Lentiviral Vectors as Research Tools in Neurobiology: Design and Production

    No full text
Viral vectors are now common in contemporary neuroscience research and their use as gene transfer tools for the central nervous system has seen an enormous growth in the last 2 decades. This chapter discusses about designing, production, and use of lentiviral vectors (LVs), one of the most popular and versatile system currently available

retinal involvement in pigment dispersion syndrome

Retinal involvement has been documented in a number of patients with pigment dispersion syndrome, which also appears to be associated with a higher than normal risk of retinal detachment. We studied 24 patients with this syndrome to determine the prevalence of lattice degeneration and other retinal disorders associated with a predisposition to detachment. Lattice degeneration was found in 8 of 24 patients examined, with a prevalence that is significantly higher than that reported for normal subjects. Four eyes presented areas of retinoschisis and only one displayed a rhegmatogenous detachment. A father and son (both myopes) were found to have similar lattice lesions in the same retinal quadrants. These findings suggest that pigment dispersion syndrome may be associated with developmental anomalies that are not restricted to the anterior chamber but involve other portions of the bulb as well

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Biomechanical risk assessment of pathologists in the morgue

The purpose of this study is to research the risk of biomechanical overload in pathologists during autopsies performed in dissection room. During autopsies, operators are exposed both to the risks of manual handling, in transferring the cadaver from the trolley to the dissection table (and vice versa), and to awkward postures during the incision and opening of the cadaver to examine the organs. Following task analysis, we decided to use, according to the task, the methods that best describes it and include its peculiar characteristics. The methods used were: the REBA protocol, 3DSSPP software and surface electromyography. The results show that, in almost all the tasks investigated and with all the methods used, there was a medium-high risk of biomechanical overload. In the light of these results, we suggest possible intervention strategies for the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) during the performance of autopsies

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
