Retelling racialized violence, remaking white innocence: the politics of interlocking oppressions in transgender day of remembrance

    No full text
Transgender Day of Remembrance has become a significant political event among those resisting violence against gender-variant persons. Commemorated in more than 250 locations worldwide, this day honors individuals who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. However, by focusing on transphobia as the definitive cause of violence, this ritual potentially obscures the ways in which hierarchies of race, class, and sexuality constitute such acts. Taking the Transgender Day of Remembrance/Remembering Our Dead project as a case study for considering the politics of memorialization, as well as tracing the narrative history of the Fred F. C. Martinez murder case in Colorado, the author argues that deracialized accounts of violence produce seemingly innocent White witnesses who can consume these spectacles of domination without confronting their own complicity in such acts. The author suggests that remembrance practices require critical rethinking if we are to confront violence in more effective ways. Phase-resolved VLT spectroscopy of the bursting low-mass X-ray binaries 4U 1636-536/V801 Ara and 4U 1735-444/V926 Sco is presented. Doppler images of the N iiiλ4640 Bowen transition reveal compact spots which we attribute to fluorescent emission from the donor star and enable us to define a new set of spectroscopic ephemerides. We measure Kem= 277 ± 22 and 226 ± 22 km s−1 from the N iii spots in V801 Ara and V926 Sco, respectively, which represent strict lower limits to the radial velocity semi-amplitude of the donor stars. Our new ephemerides provide confirmation that light-curve maxima in V801 Ara and likely V926 Sco occur at superior conjunction of the donor star and hence photometric modulation is caused by the visibility of the X-ray heated donor. The velocities of He iiλ4686 and the broad Bowen blend are strongly modulated with the orbital period, with phasing supporting emission dominated by the disc bulge. In addition, a reanalysis of burst oscillations in V801 Ara, using our spectroscopic T0, leads to K1= 90–113 km s−1. We also estimate the K-corrections for all possible disc flaring angles and present the first dynamical constraints on the masses of these X-ray bursters. These are K2= 360 ± 74 km s−1, f(M) = 0.76 ± 0.47 M⊙ and q= 0.21–0.34 for V801 Ara and K2= 298 ± 83 km s−1, f(M) = 0.53 ± 0.44 M⊙ and q= 0.05–0.41 for V926 Sco. Disc flaring angles α≥ 12° and q≃ 0.26–0.34 are favoured for V801 Ara whereas the lack of K1 constraint for V926 Sco prevents tight constraints on this system. Although both binaries seem to have intermediate inclinations, the larger equivalent width of the narrow N iii line in V801 Ara at phase 0.5 relative to phase 0 suggests that it has the higher inclination of the two

Is there still a place for the concept of therapeutic regression in psychoanalysis?

    No full text
The author uses his own failure to find a place for the idea of therapeutic regression in his clinical thinking or practice as the basis for an investigation into its meaning and usefulness. He makes a distinction between three ways the term ‘regression’ is used in psychoanalytic discourse: as a way of evoking a primitive level of experience; as a reminder in some clinical situations of the value of non-intervention on the part of the analyst; and as a description of a phase of an analytic treatment with some patients where the analyst needs to put aside normal analytic technique in order to foster a regression in the patient. It is this third meaning, which the author terms “therapeutic regression” that this paper examines, principally by means of an extended discussion of two clinical examples of a patient making a so-called therapeutic regression, one given by Winnicott and the other by Masud Khan. The author argues that in these examples the introduction of the concept of therapeutic regression obscures rather than clarifies the clinical process. He concludes that, as a substantial clinical concept, the idea of therapeutic regression has outlived its usefulness. However he also notes that many psychoanalytic writers continue to find a use for the more generic concept of regression, and that the very engagement with the more particular idea of therapeutic regression has value in provoking questions as to what is truly therapeutic in psychoanalytic treatment

