    Adam Smith's four-stage theory provides the framework for his writings on history. The fourth stage is the commercial epoch; the culmination of history in this stage is a key component in the conventional interpretation of Adam Smith as a prophet of commercialism. In two historical case studies Smith shows the capacity of commercial society to regenerate itself. This potent capacity suggests that commercial society is inevitable.     224-231This study had systematically assessed the cost and material efficiency of circular water tanks with varying capacities, closely examining the influence of cylindrical height-to-diameter (H/D) ratios within the range of 0.2 to 2.0. The investigation has delved comprehensively into the effects of wind and seismic forces, accounting for both tank-filled and empty conditions across the entire spectrum of H/D ratios. The analysis has specifically focused on water storage capacities of 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000, 1100, and 1200 kiloliters. Employing an in-house Software Program developed for the Design of Elevated Circular Water Tanks and adhering to the guidelines of IS 3370:2021, the study has conducted a thorough parameter comparison to reveal substantial cost savings achievable through strategic H/D ratio selection. Particularly noteworthy is the revelation that the H/D ratio optimizing cost aligns with the configuration that experiences minimal wind and seismic forces. Informed parameter have choices emerged as a driving force behind considerable reductions in material consumption, underscoring the software program's efficacy as a pivotal tool for designing elevated water tanks, particularly in scenarios where conventional analysis and design software lack accessibility

    679-686This study has systematically explored the design parameters of Intze water tanks through a parametric investigation, considering cylindrical height-to-diameter ratios (H/D) and conical dome angles (θ) in pursuit of an optimized cost-efficient design. The selected Intze water tanks have had capacities ranging from 200 to 1200 kiloliters, with H/D ranging from 0.2 to 1.0. The angles considered for the conical dome with the vertical axis have included 45°, 50°, and 55°. An in-house software program, developed in C++, has used Heuristic optimization methods and integrated features for analysis, design, and estimation. The design approach has followed the limit state method, incorporating crack width calculations for all water-retaining members. The research findings have indicated specific design preferences, such as the preference for an H/D ratio of 0.8 for the 200-kL tank and a consistent recommendation of a 0.3 H/D ratio for capacities between 400 kL and 800 kL. Notably, there has been a deliberate shift in design for capacities ranging from 800 kL to 1200 kL, favoring lower H/D ratios between 0.2 and 0.3. The study has also identified cost-efficient strategies, with the utilization of a 50° conical dome angle proving to be costeffective for the 200-kL tank, while a 45° angle has been recommended for capacities ranging from 400 kL to 1200 kL. The research highlights that optimizing H/D ratios and θ values can significantly reduce material usage and costs in water tank construction, offering substantial savings in large-scale projects

    The universalizability of the categorial imperative : Re-examining Kant’s Maxim of Duty

    In this dissertation, I defend Kantian ethics in terms of the universalizability of moral duties as moral laws against relativistic ethics like traditionalism and communitarianism. The problem I deal with, in special reference to Kant, is whether our actions are or should be judged by local moral determinants like individuality, community, religion or society, or by universal determinants of Kantian spirit. Those who follow local moral determinants, criticize Kantian universalizability. But I consider universality to be a strong moral determinant and therefore I defend it, and Kant. My argument, which I develop comprehensively in this dissertation, is twofold: Firstly, local determinants are based on historicism and therefore limited in scope; they leave room for partiality and discrimination among individuals. They are also dually-standardized – one for the first person (I use the term agent) and another for the second and third agents, all of whom differ from each other. Secondly, local determinants considered to be moral criteria are challenging to justify: Their projection of what a person is is not the only or real picture of a person as a moral agent. In other words, local determinants don't affect––or their proponents like MacIntyre and Taylor overlook––our deep sense of moral orientation, which deems every human being as the same. Our deep sense of morality has a need for a common standard of morality. With these arguments, I claim that the Kantian model of morality, in contrast, presents a real picture of a person and his sense of morality, though it is quite hard to find a person in the real world who acts in accordance with this moral sense. But our failure in following our deep moral sense does not mean that morality is a matter of individual choice or is merely locally-determined. The universal moral law is, after all, supreme and something to be achieved in the realization of what we are as moral and autonomous beings. The concept of local moral determinants is in fact weak in the sense that one can justify a wrong and irresponsible action as a right action, whereas, universal determinants prohibit us from following such a justification of a wrong action as right. In brief, this dissertation aims to critically evaluate the two kinds of determinants and their link to our practical life from a moral point of view. Another crucial dimension does remain in the debate at hand––the epistemic dimension––but due to the specificity of the project shall remain untouched in this dissertation

    The present paper deals with a collection of alpheid shrimps from Vietnam received by Mr R. Serene, formerly Director the Institute of Oceanography, Nhatrang (Vietnam). Though small in size the material has proved to be fairly rich. It contains 23 species belonging to the genera Alpheopsis Coutiere, Synalpheus Bate and Alpheus Fabricius, the last named genus accounting for all but three species. Two new species, one each belonging to Alpheopsis and Alpheus, have been briefly described by the author (Tiwari, 1962) in an earlier paper. The remaining species are already known and some of them have an extensive distribution in the Indo-West-Pacific

    Study of the secondary droplet breakup mechanism and regime map of Newtonian and power law fluids at high liquid–gas density ratio

    This work reports the numerical investigation of the secondary breakup of non-Newtonian droplets at different Weber W e g and Ohnesorge O h l numbers. As part of this work, an in-house coupled level set volume of fluid solver is developed based on OpenFOAM libraries. It uses improved curvature calculation techniques like smoothening and the closest point search method. Flow is assumed to be axisymmetric. Approximately 95 different cases were simulated to investigate the effect of W e g and O h l numbers on secondary breakup for Newtonian, shear-thinning, and shear-thickening fluids. O h l varies from 10 - 3 to 10 1, and, correspondingly, W e g varies from 10 1 to 10 3. The non-Newtonian rheology is modeled as a power-law fluid, and the power-law index n ranged from 0.2 - 1.8. The present work describes the flow field near the droplet and the effects of non-Newtonian parameters and viscosity on the flow field. The various aspects of droplet dynamics like droplet deformation ratio y, deformation rate y ˙, and coefficient of pressure C p are studied and compared with the internal flow theory. A generalized relation for critical Weber number W e g, c r is proposed for both Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids and is shown in a phase diagram plot to map the different regimes of secondary droplet breakup. © 2022 Author(s)
