An event portfolio in rural development: an ethnographic investigation of a community's use of sport and cultural events
Sport events have been studied predominantly in isolation from other genres, as single events that have economic or social impacts mainly for urban communities. Yet, the apparent economic and social value of recurring small-scale sport and cultural events in rural communities call for strategic and integrated planning in policies for rural development. This requires that instead of assessing the economic or social benefits of a certain event, a series of interrelated events that comprise a host community's event portfolio can be synergized to derive outcomes through a holistic planning approach that places in concert the economic and social planning of different events. From this perspective, this study examines the event portfolio of a rural community. Ethnographic methods were employed and fieldwork was conducted in Fort Stockton, a small community in South-West Texas. Data collection included participant observation, interviews, review of archival materials and social network analysis. The results show that Fort Stockton's event portfolio is an embedded and eclectic assemblage of sport and cultural performances, collective imaginary and thematic preoccupations of the community that are presented as suitable for spectation. The instrumental connectivity of events bolsters the capacity of the portfolio to serve multiple purposes although strategic cross-leverage is not employed. Thematic continuities among events in the portfolio reaffirm and establish the projected meta-messages within and outside the community. A conceptual synergy lies at the core of each event, which dramatizes the ideological conflict between individualism and collectivism, and translates it to community identity, civic esteem, and economic benefit addressing the public discourse in Fort Stockton and mobilizing resources for event implementations. The institutional framework of Fort Stockton constitutes the basis of its capacity to capitalize on its event portfolio. Event organizers operate within an informal event network that frames their cooperative efforts to host events. Therefore, the event portfolio stands as an embedded system in which an integrated approach is taken about economic and social development by creating synergies between sport and cultural events and in turn using them for consolidating the community and fostering tourism. Finally, the theoretical and practical implications that derive from the study are discussed
AAC Stockton barley
AAC Stockton is a hulled two-row spring general purpose barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivar widely adapted to western Canada. It was developed from the cross TR11219/CDC Kindersley made in 2012 and it was evaluated in the Western Cooperative Two-row Barley Registration Test (2020-2021) before being registered in 2023. AAC Stockton will offer a good production choice for barley growers across the Prairies due to its grain yield potential, lodging resistance and improved FHB resistance. The presentation of the authors' names and (or) special characters in the title of the pdf file of the accepted manuscript may differ slightly from what is displayed on the item page. Defense policymaking: the post-cold war roles and missions debate.
This thesis examines the ability of the President, Congress and Armed
Services to formulate and implement defense policy that eliminates duplication
and inefficiencies within service roles and missions. The hypothesis examined is
that the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the four military Services will be unable to
formulate any significant changes in their own roles and missions because of a
dichotomy between what the Services see as significant change (read structure)
and what Congress sees as significant change (read budget). The Services inability
to make change will force Congress to take the lead in the defense reform effort.
However, congressional efforts to formulate and implement defense policy will
prove imperfect again, unless Congress can first reform itself. Secretary of
Defense Les Aspin has the best opportunity to formulate and implement defense policy for a post-Cold War environment. This thesis begins with a brief overview
on the origins of the present day roles and missions debate, and is followed by
an examination of the Goldwater-Nichols Act that provides insight as to how
legislators might work with or against the President and Services in reallocating
service roles and missions. The current debate over service roles and missions is
examined along with constraints and implications of defense policymaking.Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.Lieutenant, United States Navyhttp://archive.org/details/defensepolicymak109452414
Dialogues on the Delta: Approaches to the City of Stockton
This collection of essays examines the city of Stockton, California from an interdisciplinary perspective. Stockton is in the heart of the Central Valley, an agricultural region that comprises a diverse population and rich history. This book covers the economic downturn of the city that was ground zero for the housing market crisis during the Great Recession, which resulted in it becoming the first major American city to declare bankruptcy. Nevertheless, the city cannot be framed only on its economic misfortunes; Stockton has a vibrant community with important historical figures such as Martín Ramírez, an outsider painter who was a patient in the Stockton State Hospital. This book also covers topics such as food studies, religious communities, historical resources at the library at the University of the Pacific, business community programs such as “Puentes”, an overview of the city’s racial diversity, auto-ethnographies, the family connection to Mexican author Elena Poniatowska, and a program at the Stockton High School during WWII to send jeeps as part of the war effort. This book is informed by the perspectives of historians, sociologists, political scientists, economists, business scholars, and literary and cultural studies theorists to provide a wide range of approaches to a vital community in the Central Valley of California.https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/cop-facbooks/1175/thumbnail.jp

A study of the development of the Recreation Department of Stockton, California
Stockton is a city suffering from the sudden realization that it is no longer a small farm town, end that in the process of becoming a moderate-sized city, a community faces inevitable growing pains.
The municipal recreation phase of city government well illustrates this fact. Because of the great need for expansion in this field, and because the city is now just beginning to rise to meet the occasion, a study of the Recreational Department and the program of the Metropolitan Recreation Commission in Stockton City Government and San Joaquin County, is a particularly interesting activity.
In contrast to many theses which are based upon research in books and periodicals, this thesis has been the outgrowth of investigation based largely upon interviews with persons concerned with this phase of city government and upon personal observation, as well as reports and newspaper accounts of activities.
As a resident of Stockton during much of the time covered in this report, as an attendant at periodic meetings of both the Junior Youth Council and the Stockton Youth Council, as a participant in some of the Recreation Department\u27s activities, and as a former employee of a Stockton group work agency, the author has had to guard against subjective reporting in writing this paper. She has. attempted to record evaluations which she considered valid and to include facts and sources on which her opinions were based
Basques in Stockton : a study of assimilation
In Stockton today there is a small number of persons who come under the category, Basque. As the origin of the Basques and their language is as yet undetermined, it lends a somewhat mysterious air to them.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether the Basques, more particularly the younger generation, are becoming assimilated into the community. Are they the Basque in their manner of living, or are they American?
WIthin the scope of this study fall some 219 individuals organized into eighty-seven family groups. They are the first and second generation families and their unmarried children living at home. Most of the material for this paper was gathered from them by personal interview. Very little was obtained from other sources, primarily because the author has no facility with French, Spanish, or Basque, in which languages most of the material is to be found.
The study will cover two major phases. The first deals with an explanation of assimilation, historical background and other facts about the Basque people. The second section covers actual facts found in the survey made of the Basques in Stockton. The conclusion presents a brief summary of these findings. It will attempt to answer whether or not assimilation has taken place, and if it has, why
