    The Dossier by IndraStra: Perspectives on Trump's South Asia Policy

    On August 21, 2017, United States' President Donald Trump provided the roadmap to America's next South Asia strategy, mainly centered on America"s Afghanistan Policy. Given the United States, longtime involvement in the region, America"s Afghanistan policy plays a keyrole in United States overall foreign policy. Given the primacy attached, Trump"s speech reflected two very significant factors: First, there was a clear identification and condemnation of Pakistan as a significant actor contributing to terrorism. Secondly, there was greater confidence expressed in India"s role in the region at large and Afghanistan in particular. Keeping this context, the present series attempts to articulate three key questions: 1. What does Trump's new South Asia policy hold for U.S., India, and China? 2. Is there a continuity/change in America's policy and what can be further expected? 3. What will be the larger implications of Trump's new South Asia policy, if any? To address the queries, the series is divided into three perspectives- American, Indian and Chinese. Reflecting on America's foreign policy under the Trump administration, Dr. Monish Tourangbam argues that the new U.S. strategy on Afghanistan is designed to avoid losing, rather than winning in Afghanistan. While arguing from an Indian perspective, Tridivesh Singh Maini suggests that while it is tough to predict how U.S. policy will pan out towards Afghanistan, one major shift in Trump's approach is that unlike previous U.S. administration's, he has not really drawn any red lines for India"s role in Afghanistan. Drawing on the Chinese perspective, Dr. Sriparna Pathak argues that as China shares an "all-weather friendship" with Pakistan, public shaming of Pakistan for shielding terrorists is clearly not something that is acceptable to China. However, with respect to terrorism, China has its own woes emanating primarily from its Xinjiang province. Therefore, the American policy in South Asia, which in all probability will see greater American involvement in the region, will have to be carefully considered by the foreign policy mandarins in Beijing. The author explains that disputes arising out of international bilateral and syndicated loan agreements are generally considered to be arbitrable, while international bond disputes are often derived from the controversies over the application of mandatory national laws and the compliance with securities regulation provisions - so the arbitrability of international bond disputes depends on the acceptance of the arbitrability of securities regulatory claims

    Efficiency of power management circuits depends significantly on their constituent switches and rectifiers. The demands of technology are increasingly running up against the intrinsic properties of Si based power devices. 4H-Silicon Carbide (SiC) has superior properties that make it attractive for high power applications. SiC rectifiers are already a competitive choice and SiC switches have also been commercialized recently. Junction Barrier Schottky (JBS) diodes, which combine the advantages of PN and Schottky, have higher Figure of Merit (FOM) as rectifiers. Among switches, a robust and mature process has been developed for Silicon Carbide Vertical Junction Field Effect Transistors (VJFETs), which currently gives it the highest unipolar FOM. Switches are frequently combined with anti-parallel diodes in power circuits. This thesis describes the development of a SiC-based monolithically integrated power switch and diode. Monolithic integration increases reliability and efficiency, and reduces cost. Because of their superior properties and similarities in fabrication, we chose the SiC VJFET and JBS diode as the switch and rectifier. Detailed design, fabrication and characterization of the integrated switch to block above 800 V and conduct current beyond 100 A/cm2 is explained. In this process, the first physics-based 2-D compact model is developed for reverse leakage in a JBS diode as a function of design parameters. Since the gate-channel junctions of SiC VJFETs cannot be assumed to be abrupt, an existing analytical model for Si VJFETs is extended to account for graded gate-channel junctions. Using these analytical models, design rules are developed for the VJFET and JBS diode. Finite element simulations are used to find the best anode layout of the JBS diode and optimize electric field termination in the integrated device to ensure their capability to operate at high voltage. Finally, a spin-on glass based process is developed for filling the gate trenches of the VJFET to improve long-term robustness in extreme environments. The integrated power switch developed in this thesis points to the attractions of monolithic integration in SiC power circuits. Analytical compact design equations derived here will facilitate faster and easier design of switches and rectifiers for desired circuit operation.Ph.     The effect of pre-operative intravenous clonidine infusion on patient hemodynamics in those undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy

    Context: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is one of the most common laparoscopic procedures done. Laparoscopy involves pneumoperitoneum and its subsequent effects. It involves changes in cardiorespiratory system. Earlier studies have documented usefulness of Clonidine in this context. Aims: (1) Evaluation of hemodynamic changes in patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy receiving pre-operative clonidine infusion. (2) Effect of intravenous clonidine on post-operative analgesia measured in time duration for first rescue analgesic. Settings and Design: This was a prospective, randomized, double blind study. It was conducted at a single specialty high volume tertiary care center. Subjects and Methods: The study took place at a tertiary specialty institute from July 2012 to September 2012. It involved 60 cases randomized into 2 groups by simple randomization. Statistical Analysis Used: The statistical analysis for the inter group hemodynamic parameters and numerical data was done using paired t-test, while categorical data was analyzed by Chi-square test. P ≤ 0.005 was considered to be significant. Results: Clonidine group of patients had significantly lower systolic, diastolic and mean arterial blood pressures with significantly lower heart rate and also statistically significant prolongation of post-operative analgesia and sedation. Conclusions: Clonidine pre-operatively given as infusion in dose of 4 mcg/kg in laparoscopic surgeries, provides a stable hemodynamic state with minimal additional drug requirement and good post-operative analgesia

    Dose and duration dependent cytotoxicity of aroclor 1254 in the testis of mice

    Objective: To evaluate the dose and duration dependent cytotoxicity of aroclor 1254 on mice testis.Methods: The study tests the hypothesis that in vivo exposure of very low dose aroclor 1254, comparable to that of possible human exposure from different environmental sources, will provoke dose and duration dependent histological damage in the mice testis. Male mice were orally administered with the two doses 0.1 and 1.0 mg/kg b.w /d. of aroclor 1254 for 7, 14, 21 and 28 d.Results: Results showed the degenerative changes in the testis of mice, namely, atrophied seminiferous tubules, expanded space in interstitial and necrosis in the germinal epithelial cells of seminiferous tubules, of the seminiferous tubules and deceleration of spermatogenesis.Conclusions: Therefore, the results of the present study suggested that the sub-acute exposure of very low doses of aroclor 1254, can subsequently mediate the cytoskeleton dysfunction in the testis of mice
