Policy analysis for watershed management: A trainer's manual
This training manual aims to enhance the capabilities of the staff of the Local Government Units and other potential parties in conducting policy analysis for watershed management. The manual includes the following major topics
Demographic development of Lantapan
This chapter reports on the demographic situation in Lantapan since it became a municipality. It examines population attributes such as age distribution and composition, growth rate, its causes and likely implications for the size of future population and pressure on natural resources. It provides a brief ethno-historical account of migration to the area by Dumagats1 , and of interactions between migrants and the indigenous Talaandig people in relation to the acquisition of land
Assessment of Organizations as Catalysts for Community Development: An Application of the Multinomial Logit Model
Agrarian Reform Communities or ARCs are clusters of land reformed barangays primarily composed and managed by Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries who are willing to be organized and undertake the integrated development of an area and/or their organizations/cooperatives. Organizations serve as channel for support services such as credit, marketing support, and training programs. To measure the level of development of ARCs, the Department of Agrarian Reform developed a quantitative assessment tool known as the ARC Level of Development Assessment (ALDA). This paper used the data drawn from a survey of cooperatives in the ARCs in selected provinces of MIMAROPA, Bicol Region, Western Visayas, Eastern Visayas, and Western Mindanao. The key variables analyzed in the model are the ALDA rating, knowledge and practice scores, which served as the proxy variable for the functionality of the organizations, the proportion of inactive members in the organization, and the total number of members. The estimates of the multinomial logit model showed that the level of functionality of the organizations significantly influences the level of community development. Specifically, the better is the functionality of the organization, the higher is the likelihood that the ARC will have a higher ALDA rating
Enhancing credit delivery facilities to support farmer’s use of technology
An important factor in increasing agricultural productivity and production in developing countries is through the use of modern technology. However, the use of modern technology like biotechnology products is capital intensive. This chapter presents how the informal credit providers enable the small corn farmers to use genetically modified (GM) corn varieties, the credit delivery mechanisms of both formal and informal credit providers, and how effective are the credit policy reforms in improving corn farmers’ access to credit. The study shows that majority of the corn farmers interviewed rely heavily on informal credit sources for corn production and consumption. These credit providers require no collateral but take into consideration the borrower’s credit record and capacity to pay, require farmers to use GM corn seeds, and charge higher interest rate. This chapter concludes with policy recommendations to regulate the terms and conditions of informal credit system and extend microfinance service to farmers to enable them to maximize benefits of modern technology adoption
The peopling of Lantapan
Metadata only recordThe study examines the demographic situation in Lantapan, Bukidnon since it became a municipality. It examines population attributes, namely, age distribution, composition, growth rate, sources of growth and what their likely implications are on the size of future population and the pressure on agricultural production. It also provides account on how the Talaandigs and the Dumagats came to settle in Lantapan and an in-depth analysis of the dynamic interaction between these two tribal groups in relation to land use. Population growth in Lantapan was due to natural increase and migration. There are indications that population growth rate is declining in the recent years. This can be attributed to declining fertility that in turn can be due to increased age at first marriage, improved education, and use of artificial contraception. The data also suggest that Lantapan is becoming an out migration area
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
