Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Property, protection and development of environmental goods
Our national legal framework, at the level of ordinary legislation, is characterized by its timelessness but also by the fragmented approach it takes to issues of ownership, protection, and management of environmental goods. These issues have been of concern to the legal order since the early period of national legislation, but always through specific legislative acts (e.g., forest legislation, coastal zone legislation, archaeological legislation). These acts establish a framework of public law for the preservation and general management of each environmental element while simultaneously introducing specific property law rules that align with the application of this framework.Alongside the public law provisions of these specialized environmental laws, the most significant elements of the natural and cultural environment are subject to the property law provisions of Articles 966 et seq. of the Civil Code. These provisions constitute a significant parameter of their legal status as they pertain to ownership, use, and the potential for disposal and economic exploitation. This dual approach to issues of ownership, protection, and management of environmental elements—through the coexistence of public law rules and property law rules—continues to characterize national legislation till today.Consequently, the national legal order faces the challenge of systematizing, coordinating, and potentially unifying the various legal frameworks for the protection of environmental goods by establishing a unified set of public law rules. This framework would primarily address public properties, which encompass the most significant categories of environmental goods. Achieving this goal requires a systematic analysis and classification of the fragmented and case-specific regulations currently in force, considering their ownership regime. This analysis should combine the applicable rules of public and civil law with the aim of evaluating the role of ownership as a factor in the protection and utilization of environmental goods today, diagnosing existing obstacles, and proposing measures to enhance and improve this role. These measures should benefit the environment itself and its users, as well as the private interests of property owners. For this purpose, since the protection and utilization of environmental goods constitute, as derived from the Constitution, a common conceptual field of the right to property and the right to the environment, the relationship between ownership and the protection and utilization of environmental goods is explored. This exploration is conducted from both the perspective of environmental law and property law. This PhD dissertation examines the influence of the goal of environmental protection on the individual rights of property owners and, conversely, the influence of property rights on the effective protection and utilization of environmental goods. The main research issues of this PhD include the systematic study of the ownership regime of environmental goods and their classification according to their property status; the determination of common conceptual elements and rules related to the ownership of environmental goods; the need to recognize a distinct concept and legal regime for the ownership of environmental goods; the definition of the content of concepts such as common use, benefit, and enjoyment of environmental goods in relation to their ownership status; the interaction between the public law framework governing environmental goods and the private law rules related to their ownership; and the identification of specific rules associated with the ownership of individual environmental goods depending on their morphological and functional particularities.Tο εθνικό μας δίκαιο, σε επίπεδο κοινής νομοθεσίας, χαρακτηρίζεται από τη διαχρονικότητα, ταυτόχρονα όμως και από την αποσπασματικότητα της αντιμετώπισης των ζητημάτων κυριότητας, προστασίας και διαχείρισης εν γένει των στοιχείων του περιβάλλοντος, τα οποία απασχολούν μεν την έννομη τάξη ήδη από την περίοδο της πρώιμης εθνικής νομοθεσίας, πάντοτε όμως μόνο μέσω ειδικών νομοθετημάτων (π.χ.
OTT opportunities for public broadcasters: A review and cross-country analysis in European countries
This analysis examines the opportunities and challenges presented by Over-The-Top (OTT) platforms for public service broadcasters in different European countries. Through a cross-country analysis of several EU countries, namely: France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania, and Sweden, this paper provides a comprehensive perspective on the topic. The analysis includes revenue trends, subscriber numbers, and other indicators to evaluate the performance of public broadcaster-owned OTT platforms. The findings suggest that while OTT platforms present challenges for public broadcasters, they also offer opportunities for these broadcasters to compete and attract viewers in a rapidly changing media landscape
On the competition between Video OTTs Platforms vs Traditional TV: A Niche Case Study in Greece
The paper examines the competition between traditional TV and Video OTT platforms in Greece. The niche theory has been adopted in order to measure users' gratification fulfilled by TV and OTTs, the competition superiority of each media and the similarity of those two media across seven aspects of gratification. An online survey conducted during first months of 2022 and 355 total feedbacks has been collected. Video OTTs score higher in six dimensions of gratification than TV, except financial benefit. Regarding niche overlap, results show that those media share close levels of similarity in information, ease of use and convenience. OTT's exceed TV in five dimensions of gratification. The highest score on the overall findings of competition superiority is in relaxation, while TV exceeds in financial benefit and information
