    Dataset of scholarly publications for empirical evaluation of research productivity and trends of the ISI over two decades (1991-2010)

    Quantification of research performance is an obvious necessity of scientific institutions and enterprises for many academic pursuits. Scientometric measurements are indeed recognized as an indispensable tool for evidential judgment of research-activities performed by an individual or institute as well. Scholarly publications have been found always the most acceptable basis of evaluating research productivity, often combining with citation counts. This dataset enumerates on quantifiable characteristics of scholarly publications of the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) from1991 to 2010. It provides thorough documentation of the publications along with their citations for mapping the research of ISI over two distinct decades. It also presents the publications in different dimensions for empirical evaluation of research productivity and trends correlating the citation impact of the Institute. The exploration of this publication dataset was time-consuming and made rigorously. Scholarly publications having (at least) an author affiliation of ISI (in the by-line) appeared during the period were first retrieved from numerous sources (viz. Scopus®, Web of Science™, MathSciNet®, EconLit), then converted and captured in MS-Excel format. The technique of data conversion (from BibTeX to Excel, through CDS/ISIS using Fangorn) was extremely helpful to capture large amounts of data at the least possible time. However, the strenuous efforts were made for data filtration and validation through annual reports of the Institute. Validation of the dataset was no doubt a tedious job, but it gave an amazing experience on how to make the data-elements findable and accessible using robust techniques. A tiresome job was performed to count the citations (as in December 2017) for measuring the academic influence of ISI publications through Google-Scholar, Scopus®, and Web of Science™. The empirical dataset (comprising 7188 records) finally consolidated and organized systematically for sharing and reuse. It includes ‘raw data’ prepared for the doctoral dissertation work. Detailed description of the data collection (i.e. identification, gathering, conversion, filtering, validation, and consolidating) is provided in the Dissertation work (Chapter-4). It has also been used by the researcher in some of his articles. The dataset is, therefore, authoritative for conducting studies on different aspects of evaluative scientometrics. The author firmly believes that potential researchers would find the benefits from this interesting dataset, and will be used (re-used) further widening the coverage of research to develop better insights

Brings out popular standards, useful protocols, and open-source harvesters along with their intrinsic capabilities for harvesting and presenting metadata and introduces a variety of metadata services viz., OCLC’s catalogue service, UKOLN metadata editor service, OAIster harvester service, DP9 gateway service, etc. explores the underlying principles of metadata-harvesting in DSpace and web search engines. Discusses use of multiple metadata formats in DSpace archives for exposing domain-specific metadata; and the inherent mechanism for extensibility and interoperability functions. Proposes methods for creating metadata that can pursue high-precision document retrieval in dynamic collections. Also discuses semantic web technologies and use of specialized metadata for long-term management and preservation of digital objects

