    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Germination and Early Seedling Growth of High Andean Native Plants under Heavy Metal Stress

    The development of large-scale mining activity along the Central Andes of Argentina (CAA) has generated significant amounts of waste materials containing heavy metals. Phytoremediation is a promising eco-friendly, low-cost, and effective technology for the removal of heavy metals. The present study aimed to identify two native dominant species from the CCA, Adesmia subterranea and A. pinifolia, as metal-tolerant plant species for the first time, by evaluating the germination and early seedling growth at different concentrations (ppm) of Cd (3, 4.5 and 6), Ni (150, 225 and 300), As (20, 30 and 40), and Hg (0.8, 1.2 and 1.6) Early seedling growth was found to be more sensitive to heavy metals than germination. Ni and As exhibited the greatest inhibitory effect on both species’ germination percentages. In contrast, with Cd and Hg, no inhibitory effect was recorded. Root length, metal tolerance index, and fresh and dry weight were stimulated with Hg. However, the phytotoxic effect was greater as the concentration of Ni, As, and Cd increased. As an overall conclusion, the order of toxicity for these species can be classified as Ni > As > Cd > Hg. Therefore, Adesmia species could be considered as candidates for phytoremediation of soils contaminated with Hg and low concentrations of Cd.Dirección NacionalFil: Parera, Victoria.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Efecto del estrés por frío a nivel celular, foliar y capacidad de rebrote en tres cultivares de Cenchrus ciliaris L. : Americana, Biloela and Texas 4464

    Buffelgrass (Cenchrus ciliaris L.) a native pasture species of Africa is widely used in arid regions because of its forage productivity and quality. It could become serious invasive species, not only for crops but also in natural vegetation. Buffelgrass is highly affected by low temperatures at all stages of its life cycle. The objective was to determine the behavior of three buffelgrass cultivars (Americana, Biloela, Texas 4464) under cold stress and define the critical temperatures. To determine the effect of cold stress on the plasma membrane, foliage damage and survival (regrowth), it was evaluated relative electrical conductivity (ECr) of leaves, percentage of foliar damage and the ability of regrowth after exposure to 2 temperatures (-5°C and -10°C) with 2 exposure times (4 and 7 hours). The results showed a higher percentage of foliar damage and greater ECr as temperature decreased and hours of exposure increased. A similar response was observed when survival (regrowth) was evaluated. There were no significant differences among cultivars in both temperature treatments and time when the regrowth was evaluated.El buffelgrass (Cenchrus ciliaris L.) es una especie forrajera nativa de África ampliamente utilizada en las regiones áridas debido a su productividad forrajera y calidad. En muchos casos puede convertirse en una especie invasora, no solo para los cultivos, sino también para la vegetación natural. El buffelgrass es afectado por las bajas temperaturas en todas las etapas del ciclo de vida. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue determinar el comportamiento de tres variedades de buffelgrass (Americana, Biloela, Texas 4464) ante condiciones de frío y definir las temperaturas críticas. Para determinar el efecto de estrés por bajas temperaturas sobre la membrana plasmática, daños de follaje y la supervivencia (rebrote), se evaluó la conductividad relativa (ECr) de hojas, porcentaje de daño foliar y la capacidad de rebrote después de la exposición de las plantas y plántulas a 2 temperaturas (-5°C y -10°C) durante 2 períodos (4 y 7 horas). Los resultados mostraron un mayor porcentaje de daño foliar y mayor conductividad relativa. Medida que disminuía la temperatura y aumentaba las horas de exposición. Una respuesta similar se observó cuando se evaluó la supervivencia (rebrote). No hubo diferencias significativas entre cultivares en ambos tratamientos de temperatura y tiempo cuando se evaluó el rebrote.Fil: Parera, Victoria.     Evolución de la conservación en la provincia de Mendoza. Desafíos en el proceso de ordenamiento territorial en tierras secas

    La provincia de Mendoza presenta un marco geográfico caracterizado por una significativa aridez y una fragilidad ambiental, donde sus ecosistemas se encuentran afectados por procesos de desertificación. Es por ello que diferentes estrategias de conservación de los recursos naturales han sido implementadas desde la segunda mitad del siglo XX a la actualidad, sustentadas en diferentes posturas producto del contexto sociopolítico de cada período. El objetivo consiste en identificar y caracterizar la evolución de las estrategias de conservación de los recursos naturales implementadas en la provincia, y evaluar la articulación entre las mismas y su vinculación con la implementación de la Ley de Ordenamiento Territorial y Usos del Suelo. Para el análisis se realizó una revisión crítica de la literatura referida a la materia y una consulta de los instrumentos legales que constituyen el marco normativo de la conservación; posteriormente se confeccionaron y correlacionaron una serie de cartas temáticas referidas al tema. La articulación entre el Sistema Provincial de Áreas Naturales Protegidas, los Bosques Nativos Protegidos y los Humedales Ramsar, permite proteger legalmente el 28% del territorio de Mendoza, presentándose importantes desafíos en relación a la gestión efectiva de sus recursos y al ordenamiento de un territorio definido por la aridez.The Mendoza province presents a geographical context characterized by a significant aridity and environmental fragility, where its ecosystems are affected by desertification processes. Therefore different strategies for the conservation of natural resources have been implemented since the mid-twentieth century to the present supported in different postures product of socio-political context of each period. The objective of this work is to identify and characterize the evolution of strategies of conservation of the natural resources implemented in the province, and to evaluated the articulation established between them and their link with the implementation with the “Territory Planning and Land Use Law“. A critical review was conducted and a consultation of legal instruments that constitute the normative framework of conservation was done, later a set of maps were made and correlated. The articulation between the “Mendoza´s reserve networks, the protected native forest and Ramsar wetlands” allows legally protect the 28% of Mendoza´s territory, showing important challenges in relation to the effective management of its natural resources and territory planning defined by aridity.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
