    Vasotocinergic control of agonistic behavior told by Neotropical fishes

    The hypothalamic neuropeptides of the vasopressin-oxytocin family (and their homologs for non-mammalian species) are key modulators of the Social Brain Network, acting via specific receptors reported in all the nuclei of this network. Different conclusive examples have proven the context-dependency actions of hypothalamic nonapeptides on social behavior in several vertebrate taxa. Teleost fishes provide endless possibilities of experimental model systems to explore the underlying mechanisms of nonapeptide actions on social behavior given that they are the most diverse group of vertebrates. Although it has been difficult to identify commonalities of nonapeptide actions across species, indisputable evidence in many teleost species have demonstrated a clear role of vasotocin in the modulation of aggressive and sexual behaviors. Though Neotropical South American fish contribute an important percentage of teleost diversity, most native species remain unexplored as model systems for the study of the neuroendocrine bases of social behavior. In this review, we will revise recent data on the two model systems of Neotropical fish, South American cichlids and weakly electric fish that have contributed to this issue.Fil: Silva, Ana C..     Social control of spermatogenesis and steroidogenesis in cichlid fish: A comparative approach

    Social animals with hierarchical dominance systems are susceptible to changes their environment. Interactions with conspecifics can greatly affect individual’s behavior and reproductive success. This review will show how social behavior modulates gonadal steroidogenesis and spermatogenesis in African and Neotropical cichlid fish with different social systems and how this modulation regulates reproductive capacity. Social behavior and aggressiveness are strongly linked to sex steroids, glucocorticoids and neuropeptides. The challenge hypothesis suggests that behavioral interactions increase androgen levels in response to social instability, but there is little evidence regarding estradiol levels. It has been recently demonstrated that in male Cichlasoma dimerus, a Neotropical cichlid fish, the challenge hypothesis could also be extended to estrogens. In C. dimerus, dominant males have higher gonadosomatic index than subordinated; the percentage of spermatocytes and spermatids is higher in subordinates, while dominants show a greater percentage of spermatozoa. In other species of African cichlids, socially suppressed subordinate males are not reproductively incompetent maintaining some activity at every level of their reproductive axis. Axis reactivation upon social ascent is similar to the initiation of puberty in mammals, as well as the reoccurrence of puberty observed in seasonally breeding animals. In conclusion, social behavior and reproductive strategies in females cichlids are still understudied, and Neotropical cichlids still constitute a group that deserves more attention, considering cichlids’ diversity in mating systems, reproductive behavior and parental care. This review highlights the importance of performing further studies and additional research in these two areas, which still remain to be addressed.Fil: Scaia, María Florencia.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Gross anatomy and histology of the alimentary system of Characidae (Teleostei: Ostariophysi: Characiformes) and potential phylogenetic information

    A compared study of the morphology of the alimentary tract and liver of seven selected species corresponding to the main clades of the Characidae family is presented herein. Three new set of characters corresponding to 1) alimentary tract gross anatomy, 2) alimentary tract histology and 3) liver gross anatomy are evaluated as potential sources of data for future phylogenetic studies of the Characidae. Not considerable interspecific variation was observed at the histological level and therefore this source is not considered to be phylogenetically informative at the taxonomic level analyzed. In contrast, liver and alimentary tract gross anatomy presented important interspecific variation while a relatively homogenous intraspecific morphology was observed. Those characters are optimized in tree-topologies from previous phylogenetic analyses and their evolution and potential relationship with ecological traits are discussed.Un estudio comparado de la morfología del tracto alimentario y el hígado de siete especies seleccionadas correspondientes a los principales clados de la familia Characidae es presentada aquí. Tres nuevos conjuntos de caracteres correspondientes a 1) anatomía gruesa del tracto alimentario, 2) histología del tracto alimentario y 3) anatomía gruesa del hígado son evaluados aquí como potenciales fuentes de información para futuros estudios filogenéticos de los Characidae. No se observó una variación intraespecífica considerable a nivel histológico y consecuentemente esta fuente no es considerada como informativa filogenéticamente al nivel taxonómico analizado. En contraste, la anatomía gruesa del hígado y el tracto alimentario presentaron una variación interespecífica importante mientras que una relativamente homogénea variación intraespecífica fue observada.     Modulation of behavior in zebrafish, Danio rerio, according to female reproductive status and visual and chemical cues

