In honour of Professor Patrick Couvreur, recipient of the Journal Of Drug Targeting’s Lifetime Achievement Award For 2019

It is the time of year to honour the recipient of the ‘Journal of Drug Targeting’s’ Life-time Achievement Award for 2019. The Lifetime Achievement Award is an unsolicited award given annually to honour the sustained outstanding scientific achievements of a researcher working in the broad fields of drug delivery and targeting. This year’s winner, as always, was selected by a scientific panel comprising members of the Editorial board and representatives from Taylor and Francis/Informa PLC, the publishers of the ‘Journal of Drug Targeting’. It gives me great pleasure to announce that Professor Patrick Couvreur, from the University of Paris-Sud in France, is the recipient of this year’s ‘Journal of Drug Targeting’s’ Lifetime Achievement Award for his life-long, high impact research into the development of drug delivery systems for use in nanomedicines.Scopu

    EGFR-Directed Monoclonal Antibodies

    No full text
“Targeted therapy” designates a new generation of antitumor agents designed to interfere with a specific molecular target believed to have a critical role in tumor growth or progression. Most of these targets are represented by kinases controlling cell homeostasis, such as tyrosine kinase receptors (TKRs). The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is one of the most investigated TKRs frequently expressed in a variety of epithelial tumors and correlates with poor prognosis. Several efforts have been made in the last 20 years to design therapeutic agents that inhibit EGFR, such as monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) or tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). Cetuximab is the first anti-EGFR monoclonal antibody approved by the FDA for the treatment of patients with EGFR-expressing, metastatic colorectal carcinoma, and head and neck cancer. Other MAbs directed against EGFR, including panitumumab, are in clinical development for the treatment of various human cancer types

Structural characterization of ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide (USPIO) particles in aqueous suspension by energy dispersive X-ray diffraction (EDXD)

Ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide (USPIO) particles were structurally characterized in situ in an aqueous dilute suspension by energy dispersive X-ray diffraction (EDXD) and ex situ as powders obtained by lyophilization of the suspension by angular dispersive X-ray diffraction (ADXD) at 20 degrees C. Structural parameters obtained by the Rietveld method on ADXD data were used as starting parameters for modeling the structure of the particles in suspension. Although each particle is a single crystal, as evidenced by conventional X-ray diffraction, our results indicate that the structural order, specific to a crystal, does not extend to the entire volume of the particle. In fact, each individual particle, averagely, has a crystalline structural extension ca. 4.0 nm smaller than the apparent dimensions obtained by both ADXD and TEM (ca. 8.0 nm)

Atomic pair distribution function (PDF) study of iron oxide nanoparticles in aqueous suspension

Size is the key regulating the crystalline structure of iron oxide nanoparticles. The effect of the crystal size on the microstructure of these nanoparticles was investigated in an aqueous dilute suspension by energy dispersive X-ray diffraction (EDXD) and in an aqueous concentrated suspension by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), at 293 K. Nanoparticle structure was also investigated by HRTEM. Structural results were interpreted in terms of theoretical models built using structural parameters obtained by the Rietveld method on XRD. The ability of the pair distribution function (PDF) to measure medium-range correlation lengths and size in nanoscale crystalline materials was also investigated and discussed. The sensitivity of the PDF technique allowed modelling of sample polydispersity

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
