    Reversing The Twenty Questions Game

    No full text
Twenty questions is a widely popular verbal game. In recent years, many computerized versions of this game have been developed in which a user thinks of an entity and a computer attempts to guess this entity by asking a series of boolean-type (yes/no) questions. In this research, we aim to reverse this game by making the computer choose an entity at random. The human aims to guess this entity by quizzing the computer with natural language queries which the computer will then attempt to parse using a boolean question answering model. The game ends when the human is successfully able to guess the entity of the computer's choice.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, This paper is a graduate course project for North Carolina State University, written for the Natural Language Processing class in Fall 2021. A versatile method for the preparation of indolizidine alkaloids from 1-benzyloxy-5-(p-toluenesulfonamido)-3-alken-2-ols as stereodefined key intermediates has been developed. The utility of this approach was demonstrated by the synthesis of (+)-monomorine I.PT: J; CR: BACKVALL JE, 1990, J ORG CHEM, V55, P826 BAILEY AJ, 1993, INORG CHEM, V32, P268 BERRY MB, 1997, CHEM COMMUN 1121, P2141 CUNY GD, 1995, SYNLETT, P519 DALY JW, 1983, SCIENCE, P705 DALY JW, 1986, ALKALOIDS CHEM BIOL, V4, CH1 GAO Y, 1995, J AM CHEM SOC, V117, P5399 GRIFFITH WP, 1987, J CHEM SOC CHEM COMM, P1625 GRIFFITH WP, 1990, ALDRICHIM ACTA, V23, P13 HAMADA Y, 1987, J ORG CHEM, V52, P1252 HOWARD AS, 1986, ALKALOIDS, V28, CH6 ITO M, 1991, TETRAHEDRON, V47, P9329 KROHN K, 1998, J PRAK CHEM-CHEM ZTG, V340, P26 MICHAEL JP, 1995, NAT PROD REP, V12, P535 MOMOSE T, 1997, J CHEM SOC PERK 0507, P1315 MUNCHHOF MJ, 1995, J AM CHEM SOC, V117, P5399 NUMATA A, 1987, ALKALOIDS, V31, CH3 PARIKH JR, 1967, J AM CHEM SOC, V89, P5505 PETTERSSONFASTH H, 1995, J ORG CHEM, V60, P6091 PETTERSSONFASTH P, 1994, THESIS UPPSALA U RITTER FJ, 1973, EXPERIENTIA, V29, P530 ROYER J, 1985, J ORG CHEM, V50, P670 SALIOU C, 1991, TETRAHEDRON LETT, V32, P3365 SHAWE TT, 1994, J ORG CHEM, V59, P5841 SOMFAI P, 1997, ACTA CHEM SCAND, V51, P1024 STEVENS RV, 1982, J CHEM SOC CHEM COMM, P102 STOWELL JC, 1979, SYNTHESIS-STUTTGART, P132 STOWELL JC, 1990, ORG SYNTH COLL, V7, P140 TAKAHATA H, 1993, ALKALOIDS, V44, CH3 TAKAHATA H, 1993, HETEROCYCLES, V36, P2777 TOKUYAMA T, 1986, TETRAHEDRON, V42, P3453 TROST BM, 1978, J AM CHEM SOC, V100, P3426 YAMAGUCHI R, 1987, J ORG CHEM, V52, P2094 YAMAZAKI N, 1988, TETRAHEDRON LETT, V29, P5767 YAMAZAKI N, 1989, J AM CHEM SOC, V111, P1396; NR: 35; TC: 9; J9: EUR J ORG CHEM; PG: 4; GA: 313PNSource type: Electronic(1

Regular Revolutions: Feminist Travels in Julia Alvarez's <em>How the García Girls Lost Their Accents</em> and <em>In the Time of the Butterflies</em>

    No full text
This essay examines two novels by Dominican American author Julia Alvarez, How the García Girls Lost Their Accents and In the Time of the Butterflies. By undertaking a transnational feminist reading practice, the author explicates the novels’ critique of the political constructions of the Latin American Third World as “deprived” and “depraved.” Alvarez’s work traces how these representations have been constitutive of a North American liberal feminist imaginary, limiting its conception of the forms of feminist agency available to women in the Americas as well as the liberal social rebellion and “development” of the woman of color in the United States. Ultimately, the two novels uncover the imperial history between the United States and the Dominican Republic that (neo)liberal linkages otherwise obscure.</p

