    On using Directional Information for Parameter Space Decomposition in Ellipse Detection

    In this paper we use the parametric polar representation to extend the application of edge directional information from circle to ellipse extraction. As a result we obtain a mapping which decomposes the parameter space required for ellipse extraction into two independent sub-spaces and one final histogram accumulator. The mapping includes the tangent of the angle of the first and second directional derivatives. These tangents are computed by considering edge direction at two border points. We show that the use of gradient information for parameter space decomposition avoids the intensive point labelling imposed by geometric constraints used by other approaches

    On Using Gait in Forensic Biometrics

    Given the continuing advances in gait biometrics, it appears prudent to investigate the translation of these techniques for forensic use. We address the question as to the confidence that might be given between any two such measurements. We use the locations of ankle, knee and hip to derive a measure of the match between walking subjects in image sequences. The Instantaneous Posture Match algorithm, using Harr templates, kinematics and anthropomorphic knowledge is used to determine their location. This is demonstrated using real CCTV recorded at Gatwick Airport, laboratory images from the multi-view CASIA-B dataset and an example of real scene of crime video. To access the measurement confidence we study the mean intra- and inter-match scores as a function of database size. These measures converge to constant and separate values, indicating that the match measure derived from individual comparisons is considerably smaller than the average match measure from a population

    This thesis explores Hunter S. Thompson\u27s writings about Richard M. Nixon from 1960 to 1994. Thompson expressed strong animosity toward Nixon, but most of the more outlandish articles he wrote about Nixon were fabrications. Thompson\u27s writings were often ambiguous and contradictory. Sources used for research included books written by Thompson, books of letters Thompson sent to family and friends, books about Thompson and Richard Nixon, and books about the Watergate scandal. This thesis addresses the questions of why Thompson was so fascinated by Nixon, and why he wrote on Nixon for almost 40 years. It also addresses the question of whether Thompson actually despised Nixon as he claimed to, or whether he felt a kindred spirit with Nixon. The purpose of this thesis is to identify themes and rhetoric in Thompson\u27s writings before, during and after the Watergate scandal, to compare what Thompson wrote about Nixon to what other writers were writing, and to determine if Thompson\u27s style and viewpoint changed during the period of study. The important factor that distinguished Thompson from other writers during the Watergate scandal was that Thompson wrote in the gonzo style—a reportorial term he adopted and glorified that emphasized subjectivity, satire, humor, entertainment and fabrication. Another important difference is that gonzo is about process— the story is usually as much about the author getting the story, as it is the story itself. It is also important to note that while Thompson did advocate Nixon resigning the presidency, many reporters at the time had the same desire to see Nixon resign. Thompson distinguished himself from the more mainstream press by voicing his attitudes and opinions in the gonzo reporting style, which openly satirized the presidency and other reporters. During the research-gathering portion of the thesis, it was ascertained that Thompson wrote approximately 40 articles that focused mainly on Nixon, and 150 more articles that mentioned Nixon. Many of Thompson\u27s articles that were used for the thesis were written for Rolling Stone, the main magazine he wrote for during the Watergate scandal, and were compiled in books that were used for the thesis research

    Invariant Characterisation of the Hough Transform for Pose Estimation of Arbitrary Shapes

    In this paper we develop a new formulation and methodology for including invariance in a general form of the Hough transform. Essentially, the transformations that control a shape's appearance are extracted using invariance, for arbitrary shapes with a continuous description. We first develop a formal definition of the Hough transform mapping for arbitrary shapes and general transformations. We then include an invariant characterisation of shapes and develop and apply our new technique to extract shapes under similarity and affine transformations. Our formulation and implementation is based directly on parametric curves and so avoids the use of indexed look-up tables. This confers the attributes of a continuous shape description avoiding discretisation problems inherent in earlier formulations. To obtain an invariant characterisation, each point in the model is related to a collection of other points defining a geometric arrangement. This characterisation does not require the computation of properties for lines or other primitives that compose the model, but is based solely on the local geometry of the points on shapes. The transformation is obtained by solving for the parameters of the curve according to an arrangement of points defined for a point in the image and a corresponding arrangement of points for a point in the model with the same invariant properties. The location parameters can be gathered in a 2D accumulator space independent of the transformation and of a shape's complexity. Experimental results show that the new technique is capable of extracting arbitrary shapes under occlusion and when the image contains noise. As such this new formulation retains the known performance advantages of the Hough transform, whilst combining a continuous shape description with invariant mappings

    Soft biometrics for surveillance: an overview

    Biometrics is the science of automatically recognizing people based on physical or behavioral characteristics such as face, fingerprint, iris, hand, voice, gait and signature. More recently, the use of soft biometric traits has been proposed to improve the performance of traditional biometric systems and allow identification based on human descriptions. Soft biometric traits include characteristics such as height, weight, body geometry, scars, marks and tattoos (SMT), gender, etc. These traits offer several advantages over traditional biometric techniques. Soft biometric traits can be typically described using human understandable labels and measurements, allowing for retrieval and recognition solely based on verbal descriptions. Unlike many primary biometric traits, soft biometrics can be obtained at a distance without subject cooperation and from low quality video footage, making them ideal for use in surveillance applications.
