    This interview is included in the American Folklore Society Oral History Project held at the Archive of Folk Culture, American Folklife Center, Library of Congress, Washington, D.C. Oral history interview with Américo Paredes conducted by Francis A. de Caro and Rosan A. Jordan in Austin, Texas, in 1974 for the American Folklore Society Oral History Project. Américo Paredes, folklorist, poet, educator, and activist for Mexican American studies, was born in Brownsville, Texas on September 3,1915 and died on May 5, 1999. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. in English and folklore studies at the University of Texas in Austin, where he spent his distinguished academic career. In 1967 he helped found the Center for Intercultural Studies in Folklore and Ethnomusicology, and in 1970, the Center for Mexican American Studies at the University of Texas, Austin.     Resistência ao fogo de paredes de alvenaria estrutural de blocos cerâmicos pelo critério de isolamento térmico

Programa de Pós-graduação em Engenharia Civil, Florianópolis, 2011No presente trabalho, foi desenvolvido um estudo sobre a resistência ao fogo de paredes de alvenaria estrutural construídas com blocos cerâmicos, por meio de métodos experimentais e analítico-numéricos, considerando-se apenas o critério de isolamento térmico. Na parte experimental, foram realizados ensaios segundo a NBR 5628 para a determinação da resistência ao fogo, que consistiram na construção de 4 corpos de prova não carregados com dimensões de 2,70 m 2,60 m, utilizando blocos cerâmicos de dimensões 14 cm 19 cm 29 cm e resistência mecânica à compressão de 9 N/mm2, alternando a presença de revestimentos de argamassa e o preenchimento dos vazados com areia, com a aplicação de aquecimento controlado em uma das faces. Na parte analítica-numérica, foram utilizados 2 métodos para a determinação da resistência ao fogo: o método analítico do Brick Industry Association, baseado na espessura equivalente da parede, e o método dos elementos finitos, com o auxílio do programa CAST3M, utilizando um modelo calibrado, desprezando-se a convecção e radiação no interior dos vazados dos blocos. As paredes sem revestimento e sem preenchimento nos vazados apresentaram resistência ao fogo de 106 minutos. Com a aplicação de revestimentos de argamassa nas faces da parede, obteve-se aumento de 80% na resistência ao fogo, e, com o preenchimento com areia nos vazados principais dos blocos, o acréscimo verificado foi de 100%. Os resultados obtidos nos ensaios comprovaram o bom desempenho ao fogo das paredes de alvenaria com blocos cerâmicos. Também mostraram que o emprego de revestimentos nas faces e o preenchimento dos vazados representam boas alternativas para aumentar a resistência ao fogo, a um custo relativamente baixo. O método de cálculo do Brick Industry Association apresentou valores 25% inferiores aos resultados experimentais. No entanto, devido à sua simplicidade, o método mostrou-se adequado para uma estimativa da resistência ao fogo de uma parede. Já o método de elementos finitos conseguiu reproduzir a transferência de calor através das paredes, mediante a calibração de um modelo, o qual forneceu resultados muito próximos aos experimentais, mostrando ser uma boa alternativa em substituição aos ensaios
