On mystic nature of science: a conversation with French Muslim scientist Dr. Bruno Abd al Haqq Guiderdoni
A French convert to Islam, Dr Bruno is an astrophysicist and specialist in galaxy formation and evolution. He has also been listed in the top 500 influential Muslims in the world. Having published more than 140 papers and organised several conferences on science subjects, Bruno also serves as Director of the Observatory of Lyon. Besides, he has published more than 60 papers, specifically on Islamic theology and mysticism. Serving now as the Director of the Islamic Institute for Advanced Studies, he has been organizing many interfaith dialogues and conferences worldwide and conducting various television programs on the area. Dr. Bruno was kind enough to spend some time with me when he visited the International Institute for Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC) at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in November 2013. During his insightful conversation, he talked about various aspects of science, Islamic sciences, ethics, mystic nature of science, contemplation in light of Qur’an, scientific presentation of religion, and the language of science. Its Malayalam translation was published in Thelitcham Monthly in 2014. Still, it is the apt time to publish this original English version while the negative vibes are spreading from Bruno’s native country, France. No doubt, his words are still as relevant as when he talked seven years ago
Islamic eschatological discourses: comparing between the conceptions of Badiuzzaman and Al-Attas
The present paper aims to portray a metaphysical and theological understanding of the
Islamic eschatology, comparing between two contemporary scholars, Badiuzzaman Said Nursi and alAttas. Through library research and content analysis, this paper looks deeply into the views and
explanations made by the two versatile scholars regarding Islamic eschatology. Initially, the paper
introduces the concept of eschatology in The Words of Badiuzzaman, followed by the explanation by
al-Attas referring to his works including Prolegomena to Metaphysics of Islam: An Exposition of the
Fundamental Elements of the Worldview of Islam, The Meaning and Experience of Happiness in Islam,
and Islam and Secularism. After presenting the two scholastic narrations, they are compared looking
to their content, articulative methodologies, and linguistic aspects. The meticulous analysis showed
that in the works of both, the conceptions and terminologies related to the end of this world and
beginning of an unending other world have been discussed, whereas it is extensive in Badiuzzaman’s
contentions. Also, despite of the theological similarities in their corpus, they differ in the mentioned
aspects to a great extent. This understanding would contribute to the body of knowledge as well as the
pedagogical approaches one should adopt towards eschatology as a subject
Enrolling into a humaniversity and understanding the meaning of education
During an interview session, one of the questions posed to me by the panelist was something related to the current scenario of university education. Specifically, the question came in the form of this statement: ‘It has been said that universities should not be degree mills but centres of knowledge dissemination and creativity.' Give us your take on that. Here I have expanded the ideas on which my response went on as follows
