Political economy on modernisation of old industrial areas and the crisis of the new economy: the example of the Ruhr area and the citiy of Dortmund

    No full text
In 90s of the last century two trends took place in a parallel manner: (1) the neoliberal transformation of the western industrial countries continued, but indeed with a very significant difference between the USA (and UK) and Western Europe. (2) High growth rates in the US, partly induced by the 90s accumulation wave in the "new economy", resulted - driven by the asset inflation since 1996 - in a fundamental over-accumulation of capital in the IT-sector. The crisis of the new economy and the implosion of the asset markets now seem to bear a deeper than a ´normal´ cyclical crisis. Old industrial regions in crisis (high unemployment and poorness rates, low public budgets and investments and therefore neglected infrastructure systems) like the Ruhr area or some parts of them like the city of Dortmund try to reduce their employment problems by launching new regional clusters like the IT-sector and e-commerce, micro-systems technologies and logistics in the late 90s and the new decade. Mc Kinsey consulted the city of Dortmund and Thyssen-Krupp - the second largest steel company of western Europe and the owner of the former steel plants in Dortmund - to create 60.000 new jobs until the year 2010 in those new basic industries, founded on a very successful development of the software complex in the 80s and 90s that created about 15.000 jobs since 1985. The ´empirical base´ of these prospects have been prolonged exponential functions of the new economy branches in the late 90s. The combination of the general economic crisis, the special crisis of the new economy and the results of the contra-productive macroeconomic austerity policy including the federal tax reforms lead to a very deep crisis of the public funds in the Ruhr-area, the city of Dortmund, the Land North-Rhine Westfalia an the FRG. Although we can assume that the branches of the new economy will expand again after the crisis - but with much lower growth rates as before - the public actors will have to reduce their activities significantly, if the austerity policies are continued. So it is very probably that the job targets until 2010 will not be realised. Instead of a fundamental change of macroeconomic policy more symbolic policies are activated intensively: - top events (world football championship, appointment for the 2012 Olympic Games, Triennale) are applied; - new expensive flagship - projects which reduce the money for the non-spectaculative expenditures (for schools, qualification activities etc.) - are launched: the Metrorapid as a new regional high speed train between Düsseldorf and Dortmund; entertainment and cultural industries investments like indoor skiing malls, philhamonic halls; - policies "without money" take place: voluntarian appelles, privatisation of public infrastructure, more competition in the public sphere; more pressure on unemployed people. - debates, but no decisions, are going on on functional reforms and new institutions like the Metropolitan Region Rhine-Ruhr, Ruhstadt and so on. As a result of this analysis a framework on an eco-social new deal for regions in crisis is proposed. This means alternative strategies on all relevant tiers for regional development, the european, federal, länder, regional and local level. Theories of vertical and horizontal interweaving (Scharpf) and alternative macroeconomic strategies in combination with the state of the art of regional innovation strategies are discussed briefly.

Musikstädte as real and imaginary soundscapes: urban musical images as literary motifs in twentieth-century German modernism

PhDThis study examines German literary images of musical life as part of the wider sound identity of the modern German city at the turn of the twentieth century. Focussing on a forty-year period from 1890 to 1930, synonymous with the emergence of the modern German metropolis as an aesthetic object, the project assesses, compares and contrasts how musical life in the Musikstädte was perceived and portrayed by writers in an increasingly noisy urban environment. How does urban musical life influence and condition city writings? What are the differences and similarities between the writings on various musical cities? Can an urban textual sound identity be derived from these differences and similarities? The approach employed to answer these questions is a new, cross-disciplinary one to urban sound in literature, moving beyond reading the key sounds of the urban soundscape using urban musicology, sensorial anthropology and cultural poetics towards a literary contextualisation of the urban aural experience. The literary motifs of the symphony, the gramophone and urban noise are put under the spotlight through the analysis of a wide range of modernist works by authors who have a special relationship with music. At the centre of this analysis are the Kaffeehausliteratur authors Hermann Bahr, Alfred Polgar and Peter Altenberg, the then Munich-based author Thomas Mann and the lesser known René Schickele. The analysis of these particular works is framed in the music-geographical context of the Musikstadt and literary underpinnings of this topos, ranging from Ingeborg Bachmann to Hans Mayer and, once again, Thomas Mann. In analysing these texts, the methodological approach devised by Strohm, who identifies the blending of a range of urban sounds as a definition of urban space and identity, is applied. His ideas combine historical literary analysis, musical history and urban sociology. They are rarely used in the analysis of the auditory environment.Arts and Humanities Research Council Westfield TrustWestfield Trust Studentship Arts and Humanities Reseach Council (AHRC

