Filosofia e Border Studies. Dal confine come "oggetto" al confine come "dispositivo"

    No full text
In the present essay we analyse the role of philosophical investigation for the interdisci- plinary research field of the Border Studies. The main thesis of the paper is that a border cannot be ontologically considered as an object, and neither metaphorically as a simple line. Indeed, these approaches tend to extremely simplify the very nature of borders and bordering processes. Here we argue that borders are complex social phenomena produced by the coherent combination of several different elements. Therefore, we suggest that a fruitful way in order to conceptualize the nature of the border is the concept of dispositive, provided by Michel Foucault. The paper is structured as follows: in the first and second paragraph we show why the analysis of borders are increasingly a crucial topic both for scientific and public debate; in the third paragraph we criticize the approach provided by social ontology, focused on the conceptualization of the border as an object; in the fourth paragraph, starting from a Rousseau’s suggestion, we analyse the phenomenology of bordering practices, and we argue that a border should be understood as a complex articulation of material and immaterial elements; in the fifth paragraph we introduce the notion of dispositive in order to catch the complex nature of borders; in the conclusions we summarize the main results of the paper and we sketch possible further lines of research

Biopolitica e messianismo politico in Erich Unger

    No full text
The present article aims at analysing Erich Unger’s Politik und Metaphysik, his main philosophical text. Even though this text, published in 1921, has been almost forgotten by philosophical literature, we suggest it can be reconsidered in its hidden critical potentiality. The paper is structured as follows: after a brief consideration on Walter Benjamin’s uses of Unger’s thesis, the essay investigates the biopolitical and messianic vocabulary used in Politik und Metaphysik, which is, at the end, an attempt to actualize the biblical imagine of the exodus. At the end, the paper suggests further lines of research

The present article aims at analysing Erich Unger’s Politik und Metaphysik, his main philosophical text. Even though this text, published in 1921, has been almost forgotten by philosophical literature, we suggest it can be reconsidered in its hidden potentiality, especially if we want to better understand contemporary migrant crisis. The paper is structured as follows: after a brief consideration on Walter Benjamin’s uses of Unger’s thesis, the essay investigates the messianic dimension of human movement discussed in Politik und Metaphysik, which is, at the end, an attempt to actualize the biblical imagine of the exodus. At the end, the paper suggests under- standing human migration as a critique of the world

Antropologia filosofica, metafisica degli elementi e filosofia della tecnologia in Carl Schmitt

    No full text
The essay is aimed at illustrating the hidden philosophical anthropology proposed by German legal and political philosopher Carl Schmitt. Schmitt’s anthropology has always been understood just as the basis of a political philosophy dominated by the friend-enemy opposition. However, such an interpretation usually under- mines other aspects, which still represents a neglected path of research. A clos- er interpretation of Schmitt’s intellectual and conceptual relations with German Philosophische Anthropologie (Helmuth Plessner and Arnold Gehlen) could high- light these aspects. The paper is structured as follows: in the first part, I summa- rize the canonical approach to Schmitt’s political anthropology; in the second part, I explain why the doctrine of the four elements is highly relevant for Schmitt’s philosophical anthropology; in the third part, I argue that Schmitt’s metaphysics of elements is strictly linked to his philosophy of technology; in the fourth part, I analyse a few conceptual problems that emerge from this interpretation; in the last part, I summarize the results of the essay and suggest a new line of investi- gation

La materia della sovranità. Una critica filosofica dei muri

    No full text
Despite the postmodern image of a smooth and borderless world, physical barriers currently represent one of the most im-portant instruments of political articulation of the statal space. However, several ethical and political problems arise from it. This paper presents a philosophical critique of teichopolitical rationalities, namely, the politics of walls. The first section anal-yses two ancient teichopolitical paradigms. The second section analyses the wall as an element that nullifies the image of a glob-al borderless world. The third section deals with the wall as a protective instrument of the statal body. The fourth section high-lights the ethical and political problems produced by walls. In the fifth section we argue that walls represent a spectacularized form of sovereignty. In the conclusions I summarize the results and suggest that teichopolitical logics foment a feeling of paranoia on a global level

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Accessibility planning tools for sustainable and integrated land use/transport (LUT) development: an application to Rome

The paper fits into the themes of sustainable accessibility planning in urban areas, that can be defined as the integration of transport and land use planning to achieve sustainable development. In particular the study proposes a tool to support the choices of activities location, which is based on a new aggregate (zone-specific) indicator: the ‘Marginal Activity Access Cost’, providing estimation in monetary terms of the impacts on mobility and on the environment of locating one new activity in a specific zone of the urban area. The proposed indicator is validated through an application to the urban area of Rome
