APPLICATION OF XE-129 NMR-SPECTROSCOPY AND EXAFS TO PROBE THE FORMATION OF A BIMETALLIC CLUSTER IN ZEOLITE-Y

Palladium was supported on CaY zeolite by ion exchange of Pd(NH3)(4)(2+) into CaY zeolite, calcination in O-2 and subsequent reduction with H-2. Platinum and silver were added to this Pd/CaY zeolite by ion exchange of Pt(NH3)(4)(2+) and Ag+, respectively, and subsequent reduction with Hg. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure of these metals indicates that the successive metal-loading treatments lead first to the formation of a 1-nm Pd cluster inside the supercage of CaY zeolite and to the subsequent formation of bimetallic clusters through incorporation of Pt and Ag atoms into the small Pd cluster. The line width and chemical shift of Xe-129 NMR spectrum of xenon gas adsorbed on the zeolite show dramatic changes during the metal clustering procedure, which indicates that Xe-129 NMR spectroscopy can be used to probe the formation of bimetallic clusters

Wastewater reuse in central Asia: implications for the design of pond systems

    No full text
The paper examines the potential of waste stabilisation ponds to provide water for reuse in extreme continental climates such as those of central Asia, where precipitation is low and summer evaporation rates are high. A simple model is used to predict water availability, BOD and faecal coliform removal for different configurations and operating regimes. The results show a significant proportion of flows could be saved for irrigation or river and aquifer replenishment: if current standard designs can be modified for these climates, the outcome is likely to be both more robust and more flexible in terms of types of reuse. The paper concludes with three case studies of evaporation pond systems in Kazakhstan, assessing their potential for conversion to full biological treatment systems for water conservation and reuse

Use of pyridoxine-alpha-ketoglutarate (PAK) in hepatic encephalopathy

    No full text
Pyridoxine-alpha-ketoglutarate (PAK) was administered to patients with high blood ammonia levels and with clinical signs of hepatic encephalopathy (HE). Plasma concentrations of ammonia decreased and clinical symptomatology improved. The activity of PAK was greater than that of lactulose in lowering blood ammonia levels but not significantly different in its relief of neuropsychic symptoms

Electrochemistry as a correlation tool candidate with catalytic activities in Ru-catalyzed hydrolytic oxidation of organosilane

    No full text
Electrochemical parameters measured from a series of ruthenium complexes are nicely correlated with both structural changes and catalytic activities of those species under the reaction conditions providing a possibility that electrochemistry may offer a facile tool for better understanding of some transition metal-catalyzed reactions. Production of ϕ mesons in Au+Au collisions at 11.7A GeV∕c

    No full text
We report on a measurement of ϕ-meson production in Au+Au collisions at a beam momentum of 11.7A GeV∕c by experiment 917 at the alternating gradient synchroton. The measurement covers the midrapidity region 1.2<y<1.6. Transverse-mass spectra and rapidity distributions are presented as functions of centrality characterized by the number of participant projectile nucleons. The yield of ϕ’s per participant projectile nucleon increases strongly in central collisions in a manner similar to that observed for kaons

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
