Seismic Vulnerability of Ancient Colonnade: Two Story Colonnade of the Forum in Pompeii
In this chapter, a numerical study to investigate the seismic vulnerability of the two storey colonnade of the Forum in Pompeii has been conducted. Software based on the Distinct Element Method (DEM) of analysis has been used. The colonnade was represented as an assemblage of distinct blocks connected together by zero thickness interfaces which could open and/or close depending on the magnitude and direction of stresses applied to them. Both static and non-linear static analyses have been undertaken. Also, a sensitivity study has been performed to investigate the effect of frictional resistance of the joints on the structural response of the colonnade. Seismic Retrofitting for Masonry Historical Buildings: Design Philosophy and Hierarchy of Interventions
The static and seismic retrofitting design, for masonry historical buildings, has to follow a right hierarchy
of interventions, taking into account that to improve the seismic behavior of a masonry structure, it is
necessary to guarantee a “closed box” behavior for the whole structural body or, in case of complex
buildings, to guarantee a closed box behavior for each building’s wing. Thus it is fundamental to distinguish
the interventions for the global behavior improvement from those related to local reinforcements.
In this chapter is then proposed a scheme of interventions hierarchy and, therefore, a related design
process road-map together with the explanation of a correct design philosophy for the static and seismic
retrofitting of historical masonry buildings. Moreover it is also reported an example of two distinguished
levels of intervention, with numerical analyses supporting that solution
Seismic Vulnerability of Historic Centers: A Methodology to Study the Vulnerability Assessment of Masonry Building Typologies in Seismic Area
A methodology of investigation and diagnosis on the built patrimony of historic centres in seismic areas
is presented with the aim of collecting an extensive knowledge on the structural typologies and behaviour
of historic masonry buildings. This investigation is also the base for the prevention and/or repair
of damages caused by earthquakes. Small historic centres or residential buildings in larger centres
have been considered for long time as “minor architecture”, but they are meaningful testimonies of the
local cultural heritage and express the evolution of a society and of its cultural identity. The results of
the investigation carried out on different Italian historic centers, allowed also a critical review of the
reliability of the analytical models and of the effectiveness of the repair techniques applied in the past
decades. The guidelines emerging from the research results are here presented. A “minimal” diagnostic
investigation program is also suggested, in order to support the designers in their projects and to set up
appropriate mathematical models to study the vulnerability of the structures
The FP4026 Research Database on the fundamental period of RC infilled frame structures
AbstractThe fundamental period of vibration appears to be one of the most critical parameters for the seismic design of buildings because it strongly affects the destructive impact of the seismic forces. In this article, important research data (entitled FP4026 Research Database (Fundamental Period-4026 cases of infilled frames) based on a detailed and in-depth analytical research on the fundamental period of reinforced concrete structures is presented. In particular, the values of the fundamental period which have been analytically determined are presented, taking into account the majority of the involved parameters. This database can be extremely valuable for the development of new code proposals for the estimation of the fundamental period of reinforced concrete structures fully or partially infilled with masonry walls
Seismic performance of a mixed masonry-reinforced concrete building
The 6th of April 2009, a quite strong earthquake of magnitude ML =5.8 (Mw=6.3), struck in the city of L'Aquila. The seismic event caused serious injure to several masonry buildings, compromising a large part of the valuable historical and architectural heritage. The present work deals with seismic performance evaluation of an existing mixed masonry-reinforced concrete building in downtown L'Aquila city. A comprehensive discussion on the current limit capacity of the building based on the visual inspections of the occurred seismic damage, the experimental data from a wide campaign of on-site tests on the material properties, the results of numerical simulations from different naturally discrete models of the mixed masonry-reinforced concrete structure are presented. The seismic performance is evaluated through well-recognized N2 nonlinear static procedure. The Frame by Macro-Elements method is used to define an equivalent 3D frame representation of the structure. The obtained numerical results are directly compared with the surveyed damages

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
