Vibrating inertial sensors : digital architecture and calibration

    No full text
High Q-factor quartz piezoelectric resonators are designed at ONERA, and used to build inertial sensors. The vibrating beam accelerometer is made by a proof mass which induces a resonant frequency variation of the beam when an acceleration occurs. The tuning-fork vibrating gyroscope involves two perpendicular resonant modes which exchange energy each other by Coriolis effect. Analytic calculations and approximations made from high Q-factor hypothesis bring to resonators response modeling to sinusoidal excitation. Controlloops on frequency, phase an amplitude give access to information about the evolution of the vibrating cell physical characteristics, from which sensor calibration is possible. The sensor is composed by the piezoelectric cell under vacuum, an analog interface, digital electronics on FPGA and an on-board computer. Digital operations, as the excitation signal generation and response measurement by demodulation, without ADC or DAC converters, are implemented in VHDL and in C. The inertial instrument architecture is a generic design non dependent on specific components. The FPGA chip is connected to the onboard computer which drives and computes data provided by the resonator. Performances are obtained by analyzing noise levels, sensor scale factor and bias according to thermal conditions, measuring scale and bandwidth

Within the framework of this PhD we present the design and realization of a bench dedicated to the study of the reliability of piezoelectric structures and more precisely micro-devices of energy harvesting for the new generation of active and autonomous medical implants. The structures studied are in the form of a free-clamped piezoelectric bimorph having a seismic mass at their tip. A good understanding of the aging of the materials and of the mechanical and electrical failure modes is essential for this type of system where the life of the patient implanted by this device is directly involved. To study the reliability and durability of the active part of the harvester, we propose to establish a new accelerated aging methodology via a dedicated test bench where the environment and stimuli can be controlled accurately over a large period of time. An electromechanical characterization of the structures is periodically carried out by the extraction of a series of indicators (blocking force, stiffness, tension in harmonic regime) within the bench throughout the aging process. Therefore it is possible to identify the different potential failure modes and to study their impact on the proper functioning of the system

Two-phase capillary loops are known as efficient cooling devices for electronic equipment. However, they meet limitations when employed in harsh military environments, due to the wide temperature range and acceleration of the applications. One way of adapting such systems to this field of application is to assist capillary pumping with an active pumping mechanism. Electro Hydro Dynamic forces demonstrated interesting capacity of draining for dielectric fluids, providing promising solutions in terms of pumping, reliability and compatibility with targeted environments.During this thesis, works were performed for a better understanding of physical phenomena involved in such pumping systems. Integration of EHD pumps in a two-phase loop at microsystem scale was the main goal. The first part of the study is focusing on the conception and characterization of EHD pumping devices. The second part concerns the development of a micro-scaled two-phase capillary loop assisted by an active EHD part and its thermal characterization. Aside from these results, these new technologies were transposed from component level to PCB level

Nowadays, micro and nano systems fabrication technologies should allow the integration of any passive or active materials (magnetic, piezoelectric, polymers, etc.) in various forms (films, micro/nanostructures, etc.) to build and/or package highly integrated multi-functional systems. A generic technology able to solve incompatibility issues related to the mixing of different technologies is pattern or device transfer by wafer bonding from a donor wafer to the target substrate. Ideally, such a process should be versatile, low cost, selective and over all should involve minimum interaction and processing steps on the target wafer. From this perspective, a low cost and low temperature MEMS transfer process has been developed. The process is based on adhesion control of molded electroplated Ni microstructures on the donor wafer by using plasma deposited fluorocarbon films and sputtered carbon films (for high temperature materials). Adhesive bonding of the microstructures on the target wafer using BCB sealing enables mechanical tearing off from the donor wafer. This proposed process has allowed us to realize various Ni patterns on Si, Pyrex glass wafers and Kapton foils. Furthermore, BCB sealing leads to freestanding microstructures which are thermally and electrically isolated from the target substrate. Thanks to multiple transfers, Ni stacked microstructures have been achieved. The transfer of various materials has been demonstrated for simple and complex structures. This transfer process is very promising for numerous applications and brings new perspectives towards 3D microfabrication and heterogeneous integration of MEMS/NEMS

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
