Káma Means Hello
Káma Means Hello is a short story about language contact. It follows two young women from different cultures who speak different languages and unexpectedly meet each other after one is driven from her home. In lieu of using real-world languages with real-world cultural connotations, the two main characters speak two different constructed languages, and the narrative both examines language contact from a technical standpoint and tells the gay love story of two women meeting behind their families\u27 backs. Káma Means Hello was a passion project of the author, who is both a lesbian and a linguist. The appendix of the story discusses how the two languages were made and why one would construct a language to begin with
Current status of gravitational wave observations
The first generation of gravitational wave interferometric detectors have taken data at, or close to, their design sensitivity. This data has been searched for a broad range of gravitational wave signatures. An overview of gravitational wave search methods and results are presented. Searches for gravitational waves from unmodelled burst sources, compact binary coalescences, continuous wave sources and stochastic backgrounds are discussed
iPods in early childhood: Mobile technologies and story telling
Mobile technologies are making inroads in many aspects of education. The potential of many of these devices is being explored in a range of educational environments but early childhood educators are not commonly early adopters of these new technologies. This paper examines the process and impact of iPods on these students’ creation of original digital stories to support their understanding of how young children learn. The pedagogical approach is described in detail together with observations on the process, lessons learned, and extensions of the activity into other discipline areas
The recruitment event planned and executed as a Bachelor's degree in business administration in Satakunta University of Applied Sciences has been commissioned to the staffing services company, Hello Fello. The recruitment event was held at Satakunta University of Applied Sciences and at the event, employees were asked for occasional and part-time jobs.
The structure of this thesis consists of the theoretical framework and empirical part and its appendices. The theoretical part of the thesis focused on three main topics - recruitment, event planning and marketing. The content of the reference framework is limited to the purpose of the thesis and to the whole empirical part.
This thesis is a functional thesis, and the author was actively involved in the planning and implementation of the recruiting event that is the subject of the thesis. This work is a participatory and observational case study because the whole thesis is based on an organized event. A qualitative research was used as a method for this work as the aim of the work was to describe and understand the phenomenon, in this case the event, of the subject.
The aim of this thesis was to find out how profitable a recruitment event is as a recruitment method for both the company and the jobseeker. The goal of the product itself was to find good employees for the growth-seeking Hello Fello. And because it is a new business, the aim was to increase Hello Fello's reputation in Pori and elsewhere in Satakunta, while at the same time strengthening the company's brand image and identity.
All in all, this thesis supported its purpose, and this type of recruitment event must, on the basis of the results, be profitable also in the future when there is a need for recruiting. Approximately 100 people participated in the event and a total of 10 job applications were received. At the event, Hello Fello was given a spectacular and remarkable recruitment point

New technologies, new pedagogies: Mobile technologies and new ways of teaching and learning
This paper describes a major development and research study that investigated the use of mobile technologies in higher education. The project investigated the educational potential of two ubiquitous mobile devices: Palm smart phones and iPod digital audio players (mp3 players). An action learning framework for professional development was designed and implemented with a group of teachers from a Faculty of Education. Each teacher or team created pedagogies to implement appropriate use of a mobile device in different subject areas in higher education. This paper describes the project aims, design and implementation in four phases, together with a description of the project management and communication factors that helped to ensure its success
Reconfiguring the shipping news : Maritime's hidden histories and the politics of gender display
This paper discusses the book Hello Sailor! The Hidden History of Gay Life at Sea published in 2003 by Paul Baker and Jo Stanley re-interpreted as a landmark temporary, exhibition Hello Sailor! Gay Life on the Ocean Wave at Merseyside Maritime Museum, Liverpool from where it will travel in 2007 to a number of other maritime museums. Based largely on oral history interviews and part of a hidden histories project, the book recovers the previously repressed histories of gay sailors in the ‘gay heaven’ of the merchant navy. It historically spans, roughly mid to late twentieth century. This paper seeks to explore the construction of gay seafarers presented in the book and latterly through museum display. It reveals what can be understood about the re-presentation of gendered identities and relations through the celebration of camp and cross-dressing. Baker and Stanley draw on queer theory rather than gay and lesbian studies and argue that the recovered history is not about civil rights but is rather ‘a politics of carnival, transgression and parody’ (Baker and Stanley, 2003, p. 19). The book and to a greater extent the exhibition however only partially unravel two important issues: sex and misogyny. This paper asks what light ‘hidden histories’, re-presented in museums can shed on gender and sexual relations in the present
