    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Lineage-linked biofilm formation and widespread multidrug resistance among indian Acinetobacter baumannii clinical isolates

    AIMS: This study aimed to investigate the diversity and determinants of biofilm formation among clinical Acinetobacter baumannii Indian isolates and assess their relationship with antimicrobial resistance profiles, biofilm-associated genes, and genetic lineages revealed through whole-genome analysis.METHODS AND RESULTS: 230 A. baumannii clinical isolates across India (2015-2022) were tested for antibiotic susceptibility using the VITEK 2 system. Biofilm formation was quantified via the Tissue Culture Plate method. Whole genome sequencing (Illumina MiSeq) and bioinformatic analysis were performed to identify biofilm-associated genes, antimicrobial resistance genes and sequence types. Statistical associations were assessed using Kruskal-Wallis, Spearman's, and Fisher's tests. 85.22% of isolates were multidrug-resistant (MDR), and 100% exhibited biofilm formation, with 52.17% strong, 39.57% moderate, and 8.26% weak biofilm producers. Genes including ompA, bfmR, pgaA, pgaB, and pgaD were universally present. No significant association was observed between biofilm formation and antibiotic resistance (P = 0.55), specimen type (P = 0.54), or the presence of specific biofilm-related genes (P > 0.05). 21 sequence types (STs) were identified, with ST2 being the most prevalent (51.73%). Strong biofilm formation was more common in ST164, ST1, and ST575. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates a high prevalence of MDR and strong biofilm-forming A. baumannii isolates in India. Biofilm formation appeared independent of resistance or gene carriage but showed lineage-linked variation across sequence types

    A retrospective cohort study of monthly rifampicin, ofloxacin and minocycline in the management of leprosy at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, London, United Kingdom.

    INTRODUCTION: The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends rifampicin, dapsone and clofazimine multi-drug therapy (MDT) for the treatment of leprosy. Severe adverse effects include dapsone hypersensitivity syndrome, skin pigmentation, haemolytic anaemia, and hepatitis. At the Hospital for Tropical Diseases (HTD), London, United Kingdom monthly rifampicin, ofloxacin and minocycline (mROM) is used as first line treatment for leprosy. OBJECTIVES: To determine the clinical outcomes and experiences of individuals treated with mROM. METHODS: A retrospective study of individuals with leprosy who were prescribed mROM at HTD was conducted. Demographic and clinical data were collected on outcomes including relapses, leprosy reactions, bacterial index (BI) and adverse effects. Individuals were interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire to understand their experiences of mROM. RESULTS: 29 individuals were identified and 20 interviewed. 26 (89.7%) individuals completed monthly mROM. 9 (31%) had switched from WHO MDT to mROM (five of whom (55.6%) were interviewed). BI reduced significantly following mROM treatment (p = 0.04). 17 individuals (58.6%) experienced a leprosy reaction. One of the 29 (3.4%) relapsed. The relapse rate was 9.5/1000 person years. 49 reports of adverse effects were either mild or moderate. The most frequent adverse effect (14/49) reported was orange discolouration of urine. No adverse effect required hospitalisation or discontinuation of mROM. Most individuals reported that skin lesions improved by the time they had completed mROM. CONCLUSIONS: In this small study in a non-endemic setting mROM was safe, effective and acceptable. mROM therapy is associated with improvement in skin lesions, decline in bacterial index and acceptable adverse effects. Larger, prospective, randomised studies are needed to determine whether relapse rates with mROM are equivalent or better than WHO MDT and to provide robust data on the seemingly better adverse effect profile of mROM

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Potential links between human bloodstream infection by Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium and international transmission to Colombia

    Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium is a prevalent food-borne pathogen that is usually associated with gastroenteritis infection. S. Typhimurium is also a major cause of bloodstream infections in sub-Saharan Africa, and is responsible for invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella (iNTS) disease. The pathogen also causes bloodstream infection in Colombia, but there has been a lack of information about the S. Typhimurium isolates that were responsible. Here, we investigated the genomic characteristics of 270 S. Typhimurium isolates from bloodstream infection patients in Colombia, collected between 1997 and 2017. We used whole-genome sequencing to analyse multidrug-resistant (MDR) profiles, plasmid distribution, and to define phylogenetic relationships. The study identified the distinct sequence types and phylogenetic clusters of S. Typhimurium prevalent in Colombia. The majority of isolates (90.8%) were ST19, which is distinct from the iNTS-associated S. Typhimurium in subSaharan Africa (ST313). The two prominent clusters of MDR S. Typhimurium were either DT104 or closely related to the LT2 reference strain. We used a phylogenetic approach to associate the Colombian clusters with global S. Typhimurium isolates from public databases. By putting the Colombian S. Typhimurium isolates in the context of the global spread of DT104, ST313 and LT2-related variants, we found that the Colombian clusters were introduced to the country via multiple independent events that were consistent with international transmission. We suggest that the acquisition of quinolone and chloramphenicol resistance by the Colombian S. Typhimurium isolates was driven by horizontal gene transfer. Three ST313 isolates that caused bloodstream infection in Colombia were identified. These ST313 isolates were related to the Malawian ST313 lineage 3 & UK ST313, and shared a similarly high invasiveness index. To our knowledge, this is the first report of ST313 in Colombia

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
