Impact of improved host resistance on worm control in Merinos - a computer simulation study

    No full text
The WW model has been used to examine the epidemiological consequences of having a flock of resistant lambs as a result of either selective breeding or vaccination. However, these simulations started with "resistant" sheep rather than simulating the gradual change in immune response that would occur over a number of years in a breeding program

    Scottish ferry policy

    No full text
The purpose of this paper is to review the evolution of Scottish policy for the provision of ferry services 1999-2009, a period broadly coinciding with the life of the re-established Scottish parliament. We shall argue that, despite clear and consistent warnings by this author and others, the government failed to put in place measures and safeguards that were regarded as standard practice for such an industry providing essential services

Paras - A Private NFT Protocol

    No full text
Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are a blockchain application that has recently witnessed significant success. However, NFT marketplaces are majorly built on popular blockchain platforms that do not provide privacy tools. As a result, NFTs are easily visible to everyone. This has naturally given rise to various issues, including stolen/duplicate NFTs and attacks like shill trading. Furthermore, this architecture fails to reflect the real-life privacy notion as it digitizes unique physical goods. In this project, we build Paras - a blockchain-agnostic protocol that offers privacy to NFTs. Specifically, one may hide the real NFTs and only display a reference to them on marketplaces, hide seller and bidder identities, hide bid values and user wallet balances. Paras is based on cryptographic primitives, such as, threshold encryption and robust secret sharing. It does not rely on any trusted execution environments for security, unlike some existing protocols in this direction

Paras: interactive parameter space exploration for association rule mining

    No full text
ABSTRACT We demonstrate our PARAS technology for supporting interactive association mining at near real-time speeds. Key technical innovations of PARAS, in particular, stable region abstractions and rule redundancy management supporting novel parameter space-centric exploratory queries will be showcased. The audience will be able to interactively explore the parameter space view of rules. They will experience near real-time speeds achieved by PARAS for operations, such as comparing rulesets mined using different parameter values, that would otherwise take hours of computation and much manual investigation. Overall, we will demonstrate that the PARAS system provides a rich experience to data analysts while significantly reducing the trial-and-error interactions

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Design and Synthesis of Novel Antimycobacterial FadD32 Inhibitors With Improved Drug Properties

Tuberculosis (TB) is a top killer infectious disease worldwide, caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tb). Despite several efforts in finding new effective treatment options, TB remains a public threat. Moreover, drug-resistant TB and the HIV pandemic makes treatment options more challenging. The COVID-19 pandemic is predicted to exacerbate the situation. TB treatment consists of multidrug regimens for a lengthy duration of time and elicit various toxicities. Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are environmental pathogens found in soil, dust, biofilms, and water resources which targets immunocompromised patients or those with underlying structural lung diseases. Current therapy of NTM infections include commonly used clinical antibiotics, which are already resistant to bacteria. Therefore, newer agents which are selective against mycobacteria are required to treat tuberculosis. FadD32 is a fatty-acyl AMP ligase which activates and transfers fatty acids in the process of mycolic acids biosynthesis. FadD32 is a putative drug target as its blockage inhibits the growth of mycobacteria. Inhibition of FadD32 function through coumarin derivatives showed to be effective against drug-susceptible and drug-resistant TB, as well as on slow-growing NTM species. However, this class of agents undergo rapid metabolism in mouse liver microsomes likely leading to short half-lives in vivo. We employed scaffold hopping methodologies to replace the metabolically labile coumarin core with a 2-quinolone core. The 2-quinolone series achieved high antimycobacterial activity, with a lead compound 250 eliciting a MIC value of 0.5 µg/mL against M. tb. Moreover, our lead compound 250 exhibited inhibitory activity against rapid-growing NTM species (M. abscessus MIC = 8 µg/mL) whereas the coumarin class was inactive. Furthermore, compound 250 achieved 27-fold aqueous solubility and 2-fold improved metabolic stability than the lead coumarin derivative. Thus, further pharmacokinetic and biochemical studies on the 2-quinolone class, particularly compound 250, are warranted.ProQuest Traditional Publishing Optio

    Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    No full text
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
