A comparative study of form and theology in the works of Flannery O'Connor and Simone Weil

    No full text
In this comparative study of the form and theology of Flannery O'Connor and Simone Weil I interrogate how Weil's philosophical writings and her theology illuminate O'Connor's use of both narrative and non-fictional forms, and her Catholicism. The Introduction analyses how Weil's concept of superposed reading provides a new method of approaching both O'Connor, her writings, and O'Connor studies, and focuses on how such apparently different women interconnect. Chapter One explores how both Weil and O'Connor attempt to write their theologies on the souls of their readers yet are each subject to constraints imposed by form. Weil's concept of locating equilibrium between incommensurates is discussed, and her distinctively philosophical approach to fictions and fictionality is used to investigate O'Connor's notion of prophetic fictions and the writer's role. Chapter Two assesses how both writers revivify Christian paradoxes. Weil's monstrous concept of affiiction, and O'Connor's use of the grotesque genre to jolt secular man into an awareness of the sacred are scrutinised. Chapter Three studies how both writers consider an encounter between God and man is possible through the action of grace. My Conclusion interrogates how Weil's work can deepen our understanding of O'Connor's writings, and examines how successful O'Connor is at realising a truly Christian literature. I conclude that despite being a writer of powerful fictions, O'Connor can not be totally successful in her mission as writer-prophet because ultimately fiction escapes orthodoxy

Prolongation of tangent valued forms to Weil bundles

    No full text
summary:We prove that the so-called complete lifting of tangent valued forms from a manifold MM to an arbitrary Weil bundle over MM preserves the Frölicher-Nijenhuis bracket. We also deduce that the complete lifts of connections are torsion-free in the sense of M. Modugno and the second author

Preparation and temperature cycling reliability of electroless Ni(P) under bump metallization

    No full text
The reliability of electroless Ni(P) under-bump metallization (UBM) was evaluated via temperature cycling and solder bump shear strength tests. Commercial diodes and dummy dies fabricated in-house were used as substrates for the electroless Ni(P) UBM deposition. Solder bumps were formed after reflowing eutectic 63Sn37Pb solder foils over the Ni(P) UBM. The solder bump shear strength was measured before and after different temperature cycling. The results from this study showed that the UBM thickness and dimension had important effects on the solder bump shear strength and reliability. Both the larger UBM dimension and larger UBM thickness tended to induce higher stress in the UBM, which resulted in the lower solder bump shear strength and lower temperature cycling reliability. A better UBM structure solution for high current electronic packaging application is indicated in this pape

On the Chern-Weil homomorphism in Finsler spaces

    No full text
In this paper a framework is set up which enables the author to formulate the Chern-Weil homomorphism on a Finsler space over a manifold M. For this end the following theorem is proved: Let (∇,h) be the h-Finsler connection, f p an invariant polynomial in HM. If for the curvature R 2 of the Cartan connection ∇R 2 =0 holds, then d h f * p (R 2 ,⋯,R 2 )=0, i.e. f * p is a d h -closed 2p-form. For Landsberg spaces holds ∇R 2 =0. In the case of non-vanishing d h a natural way to define cohomology groups is discussed

Algebraic and Topological Theory of Languages

    No full text
: A language is torsion (resp. bounded torsion, aperiodic, bounded aperiodic) if its syntactic monoid is torsion (resp. bounded torsion, aperiodic, bounded aperiodic). We generalize the regular language theorems of Kleene, Schutzenberger and Straubing to describe the classes of torsion, bounded torsion, aperiodic and bounded aperiodic languages. These descriptions involve taking limits of sequences of languages and automata for certain topologies defined by filtrations of the free monoid. A theorem for arbitrary languages over finite alphabets is also stated and proved.
