Phase Diversity of Nickel Phosphides in Oxygen Reduction Catalysis

    No full text
Motivated by the challenge to find a low-cost catalyst with high activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), transition metal phosphides (TMPs) appear to be one of the most burgeoning alternatives to noble metal based electrocatalysts. In addition to the low cost, TMPs have numerous interesting features such as high conductivity and chemical stability. Since, the catalytic activity of TMPs is highly dependent on the metal/phosphorous ratio, herein, we report the investigation of nickel-phosphide/carbon composites of different stoichiometries (NixPy/C) with tractable nickel phosphide phases as promising electrocatalyst for ORR under alkaline and acidic conditions. The NixPy/C composites are obtained by carbonization of a Ni-struvite (NiNH4PO4 ⋅ H2O) coated phenol-formaldehyde resin at different temperatures, resulting in variations of the formed NixPy phases. As expected, it is found that the electrocatalytic ORR performance of the NixPy/C composites highly depends on the predominant phase of nickel phosphide formed. The highest catalytic activity for ORR in alkaline as well as acidic media was found for the NixPy/C composite with the highest proportion of Ni2P as a predominant phase, obtained at 800 °C. For composites with NiP2 and Ni12P5 as the predominant phase, obtained at lower and higher temperatures, respectively, a lower catalytic activity was found. © 2018 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Geobacter sulfurreducens inner membrane cytochrome transcriptional and phenotypic data

The data files include raw data as well as analyzed results for transcriptional analysis of WT G. sulfurreducens and mutant lacking BccR (GSU0598) under fumarate vs iron citrate growth conditions. This dataset also includes the phenotypic data files for experiments associated with this project.Geobacter sulfurreducens utilizes extracellular electron acceptors such as Mn(IV), Fe(III), syntrophic partners, and electrodes that vary from +0.4 to −0.3 V vs. Standard Hydrogen Electrode (SHE), representing a potential energy span that should require a highly branched electron transfer chain. Here we describe CbcBA, a bc-type cytochrome essential near the thermodynamic limit of respiration when acetate is the electron donor. Mutants lacking cbcBA ceased Fe(III) reduction at −0.21 V vs. SHE, could not transfer electrons to electrodes between −0.21 and −0.28 V, and could not reduce the final 10% – 35% of Fe(III) minerals. As redox potential decreased during Fe(III) reduction, cbcBA was induced with the aid of the regulator BccR to become one of the most highly expressed genes in G. sulfurreducens. Growth yield (CFU/mM Fe(II)) was 112% of WT in ∆cbcBA, and deletion of cbcL (an unrelated bc-cytochrome essential near −0.15 V) in ΔcbcBA increased yield to 220%. Together with ImcH, which is required at high redox potentials, CbcBA represents a third cytoplasmic membrane oxidoreductase in G. sulfurreducens. This expanding list shows how metal-reducing bacteria may constantly sense redox potential to adjust growth efficiency in changing environments.Office of Naval Research: N00014-16-1-2194, and N00014-18-1-2632.Joshi, Komal; Chan, Chi Ho; Bond, Daniel R. Analyses 68 unique titles of Baba translated works published between 1889 and 1950. The titles are held in the libraries of the University of Malaya (UM), Science University Malaysia (USM), National University of Malaysia (UKM), the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), National University of Singapore (NUS), National Library of Singapore (NLS) and the British Library (BL). The results reveal three periods of active publication of Baba translated works. A total of 18 works were translated before World War I, followed by 10 just after the war, 39 titles were published before the break of the World War II and 1 was identified in 1950. There were 103 persons involved in the 68 translated works, some of whom are responsible for more than one title. The most prominent translators were Chan Kim Boon, Wan Boon Seng, Seow Chin San and Lee Seng Poh. Some of the translators were also be editors, illustrators or editors. There were 31 publishers and 21 printing presses involved, all were located in Singapore. The most active publishers were Wan Boon Seng, Kim Seck Chy Press and Nanyang Romanised Malay Book Co. The translated works mainly cover historical classical Chinese stories, chivalrous stories, romances, folklore and legends. The titles were priced between 10 cents to 2 dollars in Straits currency. The University of Malaya Library held the largest number of unique title (62) out of which 15 were unique titles