    Scientometric dimensions of cryptographic research

    Information security has been a crucial issue in modern information management; thus cryptographic techniques have become inevitable to safeguard the digital information assets as well as to defend the invasion of privacy in modern information society, and likely to have far reaching impact on national security policies. This paper demonstrates the intellectual development of cryptographic research based on quantifiable characteristics of scholarly publications over a decade of the present century (2001 to 2010). The study critically examines the publication growth, authorship pattern, collaboration trends, and predominant areas of research in cryptology. Rank list of prolific contributors, productive institutions, and predominant countries have been carried out using fractional counting method. Strenuous efforts have been made to perform the activity index (performance indicator) of JOC, to determine the degree of collaboration in quantitative terms, to ascertain the collaboration density, as well as to test the empirical validation of Lotka’s law in this scientific specialty. Major findings reveal that performance of JOC in cryptographic research corresponds precisely to the growth of world’s publication activity (activity index = 1.1) over a decade of time; single-authored papers count only 25 % and average authorship accounts for 2.4 per paper; an increasing trend of multi-authored publications and a significant degree of collaboration (DC = 0.74) implies that cryptographers prefer to work in highly collaborative manner; author productivity distribution data partially fits the Lotka’s law, when the value of α (productivity parameter) approximated to 2.35 (instead of 2) and the number of articles does not exceed two. While large majority of collaborations constituted across the countries (56 %), then adequate amount of inter-country bilateral and multilateral collaboration signifies higher density or greater strength in the research network; most of the potential collaborators are emanated from 10 institutions of 5 different countries; however, cryptographic research is dominated by USA and Israel. More interestingly, vast majority among top-twenty ranked productive authors are affiliated in USA and Israel; Yehuda Lindell is found to be the most prolific author followed by Rosario Gennaro (USA), Tamir Tassa (Israel), Jonathan Katz (USA), etc.; Anglo-American institutions are more open than their overseas competitors; University of California (six centers) is placed on the top of the productive institutions. The study entails distinct subject clusters (research streams); and author-assigned keyword frequencies revealed that cryptanalysis, discrete logarithm, elliptic curve, block cipher, provable security, cryptography, secure computation, oblivious transfer, public-key encryption, zero-knowledge are more prevalent and active topics of research in cryptology. The implications of empirical results to the field are discussed thoroughly, and further analyzes are proposed to visualize this assessment in a better way

    Scientometric evaluation of Sankhyá – the Indian Journal of Statistics

    This paper critically analyses 199 peer-reviewed articles published in Sankhyā during 2003 to 2007. It examines authorship pattern, collaboration trend among authors, predominant areas of statistical research, and time lag in publications. Subsequent analysis focuses on prolific contributors, degree of collaboration, collaboration density, active sub-domains of statistics and time lag trend. Findings reveal the following: (a) the number of articles reduced from 24.6% to 14.0% that conforms to the growth trend of statistical publications in India; (b) single-authored paper counts only 30%, the rest in collaboration either by two-authors (47%) or three-to-fiveauthors (23%) and average authorship accounts for 1.96 per paper; (c) contributors of Sankhyā worked in highly collaborative manner and the degree of collaboration (CC=0.698) is quite significant; and (d) most of the bilateral and multilateral collaborations has emanated from 12 institutions of 5 different countries. Ranked list of prolific authors has been carried out using fractional counting method. It is observed that author productivity is not in agreement with Lotka’s law, but productivity distribution data partially fits the law when the value of approximated to 2.77 and the number of papers does not exceed two. Broad subject clusters, such as statistics (153) and probability theory (38) constituted about 96% of the contributed articles. Nonparametric inference (18%), parametric inference (15%), design of experiments (10%) and multivariate analysis (8%) are found to be active areas of research in statistics. The study shows an average time lag of fifteen months to publish an article, and a declining trend of time lags following second-degree polynomial type has been observed in this scholarly journal

Despite various modes in transferring matrimonial information, increasing use of social networks offers new opportunities for newer matrimony services. The purpose of this paper is to present the state-of-the-art of popular matrimony service portals emerged in India for providing SDI (selective dissemination of information) based personalized services to multifarious groups of the nation. Addresses of selective portals provide glimpses of current Indian activities on matrimonial information systems and services. It also examines the potentialities of the four biggest matrimonial players (viz. shaadi, bharatmatrimony, jeevansathi and simplymarry) in the country consistent with the present and anticipated needs of the marriage-information-seekers. Comparison has been carried out based on the web metrics. The paper noticed that online matrimony services would have ever-increasing importance in satisfying the objectivity of social networking practices

    Reframing the debate on quality v/s quantity in research assessment

    The debate on quality versus quantity is still persistent for methodological considerations. These two approaches are highly contrasting in their epistemology and contrary to each other. A single composite indicator that reasonably senses both quality and quantity would be significant toward performance. This paper evaluates the potency of the combined metric for quality assessment of publications (QP) in India’s National Institutional Research Framework (NIRF) exercise in 2020. It also suggests a potential improvement in quality measurement to obtain the rankings more rationally with finer tunings
