Alexander Hamilton and Asian Capitalism
Alexander Hamilton (1755-1804), extensive essayist (including The Federalist), long-serving aide de camp to George Washington (1732-1799), the first Secretary to the Treasury (1789-1795), and author of a series of Reports to Congress, takes his rightful place as one of theUnited States ofAmerica’s founding fathers. Like all members of Washington administrations (1789-1797), Hamilton on taking office was acutely aware of the highly precarious nature of the new nation’s future. What was to replace British rule was far fromcertain, and at the time the construction of a functioning republic beyond a small geographical area was considered by political orthodoxy to be dubious. In the economic and strategic realms,Hamilton immediately recognised that Britains defeat in theWar of Independence (1775-1783) in no way signalled the decline of the British Empire. Indeed the opposite was the case, with the British re-energised in their efforts to secure and expand their economic and strategic interests globally, including within the North American continent (Canada and the West). Hamilton, under the political protection of Washington, was to fully utilise his renowned intellectual vigour, his extensive practical knowledge gained from the War of Independence and his encyclopedic knowledge of fiscal affairs, to forge much needed fiscal, legal and strategic institutions for the new nation. Institutions that have proven capable of enduring the test of time and varying circumstances to ensure the United States of America’s continued security and prosperity (throughout the remainder of this study simply referred to as the United States or U.S.). Hamilton’s name will forever be associated with fighting for the United States’ birth and then securing its political, economic and strategic sovereignty. This crucial work and legacy resonated further abroad beyond the United States by providing substantive answers to governance challenges faced by other leaders, of other nations, in other times. Hamilton’s legacy to East Asian development, through both direct and indirect readings of his works by Asian leaders and through direct adaptation of the ‘the American system’ of commerce, trade and industry, is the focal point of this study
Pengaruh Citra Perusahaan, Kualitas Pelayanan, dan Word of Mouth Terhadap Minat Menggunakan JNE Sebagai Jasa Pengiriman
This research aims to evaluate how company image, service quality, and word of mouth influence customer decisions in choosing JNE delivery services at the Medan branch. Purchase intention, in this context, refers to the desire to use the service. The research used quantitative methods with Ordinary Least Square (OLS) and involved primary and secondary data from 100 respondents selected by chance. Analysis was carried out using SPSS 23. Based on the description of the respondent profiles, there were 38 men (38%) and 62 women (62%). In terms of age, there were 11 respondents under 20 years of age, while the 20-25 year age group was the largest with 45 people. The 26-30 year age group consists of 30 people, and those aged over 30 years consist of 14 people. The main occupation of respondents who use JNE Medan Marelan Branch services is dominated by 40 employees, followed by 30 students, 11 self-employed people, and 19 others (including those who have not worked, not working, domestic workers) of the total number of respondents, 65 people have used JNE Medan Marelan services more than 5 times, while 35 people have used these services less than 5 times. Findings show that individual company image does not have a significant effect on intention to use, while service quality and word of mouth has a significant positive influence. Overall, these three factors have a significant impact on interest in using services. The Adjusted R Square value is 0.517, indicating that 51.7% of interest in using JNE is influenced by these three variables, while 48.3% is influenced by other factors not studied
Validation of Large Area Capacitive Sensors for Impact Damage Assessment
Impacts in fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composites can severely inhibit their functionality and prematurely lead to the composite’s failure. This research focuses on determining the efficacy of a novel capacitive sensor, termed as the Soft Elastomeric Capacitor or SEC, to monitor the magnitude of out-of-plane deformations in composites. This work forwards the development of a sensing skin that can be used as an in situ monitoring tool for composites. The capacitive sensor can be made to arbitrary sizes and geometries. The sensor is composed of an elastomer composite that measures strains experienced by the material it is bonded to. The structure of the sensor, fabricated to function as a parallel plate capacitor, responds to impacts by transducing strains into a measurable change in capacitance. In this work, the SECs are deployed on randomly oriented fiberglass-reinforced plates with a polyester resin matrix. The material is impacted at various energy levels until the monitored
composite material reaches its yielding point. The behavior of the sensor in impact detection applications below the proof resilience shows little to no change in the capacitance of the sensor. As the impacts surpass this yielding point, the sensor responds linearly with induced change in the area. The sensor performed within the expectations of the proposed model and demonstrated the efficacy of the proposed large-area sensor as a damage quantification tool in the structural health monitoring of composites. This is an accepted manuscript of an article published as Vereen, Alexander Brennan, Austin Downey, Subramani Sockalingam, and Simon Laflamme. The life and works of James Miller, 1704-1744, with particular reference to the satiric content of his poetry and plays.
PhDJames Miller was born the son of a Dorset rector in 1704. He
was himself ordained, but acquired no benefice until just before his
early death, probably because of a scathing portrayal of the Bishop
of London in one of his verse satires. At Oxford he wrote a vivacious
comedy of humours, set in the University. Its production in 1730
began his dramatic career, at a time when the number of London
theatres had just doubled, and new dramatic forms were being invented.
In 1731 his poem Harlequin-Horace, a witty inversion of
the Ars Poetica, attacked pantomime and opera, but also painted a
lively portrait of the entire theatrical world, in the tradition of
the Dunciad.
