The impact of regulatory business environment on SME's funding choices in developing countries - evidence from Africa
Full text linkWhile it is known that some elements of the business environment (BE), such as macroeconomic conditions, impact access to finance and the funding choices of SMEs, very little is known whether other elements of the BE – such as the institutional setting and the regulatory business environment (RBE) – influence access to (or supply of) finance and the funding choices of SMEs. Using a World Bank Enterprise Surveys panel sample (2003-2020) from 30 African countries and employing Propensity Score Matching (PSM) methods, it is noted that while an enabling institutional setting and RBE in Africa increases access to external finance for SMEs, SMEs still opt for retained earnings over funding from banking and non-banking financial institutions for their working capital. This funding behaviour can be explained by that SMEs located in enabling RBEs have increased productivity and financial performance and so can employ larger amounts of retained earnings for their operations. Furthermore, even though more accessible in enabling RBEs, external finance remains unaffordable for most SMEs in Africa. These findings indicate the need to tailor interventions to make varied finance more accessible and affordable for SMEs in developing countries

No full textLa idea de esta investigación es realizar un estudio que profundice las principales modalidades de eslabonamiento de la cadena cuero/calzado, respecto de la posibilidad de contribuir a la constitución de una cadena altamente productiva y generadora de valor agregado, ingreso, empleo y divisas para la población y el país en su conjunto. El objetivo principal de la investigación es analizar el problema de la escasa generación de valor agregado, que parece vinculado al bajo aprovechamiento de una materia prima que es potencialmente rica en el suelo nacional: el cuero del ganado. Por tanto, el estudio se enfoca en entender qué es lo que está provocando tal dificultad, qué efectos se han generado, y cómo se pueden solucionar los problemas existentes. A nivel más específico, se quieren lograr varios resultados, entre ellos la identificación de las cadenas existentes en la rama cuero/calzado, el análisis y la comparación de la eficiencia económica y social de las cadenas existentes en sentido amplio, la identificación de la tipología de empresas vinculadas a tales cadenas, y, finalmente, la identificación de las condiciones que pueden permitir recompactar la rama cuero/calzado

Buscamos una solución radical para romper el enraizado conformismo ante el subdesarrollo de nuestra pequeña industria. Se identifican dos problemas fundamentales: la organización todavía artesanal de la pequeña industria que solo produce pequeñas cantidades de baja calidad/precio para el mercado local; y el mercado interno, aún muy cerrado. La solución parece ser la conversión de la actual competencia hacia adentro, en la cual los productores producen para el mismo pequeño mercado local, en una competencia hacia fuera, en la cual los empresarios se unen y buscan nuevos mercados en el exterior, donde hay mayores precios y una demanda potencial

No full textEste estudio evidencia los rasgos de un sector productivo que hasta la fecha ha sido sustancialmente descuidado por las políticas económicas de los últimos gobiernos y que tiene un potencial importante para el desarrollo del país, vinculado como es con algunas ventajas comparativas del país: madera preciosa, tradición artesanal y mano de obra barata. Además, los niveles de baja conectividad y desarrollo de la industria mublera nacional. Sin embargo, tal evaluación no busca desincentivar el fomento del sector , sino representar una visión objetiva de los alcances actuales y de la necesidad de dar un salto competitivo hacia una organización económica más moderna de la pequeña industria que la dirija hacia una mejor inserción en el nuevo mercado globalizado. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
