Representation of Turkey's EU bid in the British Media

This research seeks to understand the political, economic, geographical and cultural discussions in the British media representation of Turkey’s bid to join the European Union (EU). The idiosyncratic aspect of the topic is that both Turkey and the British media have a special relationship with the EU. Turkey is the only inveterate EU membership candidate. No country has waited at the front door of the EU as long as Turkey yet. There are different reasons behind this and they make the issue interesting to contemplate. In addition to Turkey’s different status compared to the EU membership candidacy processes of other countries, the thesis also takes into account the different and awkward relationship between the EU and the UK, and inevitably the British media. Therefore, the analytical framework of the thesis draws on the notion of ‘a positive Other’ while explaining the media representation of Turkey’s EU bid. The research also highlights the ‘essentialist’ and ‘functionalist’ approaches in its attempt to explain the differences within the EU in understanding the fundamentals of the EU and the view about Turkish membership. The research sought to explore how Turkey’s EU bid was represented in the British media by focusing on one main research question, namely, ‘How was Turkey’s EU bid represented in the British media?’ In order to answer this question in a systematic way, the study employs a triangulation of different methods. In the empirical chapters, the study first looks at the coverage of different important periods in Turkey-EU relations between 1999 and 2006. The news items published in these periods by six news organisations from the British media are analysed by using quantitative and qualitative content analysis. Secondly, the thesis presents an analysis of how the coverage was produced. The analysis is based on the semi-structured, in-depth interviews conducted with the journalists who work, or had worked, for the British media and who had published news items about Turkey-EU relations. The data gathered from the interviews are presented by employing Shoemaker and Reese’s (1996) hierarchical model. In the concluding chapter of the thesis, the findings from the research are linked to the notion of ‘a positive Other’

The tension between center and periphery became more salient because of the political developments and social transformation in the post-1980 process in Turkey. Following rapid urbanisation, the appearance of rural life in city centers and the rise of neoliberal policies, a new discussion started in the media. This discussion created the conceptualisation of “White Turks” in the Turkish language. This study aims to investigate how the notion of White Turks emerged, what the notion means at the beginning and now, and what is politically attributed to the notion. All news reports and columns published in the national newspapers in the year 2017 were monitored and analysed. In total, 185 items, gathered from PRNet digital newspaper archive, were analysed by using thematic analysis technique. The items in the sample showed that the discussions related to White Turks changed since the 90s and 2000s. The notion of White Turks used to be predominantly related to cultural and economic issues in the past. In recent years, the notion has become more related to politics. This kind of politicisation has a negative tone in the coverage and the White Turks are now usually represented as a threat for Turkey

The great Syrian exodus: A discourse-historical approach to Syrian asylum seekers in the Turkish press coverage (2011-15)

This study aims to critically analyse the representation of Syrian asylum seekers in the Turkish print media. Taking into consideration their circulation numbers, ownership and political stance, five national newspapers were examined (Hurriyet, Posta, Sabah, Sozcu and Zaman). The data covers all news reports, columns and op-eds relating to Syrian asylum seekers, published between 15 March 2011 and 31 December 2015. Based on this time sample, the representation of Syrian asylum seekers in the Turkish press was first analysed by content analysis and then by employing critical discourse analysis, drawing on the discourse -histor-ical approach of the Vienna School. The article aims to reveal the most common discursive strategies of representing Syrian asylum seekers in the Turkish press. The overall data suggest that Turkish newspapers instrumentalized Syrian asylum seekers while positioning their editorial stance in political affairs. According to the findings, the Turkish print media most commonly represent Syrian asylum seekers with the words 'Multeci' (refugee) at 53.81 per cent and 'Siginmaci' (asylum seeker) at 37.44 per cent. When the labels are considered, it was seen that the Turkish press refers to ethnic identities more than religious or sectarian character-istics. Evaluating all of the quantitative and qualitative data, the article suggests that the pro-government titles deomonstrate more friendly coverage for Syrian asylum seekers. Among the papers in the sample, Sozcu disassociates itself with a clear anti-Syrian approach. Other papers have a mostly positive tone, especially if the issue is assessed in a humanitarian aspect. However, the overall positive tone should not be evaluated without the reality of 'political parallelism' in the Turkish media atmosphere

Motivations of University Students in Kosova for Using ChatGpt: A Uses and Gratifications Approach

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become an integral part of everyday life, significantly transforming how individuals interact with technology. As AI continues to evolve, it is reshaping communication, learning, and productivity. One of the most prominent examples of this transformation is the AI-powered chatbot ChatGPT, which has emerged as a widely used tool, fundamentally altering the dynamics of internet technologies and becoming a valuable resource for a broad audience (D, J., Srinivasan, M., Dhanunjay, G. S., & Shamala, R., 2023). This study aims to explore the motivations behind ChatGPT usage among undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students at Universities in Kosova, within the theoretical framework of the Uses and Gratifications Approach. Rooted in the idea that individuals actively choose media to fulfill specific needs, this research seeks to understand how and why students use ChatGPT and what types of gratifications they obtain through its use. The study adopts a quantitative research design and collects data through an online survey (administered via Google Forms), using the snowball sampling method to reach participants. The collected data focuses on usage frequency, purposes of use (e.g., academic support, language learning, content creation), and perceived benefits. It also explores the individual, social, and technological factors influencing students’ preferences. Preliminary findings indicate that university students in Kosova primarily use ChatGPT for educational purposes, such as accessing information, saving time, generating creative content, and solving academic problems. ChatGPT is not just a tool but has become a digital assistant that enhances students’ learning processes. Another significant aim of this research is to contribute to the theoretical expansion of the Uses and Gratifications framework in the context of emerging AI technologies. By examining user motivations and experiences, the study provides a deeper understanding of the social, psychological, and technological dimensions of human-AI interaction

Syrian Asylum Seekers in the Turkish Press: the Analysis of the First 5 Years (2011-2015)

Things happening in Syria since 2011 are probably one of the most inhumane experiences of the world history. More than 5 million Syrians who were enforced to leave their places are still struggling in different countries. The issue has received great interest from both the Turkish media and the world media. The study focuses on the press coverage of Syrian asylum seekers starting from the period the asylum seekers entered Turkey in 2011 until the year 2015. By this means, news articles and columns published in the highest circulated 5 newspapers in a period of 5 years were analysed by employing content analysis method. According to the findings, most news reports and columns employed a positive or balanced view towards asylum seekers. However, it was found that asylum seekers did not have opportunity to explain their own views in the press coverage. Therefore, asylum seekers were transformed into objects instead of giving them the opportunity to become active subjects. Another finding in the research is related to the legal concept of “refugee”. The concept is misused by the Turkish press and it is often seen as a synonym of the concept “asylum seeker”

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