After collaborating in a translation of Moliere's works Miller
wrote two plays based on this author. Of all his dramatic works
these were the most successful with his contemporaries, and were
followed by a modernisation of Much Ado, and a ballad-opera adapted
from an afterpiece by Jean-Baptiste Rousseau, and rendered highly
topical. Miller made similar use of a recent French comedy showing
a Red Indian's reactions to civilisation, a satiric "fable" by Walsh
and Voltaire's Mahomet. A large quantity of original material was
incorporated into most of these, and this is generally satirical in
nature. The Indian is made to voice almost egalitarian sentiments.
An afterpiece, "The Camp Visitants", satirised military inaction
in the war, and was apparently banned. The manuscripts of the six
plays produced after the Licensing Act bear the examiner's deletions,
and illustrate the nature of the censorship at this time.
Miller's greatest strength is probably his flexible, vigorously
colloquial dialogue. His political satire is mostly contained in
the poetry, which attacks Walpole's administration with increasing
vehemence through the seventeen-thirties, until its fall. In 1740
two poems that used Pope in symbolic contrast to Walpole caused a
sensation. In both poetry and plays Miller is also a social satirist,
who lays unusually strong emphasis on false taste and the deterioration
of culture
The 'true use of reading' : Sarah Fielding and mid eighteenth-century literary strategies.
PhDThe aim of this thesis is to explore, by examining her life and
works, how Sarah Fielding (1710-68) established her identity as an author.
The definition of her role involves her notions of the functions of
writing and reading.
Sarah Fielding attempts to invite readers to form a sense of ties
by tacit understanding of her messages. As she believes that a work
of literature is produced through collaboration between the writer and
the reader, it is an important task in her view to show her attentiveness
toward reading practice. In her consideration of reading, she has two
distinct, even opposite views of her audience: on the one hand a familiar
and limited circle of readers with shared moral and cultural values and
on the other potential readers among the unknown mass of people. The
dual targets direct her to devise various strategies. She tries to
appeal to those who can endorse and appreciate her moral values as well
as her learning. Her writings and letters testify that she is sensitive
to the demands of the literary market, trying to lead the taste of readers
by inventing new forms.
The thesis opens with an overview of Sarah Fielding's career,
followed by a consideration of her critical attention to the roles of
reading. I go on to examine the narrative structures and strategies
she deploys, with a particular emphasis on her use of the epistolary
method. The following chapter deals with her attention to the reading
of the moral message tangibly embodied in her educational writing. It
is followed by an analysis of the activity which earned her a reputation
as a learned woman. Various as the forms of her works are, they invariably
reflect her attempt to balance herself between the two demands of
inventiveness and familiarity

The sense of a beginning : Bakhtinian dialogic criticism on 'the gospel' in Mark.
Contemporary literary approaches have caused paradigm shifts in Biblical Studies in the last two decades as it appears in a great deal of Markan studies using narrative, reader-response, deconstructive, feminist, and new historicist approaches. However, literary studies on the Gospel of Mark have not taken into account theoretical questions underlying those approaches. As a result biblical critics are driven by new trends without ever having a chance to examine the critical baggage of the approaches. Consequently, there is a gap of communication between the old and the new one. Therefore this thesis is an attempt to meet the need of enhancing the quality of critical endeavour in biblical studies. In the light of most recent competing critical theories of literature, the first contribution of this thesis is the methodological finding that Bakhtinian dialogic criticism contains the most profound philosophical and practical foundations for solving some crucial theoretical problems in contemporary literary theories. It is a critique to a Saussurian linguistic system of language which becomes the very foundation of modern and postmodern literary criticism. Bakhtinian literary theory shifts the foundation of literary criticism on linguistic signs into the creative activity of the socio-cultural production of human communication. The shift into socio-cultural reality of language communication makes the notion of 'genre' very important to unlock the problem of text and context in literary studies. Since the Gospel of Mark has fascinated most literary critics in Biblical Studies, the problem of 'genre' of this gospel is chosen as the focus of this study. Secondly, as no agreement is reached as to what 'genre' the Gospel of Mark belongs, this thesis makes its contribution to the discussion by locating the problem of 'genre' of Mark in the context of genre theories and argues that the Bakhtinian suggestion to find genre in the socio-cultural sphere by analysing artistic intercourse between narrative agents in Mark has freed the competing analysis from the unresolved problem between the kerygmatic (content oriented) approach and the analogical (form oriented) approach. To achieve finding 'genre' in the socio-cultural sphere, this thesis focuses on Bakhtinian analysis of the process of artistic intercourse between narrative agents. The narrative communicative interrelationships between narrative agents is constructed in this thesis as a 'stereophonic' Bakhtinian model of dialogic communication. This model is an original contribution of this thesis for revising the traditional two dimensional model of narrative communication. Based on this dialogical model of communication, a special role is given to the Bakhtinian 'author-creator' in the realization process of genre through the interaction of polyphonic voices. Through the interaction of voices of the author-artist and the hero we are led to discover a relatively stable type of portraying and controlling reality in Mark, known as the genre of Roman 'satire'. The closest literary affinity is Satyrica by Petronius. This narrative strategy of 'satire' in Mark has its root in the prophetic discourse of the Old Testament which is saturating the speech of the narrator, John the Immerser, the centurion, the people, and even Jesus. Finally, the whole search for Markan 'genre' culminates in the analysis of the realization of genre through the analysis of Bakhtinian chronotope. The reality of the genre of Mark is its social reality that is in its role as dpxrj/ 'beginning'. As the Gospel of Mark proclaims itself as 'a beginning', it defines its claim of socio-cultural 'authority' in early Christianity. It is this 'sense of beginning' which enables the narrating and the narrated world of Mark to interact dialogically