    Zebrafish, Danio rerio, is one of the most studied vertebrate models. However, there are stillmany aspects of its reproductive behavior to be elucidated. The aim of this work was to clarify whether males and females of this species display different behaviors according to sexual status, and the kind of cues they were exposed to (visual and/or chemical). Females in two different sexual status, pre- (PreS) or post-spawning (PostS), were exposed to single males cues (visual or chemical) or complementary cues (visual and chemical together). PreS females spent more time near the male’s compartment than PostS when they were exposed to complementary cues, but no differences were found when only one cue was present. Males showed a higher proximity to females when they were exposed to visual, and both cues together, but no difference was found according to females’ reproductive status. When no barrier was present, males and PreS females spent more time swimming together than males with PostS females. These results showed that females’ reproductive status, and the kind of cues to which females and males are exposed to, can modulate behaviors related to reproduction. Particularly, both cues together (visual and chemical) arenecessary to trigger different behaviors in females according to their reproductive status.Fil: Cavallino, Luciano.     Aggressive behavior and reproductive physiology in females of the social cichlid fish Cichlasoma dimerus

    The South American cichlid fish Cichlasoma dimerus is a freshwater species that presents social hierarchies, a highly organized breeding activity, biparental care and a high frequency of spawning. Spawning is followed by a period of parental care (about 20 days in aquaria conditions) during which the cooperative pair takes care of the eggs, both by fanning them and by removing dead ones. The different spawning events in the reproductive period were classified as female reproductive stages which can be subdivided in four phases, according to their offspring degree of development: (1) female with prespawning activity (day 0), (2) female with eggs (day 1 after fertilization), (3) female with hatched larvae (day 3 after fertilization) and (4) female with swimming larvae (FSL, day 8 after fertilization). In Perciform species gonadotropin-releasing hormone type-3 (GnRH3) neurons are associated with the olfactory bulbs acting as a potent neuromodulator of reproductive behaviors in males. The aim of this study is to characterize the GnRH3 neuronal system in females of C. dimerus in relation with aggressive behavior and reproductive physiology during different phases of the reproductive period. Females with prespawning activity were the most aggressive ones showing GnRH-3 neurons with bigger nuclear and somatic area and higher optical density than the others. They also presented the highest levels of plasma androgen and estradiol and maximum gonadosomatic indexes. These results provide information about the regulation and functioning of hypothalamus–pituitary–gonads axis during reproduction in a species with highly organized breeding activity.Fil: Tubert, Cecilia.     Effect of the organochlorine pesticide endosulfan on GnRH and gonadotrope cell populations in fish larvae

    Endocrine-disrupting chemicals can influence the hypothalamus-pituitary- gonad axis and possibly affect reproduction in vertebrates. We analyzed the effect of 30-day endosulfan (ES) exposure in sexually undifferentiated larvae of the cichlid fish Cichlasoma dimerus. The number, area, mean cytoplasmic and nuclear diameter, and mean cytoplasmic optical density of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) I, II, and III immunoreactive (ir-) neurons and β follicle-stimulating hormone (βFSH) ir-cells were measured. Animals exposed to the highest ES concentration (0.1 μg/l) showed a decrease in GnRH I nucleus/cytoplasm area ratio upon exposure. Nuclear area and mean nuclear diameter of βFSH ir-cells was higher in ES treated fish. βFSH nucleus/cytoplasm area ratio was high in exposed animals, and animals exposed to 0.1 μg/l ES showed smaller mean cytoplasmic optical density. These findings suggest that ES affects GnRH I and βFSH protein synthesis/release.
