Yu. M. Lotman and Contemporary Narratology

    No full text
The paper reconstructs the influence of the semiotic studies of Yu. Lotman on the formation of the problems and the research apparatus of modern (“post-classical”) multimedia narratology, associated with the names of J. Genette, P. Ricoeur, W. Schmid and others. In particular, the author discusses the emergence of scientific interest in the film narrative, which has also had a significant impact on literary narratology, enriching it with the constructive concept of the “narrative image”. The article focuses on Lotman’s storytelling research, especially the concept of “plot-driven texts” of culture in their opposition to “plotless texts”. Particular importance is attached to the distinction between plot and myth, which continued O. M. Freidenberg’s investigations into the origin of narration. Lotman’s pioneering role in mastering the scientific categories of “narrative worldview” and “narrative event” is described. The author reveals the place of Lotman's research heritage in the comprehension of narrative practices as a tool for mental appropriation of life, accumulation and retranslation of event experience, as well as in the birth and development of the modern project of historical narratology

    Saratov’s plot in Yu. N. Chumakov’s letters

The article discusses the place of Saratov-based plot in Yu. N. Chumakov’s letters addressed to the author of the article. The subject of discussion in the correspondence is the defense of Yu. N. Chumakov’s dissertation at Saratov University in 1970 and its role in his scientifi c biography. The defense of the dissertation with Yu. M. Lotman as the fi rst opponent became the key event of the Saratov plot and its climax. Having singled out fragments from the correspondence related to the plot of Saratov, the author seeks to explain the direction of the ensuing epistolary dialogue, why the defense of the dissertation was perceived by Yu. N. Chumakov as a more than signifi cant event for him, especially in the context of his dramatic biography. The author proves that the defense was an explosion of the linear sequence of the text of life, which dramatically changed the fate of the scientist. The desire to talk in detail about the defense, to fi nd out what impression it made, and to look at what was happening on that memorable day for him through the eyes of the addressee of the letter, betrayed the desire to read and interpret his fate again and again. Particular attention is paid in the correspondence to the personalities of such outstanding philologists, professors of Saratov University as A. P. Skaftymov and E. I. Pokusaev. Yu. N. Chumakov was not A. P. Skaftymov’s student and was not familiar with him, but specifi cally noted the acquisition and subsequent development of the principles of a scientifi c approach to the work, set out in his theoretical article in 1923. About the personality of E. I. Pokusaev, his supervisor, and the history of the relationship with him, Yu. N. Chumakov wrote in great detail. Having told about the role of E. I. Pokusaev, who supported the dissertation at the defense, and having outlined his complex, large and humanly attractive personality, Yu.N. Chumakov completes the plot of Saratov, which was very meaningful for him, primarily for self-understanding of his scientifi c path

Bilokur through the prism of the synthesis of the arts. P. Tychyna is recognized as an artist who masterfully combined word, music, and painting in his poetry. One of the ways of the elucidation is the research of the artists’ direct and indirect influence on P. Tychyna’s poetic style. I n this paper the attention is concentrated on Yu. Mykhayliv’s and K. Bilokur’s impact. Yu. Mykhayliv is a prominent representative of musical painting. I n particular, music is provoked through the titles of his works («Music of Stars», «Music of Waterfalls», «Sonata of the Moon», etc.), through his painting technics (dynamics and rhythm of images, lines and colours), and through the using specific music methods and laws in the pictorial art. And arts contacts with Yu. Mykhailiv denotes P. Tychyna’s style. For example, Yu. Mykhayliv’s «Music of Stars» intercrosses with P. Tychyna’s space motives. And this aspect is analyzed in detail in the paper. K. Bilokur is an outstanding painter excelling in drawing flowers («Flowers in the Fog», «Wild Flowers», «Flowers in the Evening», «Decorative Flowers», etc.). Her pictures produce music effects on the associative level. And the close relationships in art between a painter and a poet observe through their works on the associative level. For example, K. Bilokur’s «Exuberant» suggests an obvious analogy with P. Tychyna’s cyclus «In the Space Orchestra». The author of the paper examines the arts contacts between K. Bilokur and P. Tychyna

