Willingness to work during initial lockdown due to COVID-19 pandemic: Study based on an online survey among physicians of Bangladesh
Background During the catastrophic situation of the COVID-19 pandemic, the role of the health care workers (HCWs) is the most crucial, and their absenteeism, whether due to inability or unwillingness, becomes a major concern for the national health system. Hence, the present study aimed to determine the willingness and its associated factors to work during the COVID-19 pandemic among the physicians of Bangladesh. Methods This was a cross-sectional study conducted from April 21 to May 10, 2020, using an online survey among the Bangladeshi physicians living in the country. Both univariate and multivariable binary logistic regression models were used to determine the predictors of the willingness of the physicians to work during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results More than 69% physicians reported that they were willing to work during the COVID-19 pandemic, 8.9% reported that they were not willing, while 21.4% of participants were not sure about their willingness. Younger age, having experience of treating patients during previous pandemics, working in the emergency departments and high self-reported compliance to the recommended PPE were important predictors of being willing to work during COVID-19 pandemic. Concern for family and risk of transmitting the infection to family members were most commonly reported as major barriers of working during the pandemic (30%) followed by having comorbidities (25%), lack of adequate safety measures (25%), fear of being infected (12.2%), not involved in clinical practice (12.5%) etc. Conclusions Though the majority of the physicians were willing to work during the COVID-19 pandemic, sufficient supply of PPE, support to maintain recommended quarantine and isolation policy after risky hospital duty along with adequate and effective training can increase their willingness to continue their sacred duty during this crucial pandemic. Psychological distress symptoms among healthcare professionals are significantly influenced by psychosocial work context, Ethiopia: A cross-sectional analysis
Background: Work-related psychosocial hazards result in numerous adverse effects on physical and psychological health, a reduction in quality of life and a decline in performance capacity to workers. While the condition is widespread across various occupations, healthcare sectors are acknowledged to be at high risk. In developing countries such as Ethiopia, however, the lack of reliable data on psychosocial hazards including psychological distress (PD) often hampers officials from planning for preventive actions. This study assessed the magnitude and influencing factors of PD among healthcare professionals in Gondar city, Ethiopia. Methods: We employed a cross-sectional survey of 422 healthcare professionals selected with a stratified random sampling technique between April and March 2019. The symptoms of psychological distress were assessed with a standardized 10 items Kessler Psychological Distress Scale instrument. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were conducted by use of SPSS program version 20. Factors associated with psychological distress symptoms were ascertained at < 0.05 p-value. Adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with a confidence interval (CI) of 95% was used to determine the strength of associations. Results: In total, 417questionnaires fully completed and returned with a response rate of 98.8%. Age ranges from 23 to 57 with a mean of 31.00 (± 8.219 SD) years. Work-related psychological distress symptoms in the past 4weeks stood at 44.4% (N = 185) [95%CI (39.8, 49.4)]. Being female worker [AOR: 2.07; 95% CI (1.29, 3.32)], high job demand [(AOR: 1.53; 95% CI (1.10, 2.57)] and low job control [AOR: 2.54; 95% CI (1.60, 4.04)] were significant factors of psychological distress. Conclusion: This study underscores the level of psychological distress among healthcare professionals is high. The experiences of psychological distress symptoms were significantly influenced by socio-demographic factors including sex and psychosocial job characteristics such as job demand and job control. Efforts to prevent the mental health of workers including psychological distress symptoms need to focus on individual attributes and job contexts.Gebisa Guyasa Kabito, Tesfaye Hambisa Mekonne

Hydraulic EngineeringCivil Engineering and Geoscience
Determinanten van kennisintensieve onderzoeks- en ontwikkelingssamenwerking
It is becoming increasingly important for companies to ensure a continuing supply of new knowledge. The development of innovative production processes and marketing strategies as well as better products and services improves the competitive position of firms on the world market. This is of special interest to Dutch firms who have only a small and open home market. The principal research question addressed in this thesis concerns the determinants that influence companies in their choice of whether or not to enter into a knowledge-intensive research and development collaboration. This thesis also looks in detail at the role of publicly financed research institutions such as universities, in the setting of the company innovation process as well as at cooperation among private firms. About 13% of all innovative firms in the Netherlands are engaged in some sort of knowledge-intensive research and development collaboration. Knowledge spillovers are an important reason to reject collaboration as a means of acquiring knowledge because spillovers worsen the appropriability conditions, thus decreasing the economic benefits gained from innovative efforts. In correspondence with the literature we find that a high level of R&D-intensity of the partners involved is a very important prerequisite for entering into knowledge intensive R&D-collaboration. Furthermore an important finding is that the probability of entering into a knowledge-intensive R&D-collaboration increases proportionally to the size of the firm. Most innovative firms choose to be engaged in both private and public types of knowledge intensive R&D-collaboration. From this it can be concluded that public and private types of collaboration are complementary to one another. Knowledge intensive R&D-collaboration is also of strategic importance making the decision whether to introduce either improved or newly-developed products onto the market. Firms engaged in knowledge intensive R&D-collaboration more often choose to introduce new products instead of improved products onto the market.Technology, Policy and Managemen