A platinum (Pt)/ruthenium (Ru) alloy catalyst, highly resistant to CO poisoning, having a lattice constant of 3.856-3.885 Å and a particle size of 2-5 nm, and supported on a carrier. The Pt/Ru alloy catalyst is highly resistant to CO poisoning, thereby allowing for higher catalytic activity when used. That is, an electrode and a fuel cell having a longer lifetime can be prepared using a smaller amount of the Pt/Ru alloy catalyst

Self-compassion and bio-psychosocial well-being : the application of mindful self-compassion training on cancer survivors in Hong Kong

    No full text
Background: Cancer has profound bio-psycho-social impacts on cancer survivors. There is imminent need for psychosocial program that might address the multi-faceted challenges of cancer survivorship. Although self-compassion training has received increasing attention in the West, little is known about its clinical application. Objectives: Study 1 explores the psychometric properties of the Chinese adaptation of the Self-Compassion Scale and its short-form. Study 2 and 3 aim to assess the potential benefits of the Mindful Self-Compassion program as a psychosocial support program for Chinese cancer survivors of mixed cancer and of colorectal cancer respectively. Methods: Study 1 adopted a survey study design. A community sample of 455 adults were surveyed, and a subset of 287 were surveyed in the test-retest administration. An independent sample of 292 healthy adults were surveyed for cross-validation and short-form validation. Confirmatory Factor Analysis, regression analyses, and correlation analyses were conducted to assess the psychometric properties, validity, and reliability of the scale in Chinese. Study 2 adopted a non-blind, randomized controlled study design with wait-list control. A total of 37 Chinese cancer survivors were surveyed on their level of self-compassion, mindfulness qualities, psychological well-being, quality of sleep, cancer-related symptomatology, and emotional regulation indicated by heart rate variability. While Study 3 adopted a non-blind, randomized controlled study design with qualitative data from in-depth interviews. A total of 37 Chinese colorectal cancer survivors were surveyed. Repeated measure ANCOVA and Bonferroni-corrected pairwise comparisons were conducted to assess the effectiveness Mindful Self-Compassion program; and themes were identified from the in-depth interviews to obtain fined-grained information regarding the potential effectiveness of the program. Results: Study 1 suggested that self-compassion could be conceptualized by the 6-factor model proposed by its original author, or by the culturally relevant 2 second-order factors model. Findings demonstrated that the scale in Chinese and its short-form are valid and reliable instruments for use in research and clinical practice. Study 2 showed statistical significant improvements on self-soothing attitude, mindfulness qualities, depressive symptoms, positive affect, cancer-related psychological symptoms, and emotional regulation as indexed by heart rate variability. Findings also pointed to potential benefits of self-compassion in reducing anxiety and negative affect, as well as in improving sleep and cancer symptoms. Study 3 showed statistical significant improvement on self-soothing attitude among colorectal cancer survivors. Although not statistically significant, findings also suggested patterns of improvement on measures of psychological well-being, emotional regulation, and cancer-related symptoms. Nevertheless, qualitative data showed that participants of the Mindful Self-Compassion program reported enhanced self-awareness, better sleep, and the ability to response to daily life adversity with acceptance and non-reactivity. Conclusion and discussion: The scale validation study offered a robust, and psychometrically sound measurement of self-compassion in Chinese. Results of the randomized controlled trials showed that self-compassion can be cultivated through training; they also yielded preliminary evidence to potential benefits of self-compassion on biopsychosocial well-being of cancer survivors. Further research is necessary to yield further support the application of Mindful Self-Compassion program in cancer care, and to further our understanding in the underlying mechanisms of how self-compassion works.published_or_final_versionSocial Work and Social AdministrationDoctoralDoctor of Philosoph