For any m∈ℤ let P(m) denote the greatest prime divisor of m with the convention that P(m)=1 when m∈{1,0,-1}. By the problem of Erdo{double acute}s in the title of the present paper we mean the general version of his problem, that is, his conjecture from 1965 that (Formula Presented) (see Erdo{double acute}s [10]) and its far-reaching generalization to Lucas and Lehmer numbers. In the present paper the author delivers three refinements upon Yu [40] required by C. L. Stewart for solving completely the problem of Erdo{double acute}s (see Stewart [25]). The author gives also some remarks on the solution of this problem, aiming to be more streamlined with respect to the p-adic theory of logarithmic forms.</p

Nitrogen-vacancy center has proven a promising candidate in quantum information and quantum sensing due to its excellent optical and spin properties for long coherent time and robust spin state readout, as well as its sensitivity towards multiple tunable parameters such as magnetic field, electric field, mechanical strain and pressure. In this thesis, we study the change of diamagnetic properties of single crystal BaFe₂(As₀.₅₉P₀.₄₁)₂ under high pressure at cryogenic condition by using micron-sized diamond particles as spatially resolved magnetic probes. In addition, we review advanced spin coherent control and readout techniques using cavity quantum electrodynamics in literatures. At last, we demonstrate the interplay between quantum optimal control and machine learning. We extract vectorial information of the local magnetic field at different position on the sample from ODMR spectrum. Through tuning pressure parameter and performing thermal cycle, we determine the lower critical field c₁ and lower critical temperature c₁, together with c₂ dependence of the sample as a function of pressure. This novel sensing technique utilizing NV centers overcomes technical difficulties of employing conventional fragile magnetic probes under extreme pressure, while being a local vector field sensor and readily accessible to most confocal or wide-field microscopy setups. On the other hand, we use deep reinforcement learning and active learning to study the feasibility and outlook for quantum optimal control and suggest hybrid approach to improve current standalone algorithms and methods. M.Phil. Spectral analysis of high resolution near-infrared spectra of ultra cool dwarfs

    Get PDF
Aims.We present an analysis of high resolution spectra in the J band of five ultra cool dwarfs from M6 to L0. Methods. We make use of a new ab initio water vapour line list and existing line lists of FeH and CrH for modelling the observations. Results. We find a good fit for the Mn I 12 899.76 Å line. This feature is one of the few for which we have a reliable oscillator strength. Other atomic features are present but most of the observed features are FeH and H2O lines. While we are uncertain about the quality of many of the atomic line parameters, the FeH and CrH line lists predict a number of features which are not apparent in our observed spectra. We infer that the main limiting factor in our spectral analysis is the FeH and CrH molecular spectra

Exploration of the CU-MN-AS ternary phase diagram and MN3B4 antiferromagnets

    Get PDF
CuMnAs was first studied more than fifty years ago, both in a tetragonal phase (t-CuMnAs) and orthorhombic phase (o-CuMnAs). Today, the prospect of spintronics has created a new focus on antiferromagnetic materials with Néel temperatures above room temperature, with the goal of reading and writing spin orientations by electrical current. Tetragonal CuMnAs is a candidate whose experimental reading and writing with electrical field has been realized as a proof of concept. Our fundamental knowledge of other phases in the Cu-Mn-As ternary system remains to be improved. In this study, we study a broader part of the phase diagram of this system. We examine the structure of different phases, their thermal and magnetic properties, and the relationship between stoichiometry and structure. We also present our synthetic and magnetic characterization of antiferromagnetic Mn3B4. Single crystals larger than 200 microns were obtained and examined by single-crystal diffraction and magnetometry.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2020-08-01The student, Jingwen Yu, accepted the attached license on 2018-05-02 at 10:19.The student, Jingwen Yu, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2018-05-02 at 10:27.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2018-05-03 at 15:39.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #12499 on 2018-09-27 at 11:32:47Made available in DSpace on 2018-09-27T16:45:27Z (GMT).
