    The role of the saver in a HPLCs heat transfer process: A transient analysis

    This work describes the experimental validation of a mathematical model implemented in Matlab/Simulink®, which is used to investigate energy consumption in the production process of high-pressure laminate composites (HPLCs). First, experimental onsite temperature measurements are used to determine parameters for the core component, i.e. the package, consisting of several layers of different materials. These otherwise hard to assess quantities are the generated power due to exothermal reactions in the cross-linking phase, and the piecewise approximation for the variable heat capacity of the impregnated paper over the heating phase of the process. The capability of the whole model (including the hot and cold water storage tanks) to replicate the behaviour of the actual production process has been verified. The validated model has been employed to investigate the influence of a saver tank for the spent hot water to be employed in the early stage of the heating phase of the process, with the load and discharge phases lasting three or five minutes each. Computations demonstrate that significant savings in energy (up to 34) can be obtained

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     A Procedure for Designing Custom-Made Implants for Forehead Augmentation in People Suffering from Apert Syndrome

    This paper presents a methodological procedure, based on the anatomical reconstruction and constrained deformation, to design custom-made implants for forehead augmentation in people affected by Apert syndrome, experiencing a frontal bone deficiency. According to the anthropometric theory, a cranial landmarks identification procedure was applied to retrieve, from a repository, a healthy skull, used as reference geometry for implant modelling. Then, using constrained deformation and free-form modelling techniques, it was possible to design a patient-specific implant. At last, the implant was realised using a custom mould, specially designed according to the patient’s needs to provide an accurate fit of the defect site. The design procedure was tested on a patient suffering from Apert syndrome. Three implants were virtually modelled and 3D-printed for pre-surgical evaluation. Their shapes were 3D compared with a reference one (handcrafted by a surgeon) to test the accuracy. Deviations are negligible, and the customised implant fulfilled the surgeon’s requirements

    A novel approach to achieve breast symmetry in a single-stage procedure

    Preservation of the skin envelope and the inframammary fold is the main factor in achieving breast symmetry in unilateral reconstruction. Skin sparing mastectomy (SSM) type-IV followed by immediate autologous reconstruction and contralateral symmetrization permits realizing this goal in large, ptotic breasted patients, and tumor superficially located in the inferior quadrants. If the tumor is superficially located in the superior or inferior quadrants with a previous lumpectomy or quadrantectomy scar in the superior quadrants, modified radical mastectomy and a staged procedure are recommended to avoid poor cosmetic results. Two patients who underwent immediate autologous reconstruction following SSM type-V with contralateral symmetrization in a one-stage procedure are presented

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Background: Reconstruction of a functional tongue with proper motility and sensation after subtotal resection is a demanding procedure. The authors describe the reinnervated mushroom-shaped anterolateral thigh perforator flap for subtotal tongue reconstruction.Methods: Thirteen patients (mean age, 54.8 years; range, 49 to 71 years) diagnosed with T3 and T4 squamous cell carcinomas were allocated prospectively to anterior total mobile (n = 7) or subtotal tongue resection (n = 6). All patients received the mushroom-shaped anterolateral thigh perforator flap. A Likert scale ranging from 1 to 4 was used to assess speech intelligibility, swallowing function, and cosmetic results. Epicritic and proprioceptive sensitivity testing was performed with the Pressure-Specified Sensory Device on the tip of the tongue preoperatively, on the neotongue at the donor site preoperatively, and at the recipient site 12 months postoperatively; protopathic thermoreceptor and nociceptors were clinically investigated. Outcomes were analyzed, and values of p < 0.05 were considered significant.Results: All flaps healed uneventfully (mean follow-up, 18 months). Six patients (46.2 percent) recovered a nearly natural deglutition, whereas seven (53.8 percent) had mild impairment (p = 0.274). Normal intelligible speech was achieved in seven cases (53.8 percent), and acceptable intelligible speech was achieved in six (46.2 percent) (p = 0.286). Aesthetic results were excellent in eight patients (61.5 percent) and good in five (38.5 percent) (p = 0.592). All patients recovered epicritic, proprioceptive, and protopathic sensitivity; cortical upgrading phenomena of the recipient nerve were observed.Conclusion: The reinnervated mushroom-shaped anterolateral thigh perforator flap was found to be an innovative and effective option for subtotal tongue reconstruction.CLINICAL QUESTION/LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Therapeutic, IV

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
