    Edna Frederikson papers

    No full text
Edna Frederikson (1904-1998) was an author of novels and poetry, as well as a professor at Madison College (later James Madison University) in Harrisonburg, Virginia. She met Katherine Anne Porter at the 1940 Bread Loaf Writer's Conference in Middleburg, Vermont. Porter was especially helpful to Frederikson in the early 1940s as Frederikson made the transition from teaching to creative writing. The collection consists of correspondence between Frederikson and Porter. Important subjects include writing, mutual acquaintances, and events in their personal lives

Biomonitoring in rivers adopting environmental DNA (eDNA)

    No full text
A monitoring technique capable of assessing the status of an aquatic ecosystem is needed for reversing negative trends in river biodiversity. Recently, an innovative technique for detecting the degree of biodiversity based on environmental DNA traces (mucus, shed skins etc.) has been proposed (Carraro et al., 2020). This eDNA-based biomonitoring relies on the collection and processing of water samples containing genetic material released by organisms. In recent years, the research community has made significant efforts to advance the identification of species from biological samples, for instance by expanding genetic reference databases. However, eDNA technique implementation is hampered by a lack of knowledge about the dynamics of biological traces in rivers. Here, the aim is to investigate the transport of eDNA in water streams, while considering processes such as degradation and spreading.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Rivers, Ports, Waterways and Dredging Engineerin

Comparing sample mediums for detecting invertebrates using eDNA on Prince Edward Island

Environmental DNA (eDNA) as a biodiversity monitoring strategy can be a time-saving and cost-saving resource when compared to morphometric identification. Aquatic survey programs are hesitant to adopt metabarcoding-based eDNA sequencing as an official monitoring strategy due to molecular method shortcomings, namely amplification bias, sequencing material costs and incomplete reference databases. This study aims to develop a protocol for metabarcoding coastal crustaceans on Prince Edward Island using novel COI gene metabarcoding primers designed by Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Next-generation sequencing results from sediment, water, and unsorted bulk tissue extracts are compared to small-bodied crustacean traps and known PEI crustacean assemblages. Sampling occurred in June and August of 2021, with two additional sample time points from the summers of 2016 and 2017 to provide preliminary spatiotemporal community comparisons. The goal of this study is to develop a protocol using eDNA that may expedite aquatic crustacean biodiversity surveys and supplement the techniques currently employed in the watersheds on Prince Edward Island

Self-ordering creativity and an independent work space: Edna Clarke Hall’s poem pictures in the early 1920s

This thesis argues that the Poem Pictures made by Edna Clarke Hall (1879-1979) in the early 1920s signify new approaches to the treatment of ‘neuroses’ in British psychiatry following World War One, and contends that the artist’s biography is pertinent to understanding the production and meaning of these works. These hypotheses are demonstrated by considering Dr Henry Head’s responses to Clarke Hall when she sought his aid in 1920, following a period of emotional imbalance and physical illness. The thesis proposes that the philosophies underlying Head’s advice can be traced, via his acquaintance with psychiatrist Dr W.H.R. Rivers, to the unique psychotherapies practiced at Edinburgh’s Craiglockhart War Hospital from c.1916-17. Analysing archival holdings, it suggests that the Poem Pictures are Clark Hall’s creative manifestation of Head’s use of autognosis, by which a patient repeatedly verbalizes their subjective position. In relation to Craiglockhart’s ‘ergotherapy’, particular significance is placed on Head’s advice that Clarke Hall purchase a studio, and it is proposed that this space was imperative to the artist’s recovery and burgeoning career in the 1920s. In turn, this thesis situates the Poem Pictures and their author within the context of middle-class women’s participation in the arts in the inter-war decade

    Creative Project: Dale and Edna

    No full text
abstract: Dale and Edna is a hybrid animated film and videogame experienced in virtual reality with dual storylines that increases in potential meanings through player interaction. Developed and played within Unreal Engine 4 using the HTC Vive, Oculus, or PlayStation VR, Dale and Edna allows for players to passively enjoy the film element of the project or partake in the active videogame portion. Exploration of the virtual story world yields more information about that world, which may or may not alter the audience’s perception of the world. The film portion of the project is a static narrative with a plot that cannot be altered by players within the virtual world. In the static plot, the characters Dale and Edna discover and subsequently combat an alien invasion that appears to have the objective of demolishing Dale’s prize pumpkin. However, the aliens in the film plot are merely projections created by AR headsets that are reflecting Jimmy’s gameplay on his tablet. The audience is thus invited to question their perception of reality through combined use of VR and AR. The game element is a dynamic narrative scaffold that does not unfold as a traditional narrative might. Instead, what a player observes and interacts with within the sandbox level will determine the meaning those players come away from this project with. Both elements of the project feature modular code construction so developers can return to both the film and game portions of the project and make additions. This paper will analyze the chronological development of the project along with the guiding philosophy that was revealed in the result. Keywords: virtual reality, film, videogame, sandbo