Using in situ trace-element determinations to monitor partial-melting processes in metabasites

All rights reserved.Peak metamorphism (800–850°C, 8–10 kbar) in the Harts Range Meta-Igneous Complex (Harts Range, central Australia) was associated with localized partial melting by the reaction hornblende + plagioclase + quartz + H2O = garnet + clinopyroxene + titanite + melt. In situ trace-element determinations of prograde, peak and retrograde minerals in migmatitic metabasites and associated tonalitic melts using laser-ablation ICP–MS has allowed monitoring of a range of partial-melting processes (melting, melt segregation and back-reaction between crystallizing melt and restitic minerals). Mass balance calculations indicate that titanite is a major carrier of trace elements such as Ti, Nb, Ta, Sm, U and Th, and therefore may be an important accessory phase to control the redistribution of these elements during the partial melting of amphibolites. Titanite preferentially incorporates Ta over Nb and, hence, residual titanite might assist in the formation of melts with high Nb/Ta. The fact that single minerals record different rare earth element (REE) patterns, from prograde to peak to retrograde conditions, demonstrates that REE diffusion is not significant up to 800°C. Therefore, trace-element analysis in minerals can be a powerful tool to investigate high-grade metamorphic processes beyond the limits given by major elements.A. C. Storkey, J. Hermann, M. The metastatic niche in the liver: tilling the soil for pancreatic cancer progression

    No full text
Despite new developments in adjuvant and palliative treatment, pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) still has a very poor prognosis. One of the main factors that prevent surgical resection of the tumor in curative intent is metastasis at the time of diagnosis. This perspective article summarizes new insights on the influence of premalignant lesions and PDAC itself on the formation of the metastatic niche in the liver.PC Hermann is supported by a Max Eder Fellowship of the German Cancer Aid [111746], by the Hector Foundation Cancer Research Grant (M.65.1), and Baustein Grants of the University Ulm [PC Hermann (LSBN0097) and A Hann (LSBR.0035)]. Ways to the inner space. Hermann Hesse "Demian" und "Siddharta"

    No full text
The bachelor thesis deals with the analysis of two works "Siddhartha" and "Demian" by the renowned German-swiss author Hermann Hesse. The aim of this text is a theoretical reflection on different approaches to self-knowledge, which is the central idea of these works. The following text examines the life of Hermann Hesse since his work is largely autobiographical. It also provides a new perspective on the perception of the novel "Demian", which detailed analysis is based on the analytical psychology of C. G. Jung. It focuses on archetypes, symbolism, and mythology. The next part addresses the influences of Buddhist and Hindu philosophy on the creation of the novel "Siddhartha" and identifies its features based on scientific literature

We and others have previously identified a subpopulation of pancreatic cancer stem cells within the tumor as a critical therapeutic target and additionally shown that the tumor stroma represents not only a restrictive barrier for successful drug delivery, but also serves as a paracrine niche for cancer stem cells. Therefore, we embarked on a large-scale investigation on the effects of combining chemotherapy, hedgehog pathway inhibition, and mTOR inhibition in a preclinical mouse model of pancreatic cancer. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Prospective and randomized testing in a set of almost 200 subcutaneous and orthotopic implanted whole-tissue primary human tumor xenografts. RESULTS: The combined targeting of highly chemoresistant cancer stem cells as well as their more differentiated progenies, together with abrogation of the tumor microenvironment by targeting the stroma and enhancing tissue penetration of the chemotherapeutic agent translated into significantly prolonged survival in preclinical models of human pancreatic cancer. Most pronounced therapeutic effects were observed in gemcitabine-resistant patient-derived tumors. Intriguingly, the proposed triple therapy approach could be further enhanced by using a PEGylated formulation of gemcitabine, which significantly increased its bioavailability and tissue penetration, resulting in a further improved overall outcome. CONCLUSIONS: This multimodal therapeutic strategy should be further explored in the clinical setting as its success may eventually improve the poor prognosis of patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma

    No full text