Clinical and Echocardiographic Correlates of Left Atrial Function Index: The Framingham Offspring Study

Full author list omitted for brevity. For the full list of authors, see article.BACKGROUND: Left atrial (LA) remodeling is a predictor of cardiovascular disease (CVD). We performed measurement of the LA function index (LAFI), a composite measure of LA structure and function, in a community-based cohort and here report the distribution and cross-sectional correlates of LAFI. METHODS: In 1,719 Framingham Offspring Study participants (54% women, mean age 66 +/- 9 years), we derived LAFI from the LA emptying fraction, left ventricular (LV) outflow tract velocity time integral, and indexed maximal LA volume. We used multivariable linear regression to assess the clinical and echocardiographic correlates of LAFI adjusting for age, sex, anthropometric measurements, and CVD risk factors. RESULTS: The average LAFI was 35.2 +/- 12.1. Overall, LAFI declined with advancing age (beta = -0.27, P < .001). LAFI was significantly higher (37.5 +/- 11.6) in a subgroup of participants free of CVD and CVD risk factors compared with those with either of these conditions (34.5 +/- 12.2). In multivariable models, LAFI was inversely related to antihypertensive use (beta = -1.26, P = .038), prevalent atrial fibrillation (beta = -4.46, P = .001), heart failure (beta = -5.86, P = .008), and coronary artery disease (beta = -2.01, P = .046). In models adjusting for echocardiographic variables, LAFI was directly related to LV ejection fraction (beta = 14.84, P < .001) and inversely related to LV volume (beta = -7.03, P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: LAFI was inversely associated with antihypertensive use and prevalent CVD and was related to established echocardiographic traits of LV remodeling. Our results offer normative ranges for LAFI in a white community-based sample and suggest that LAFI represents a marker of pathological atrial remodeling

Impact of irrigation and fertilizers on the growth of output in Andhra Pradesh: A Bayesian approach

    No full text
Concerns estimation of 'production functions' for regions (e.g., a State) when time-series data on outputs and inputs are available for sub-regions (e.g., districts). An approach is proposed and applied which is an alternative to working with aggregate regional data and which derives regional functions from estimates for sub-regions. Not only is the resulting relationship meaningful as a description of the regional input-output relationship but it also has certain attractive statistical properties based on optimal extraction of information from the sub-regional functions. Proceeding on the assumption that statistical macro production functions have some use, a Cobb-Douglas type specification for four major crops (rice, sugarcane, groundnuts and tobacco) of the State of Andhra Pradesh in India is estimated. The available data restrict the analysis to only four inputs: irrigated and unirrigated land, fertilizers and rainfall. -from Author

Triple mesh technique in repair of recurrent lumbar incisional hernia

    No full text
Lumbar hernias occur infrequently and can be congenital, primary (inferior or Petit type, and superior or Grynfeltt type), post-traumatic, or incisional. They are bounded by the 12th rib, the iliac crest, the erector spinae, and the external oblique muscle. Most postoperative incisional hernias occur in nephrectomy or aortic aneurysm repair incisions for which various surgical method in context of meshplasty are available. In this case 60 yr. male hypertensive patient presented to the outpatient clinic of institute with recurrent left side lumbar incisional hernia, patient was previously operated for left side nephrolithiasis 15 years back and onlay meshplasty 2 years back for incisional hernia. The patient was operated under high risk for recurrent incisional hernia repair by triple layered meshplasties in the same sitting. Lumbar incisional hernias are often diffuse with fascial defects that are usually hard to appreciate. Computed tomography scan is the diagnostic modality of choice with adjuvant clinical findings, which allows differentiating them from abdominal wall musculature denervation atrophy complicating flank incisions. Repairing these hernias is difficult due to the surrounding structures for which our surgical approach included a triple mesh repair consisting of underlay, inlay and onlay meshplasty thereby anticipating further such incidences of incisional hernia
