazards in occupational, and very seldom in communal environment, and the prevalence of hearing impairment in employees. Simultaneously, attempts were undertaken to establish the relationship between the degree of hearing impairment and noise exposure. The effect of combined exposures to noise and vibration and/or otoxic chemicals was assessed as well. The influence of environmental, individual, and genetic risk factors on NIHL development was intensively examined. In addition, studies concerning the role of otoacoustic emissions for NIHL monitoring and clinical examinations were conducted. Some animal researches, including molecular genetics, had been also performed. The majority of papers concerned occupational exposures, whereas only a few were dedicated to community noise
Evaluation of annoyance from low frequency noise under laboratory conditions
The aim of the study was to investigate the annoyance of low frequency noise (LFN) at levels normally prevailing at workplaces in control rooms and office-like areas. Two different laboratory experiments were carried out. The first experiment included 55 young volunteers and the second one comprised 70 older volunteers, categorized in terms of sensitivity to noise. The subjects listened to noise samples with different spectra, including LFNs at sound pressure level (SPL) of 45-67 dBA, and evaluated annoyance using a 100-score graphical rating scale. The subjective ratings of annoyance were compared to different noise metrics. In both the experiments, there were no differences in annoyance assessments between females and males. A significant influence of individual sensitivity to noise on annoyance rating was observed for some LFNs. Annoyance of LFN was not rated higher than annoyance from broadband noises without or with less prominent low frequencies at similar A-weighted SPLs. In both the experiments, median annoyance rating of LFN highly correlated with A-weighted SPL (L Aeq,T ), low frequency A-weighted SPL (L LFAeq,T ) and C-weighted SPL (L Ceq,T ). However, it is only the two latter noise metrics (i.e. L LFAeq,T and L Ceq,T ) which seem to be reliable predictors of annoyance exclusively from LFN. The young and older participants assessed similar annoyance from LFN at similar L LFAeq,T or L Ceq,T levels. Generally, over half of the subjects were predicted to be highly annoyed by LFN at the low frequency A-weighted SPL or C-weighted SPL above 62 and 83 dB, respectively
Vulvodynia – still a challenging therapeutic problem
Introduction . Vulvodynia is a chronic condition characterized by pain and burning in the vulvar area without any abnormalities in clinical and laboratory examinations. The diagnosis is based on detailed assessment of medical history, physical examination and exclusion of other potential causes of vulvar pain. As yet, no definitive treatment algorithm has been universally accepted for vulvodynia.
Objective . To present a case of successful treatment of generalized spontaneous vulvodynia with low doses of amitriptyline.
Case report . A 42-year-old patient presented to a dermatology outpatient clinic with chronic generalized vulvar pain of 2 years’ duration. She was diagnosed with generalized spontaneous vulvodynia. Amitriptyline treatment was introduced and supported by topical application of lignocaine gel. After 13 months of amitriptyline therapy a complete remission was achieved.
Conclusions . Vulvodynia is a complex disease with numerous presentations, the symptoms of which often overlap. Since the diagnosis of vulvodynia requires the exclusion of other abnormalities, it is fundamental to raise the awareness of the disease among clinicians, so as to enable early correct diagnosis and adequate treatment

Abstract
For aim of this paper and analysis of the treatment methods in question articles from Pumbed basis were used. Pumbed basis, which works under the auspices of US National Library of Medicine and National Institute of Health, helped to analyze the treatment methods for chronic condition of heel spur and plantar fascia. The analytical process was based on bibliographical descript. Results of 1204 numbers were summarized because of specialist criterion.
Heel spurs are bony growths growing out of the plantar fascia and other soft tissues lining nearby which conduct to the plantar fascia ignition. The occurrence of these is connected with burdensome feeling of pain that can be felt when making first steps after getting up in the morning. It is a serious condition that applies to more and more people. Being overweight, training sports straining feet are the reasons contributing to this condition. Yet, it is not a general rule for the risk group. Treating methods in this sphere give many opportunities for physical therapist and doctors. The best sustainable method is physical therapy supported by medical aids. However, not every case gives intended results. If the sustainable methods are not enough, the surgical treatment should be introduced. There is no doubt that any method of treatment is individually reclaimed by every patient.

Reading culture of the 5th grade students from Łódź primary schools
W artykule zaprezentowano i omówiono wyniki badań autorki przeprowadzonych w roku szk. Te same pytania, w nieco zmienionej formie, zostały zadane dzieciom i ich rodzicom.
Celem przedsięwzięcia było poznanie i opisanie kultury czytelniczej wybranej grupy wiekowej nastolatków, porównanie deklaracji uczniów z wiedzą rodziców na temat kultury czytelniczej potomstwa oraz ocena skali zarejestrowanych różnic. Wyniki zostały porównane z analogicznymi, przeprowadzonymi w roku szk. 2011/12 na mniejszej próbie badawczej. The survey aimed at description and verification of the reading culture of the group of teenagers (11 and 12 years old Łódź inhabitants), including evaluation of its scale, and comparison of opinions expressed by the youth and their parents. Both the students and their parents (although in slightly different form) were asked to present their opinions about: attitudes towards reading, reading preferences, their private
book collections, as well as the role of parents and other people in shaping their reading habits.Udostępnienie publikacji Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego finansowane w ramach projektu „Doskonałość naukowa kluczem do doskonałości kształcenia”. Phytoestrogens use by Polish women
Objective: to evaluate knowledge about phytoestrogens among Polish menopausal women, and to assess their applicability and safety. Methods: The study included 300 women from the Wielkopolska Region, aged 40-60 years. The questionnaire was designed especially for the study. Crosstabulation tables and Perason’s chi-squared test was used for the statistical analysis. Results: 147 respondents continued to menstruate. Hormone Replacement Therapy was used by 69 subjects; 114 respondents, used phytoestrogens. The place of inhabitance influenced the reasons for not using phytoestrogens. Media, healthcare providers and personnel were the main source of information about phytoestrogens. Most of respondents perceived phytoestrogens as substances displaying a beneficial effect on health. 69% of the subjects reported positive effects of non-hormonal preparations for the relief of climacteric symptoms, mainly reduction in hot flushes and alleviation of joint pain. Conclusions: Our results support the postulate of efficacy and safety of phytoestrogen use to relieve climacteric symptoms. Both education and place of inhabitance appear to affect the opinions of the affected females about phytoestrogen use during menopause
