Johannes Bogaert, Dutch clerk of New Amsterdam (present-day New York), reports to Holland on the Dutch takeover of New Sweden. He accounts how the Dutch travelled to New Sweden and took over Fort Christina and outlying posts with little incident. On the way back to New Amerstam, the Dutch discovered that Indians had attacked and killed settlers living in neighboring Dutch villages (on present-day Staten Island). This article is part of a Primary Source Material collection compiled by the New Sweden Commemorative Commission in 1988

Psychological and cultural insights into consumption of luxury western brands in India

    No full text
India has always had wealthy elites such as the maharajas, upper class and royalty that consume luxury products throughout its consumption history. The relatively recent economic rise of the middle class with an increase in disposable income is leading to consumption of luxury en mass. This qualitative study examines why consumers buy luxury, what they believe luxury is and how their perception of luxury impacts buying behaviour in the context of India. The present study explores luxury constructs drawn from the literature and provides some explanation for luxury consumption behaviour in India. The findings reveal that psychological and cultural factors in Indian society play a major part in shaping luxury consumption. While the findings suggest little support for homogenous luxury preference, Indian consumers share cultural characteristics of lavish consumption of luxury and display of wealth in social functions. Luxury reflects conspicuous consumption and status, and signals wealth for individuals, and conveys social identity and status in Indian society

Abstract: Patrick Dendale & Julie Van Bogaert, Reflections on the definitional criteria and the problems with identifying evidential markers in French In this article, we discuss the possible problems one encounters when adhering to Anderson's (1986) four defining criteria for evidentials. The discussion takes an article by Boye & Harder (2009) and previous analyses of French evidential markers as its starting point. We first consider the conceptual criterion of "source of information", holding it up against larger conceptualizations, that encompass epistemic modality, as well as taking evidential subcategories into account. Next, source of information is examined in the light of the problem of polysemy and pragmatically derived evidential meanings. Thirdly, we look into the issue of primary predications as opposed to specifications of main predications and finally, into the grammatical versus lexical status of evidentials. By way of conclusion, we argue for definitional criteria that are relative to the type of study one seeks to conduct

Learning and memory consolidation processes in children and adults: a neurophysiological and neuropsychological investigation

Learning and memory consolidation processes in children and adults: a
neurophysiological and neuropsychological investigation.

Sleep is a complex and active state of the brain, associated with essential functional changes
[1]. Accumulated evidence in the adult population indicates that sleep participates in the
consolidation of declarative (i.e. memory for facts and episodes) and procedural (i.e. skills
and habits) memory, allowing novel information to be integrated for the long term in cerebral
networks [2]. Whether sleep supports memory consolidation in children likewise and to the
same extent than in adults remains disputed. In this framework, I have developed
experiments aimed at investigating sleep-dependent consolidation processes both in children
and adults, using behavioral and neurophysiological techniques (magneto-encephalography
[MEG]; electro-encephalography [EEG]; functional magnetic resonance imaging [fMRI]). To
sum up, researches conducted during my PhD thesis have contributed to start unraveling
neurophysiological mechanisms participating in sleep-dependent consolidation processes.
On the one hand, I report that despite a lack of detectable behavioral differences, posttraining
sleep plays a role in reshaping the cerebral networks subtending implicit motor
sequence learning in adults [3]. I also showed using a motor adaptation task [4] that sleep
contributes to the consolidation of procedural memory in children [5]. On the other hand, I
have evidenced neuromagnetic correlates of learning novel semantic representations in
children [6-7], and is currently finalizing the analysis of the effect of a post-training nap on the
consolidation of these representations. Finally, I showed in epileptic children that interictal
epileptic discharges (IED) during sleep impairs declarative memory consolidation processes
[8-9], and that this phenomenon is reversible upon pharmacological treatment suppressing
IED. Altogether, these findings advocate the need to explore further memory consolidation
and its neurophysiological basis in children, both healthy and suffering from various brain
pathologies [10].
[1] Urbain C.