Portraying ageing: its contradictions and paradoxes

    No full text
PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to highlight the stigma surrounding old age, which in many ways has increased rather than decreased with the ageing of the population. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The approach of this paper is to introduce the reader to recent writing and research surrounding talk of a “demograhic time bomb”, with the ageing of populations world wide. It also looks back on the work on “ageing studies” over the last two decades, revealing the prevailing disavowals of old age among the old themselves, as well as the contrasting gendered dynamics of the ways in which we are, as Margaret Gullette writes, “aged by culture”. FINDINGS: The author introduces the conceptual notion of “temporal vertigo” to the complicated effects of the multiplicity of continuities and discontinuities older people experience when reflecting upon who they are over a lifetime. Ageing is of interest for those who have always been sceptical about any notion of the “true self”, allowing us to puzzle over how the account the old give of themselves will rely upon their ability to incorporate differing versions of the self, woven into the volatilities of memory and fantasy. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: The paper's exploration of the radical ambiguities in the representation and discussions surrounding old age in these times

Copyright, contratto e accesso alla conoscenza: un’analisi comparata = Copyright, contract and access to knowledge: a comparative analysis.

= ENGLISH VERSION = Along with a comparative perspective that takes account of the U.S. and Italian law, this work aims to explore the interface between copyright and contract lae in publishing process. In the current publishing environment, contracts and technology play a dominant role in the exploitation of copyrighted works. Publishers are granted by assignment of all copyright rights to reproduce and publish the work, but also to exercise control over its contents through technological protection measures. At the same time, mass digitization allows libraries and other organizations to make contents available online, which it entails a redefinition of the traditional publishing process and introduces new players to the scene (e.g., Google Books). Hence, technology proves to be a powerful instrument for the spread of knowledge and it is on this pattern that Open Access (OA) is rapidly gaining ground. Mostly based on a bottom-up approach that is on soft law, institutional policies and contracts, OA designs a new legal environment targeting the objectives of free accessibility, further distribution, and proper archiving of publications. These aims can be achieved through the creation of new open access business models to publish on OA journals (gold road) or to self-archive in institutional or disciplinary repositories works that have been originally published in conventional journals (green road). However, in order for OA to be fully developed it is necessary to devise a principled and feasible approach to the dissemination of scholarly works against the current social, economic and legal background. Indeed, the importance of OA is steadily recognized by legislators who integrate OA provisions into their legal system. This is an innovation of great significance, which was first fostered in the USA, and then extended in some European countries such as Italy and Germany in the European framework. Nevertheless, considering the different law systems, the formal law need to be combined with national strategies and institutional policies providing adequate incentives to the authors, while also promoting academic freedom and the right to knowledge access

'We are heartbroken and furious!': rethinking violence and the (anti-)globalisation movements

    No full text
Book synopsis: This book provides a comprehensive and nuanced analysis of the 'anti-globalisation' struggles taking place around the world. It shows the complexity and diversity of these movements and illustrates this with detailed empirical studies of local, national and transnational resistance in the United States, Europe, Asia and Africa. The authors introduce a variety of competing theoretical perspectives from international political economy, social movement theory, globalisation studies, feminism, and postmodernism, explaining how activism has influenced theory and how theory can help activists to modify their tactics

Dreamers of the Dark: Kerry Bolton and the Order of the Left Hand Path, a Case-study of a Satanic/Neo-Nazi Synthesis

    No full text
In 1990 a small self-published journal/magazine called The Watcher was distributed among New Zealand's occult underground. The Watcher described itself as 'the New Zealand Voice of the Left Hand Path', and was published as the journal of the Order of the Left Hand Path. The Watcher and the Order directed its attentions towards those occultists who identified themselves as Satanists and, as such, the journal articulated a distinctly Satanic philosophy and perspective. However, as the journal evolved and developed, renaming itself as The Heretic and The Nexus in later years, there arose alongside Satanic philosophy an increasing emphases on what could be called esoteric Nazism or esoteric Nationalism. Given that the editor of The Watcher was Kerry Bolton, a man who has been immersed in New Zealand's Nationalist/neo-Nazi movement since the early 1970s, such an increasingly political orientation was perhaps unsurprising. This thesis examines the way in which the Order bought Satanic and neo-Nazi ideologies together and the resulting synthesis. It also looks at the transition from being a Satanic order led by a neo-Nazi to an openly neo-Nazi Order that uses Satanic philosophy to justify and popularise its conception of National Socialism

Nrf2 deficiency influences susceptibility to steroid resistance via HDAC2 reduction

    No full text
Abnormal lung inflammation and oxidant burden are associated with a significant reduction in histone deacetylase 2 (HDAC2) abundance and steroid resistance. We hypothesized that Nrf2 regulates steroid sensitivity via HDAC2 in response to inflammation in mouse lung. Furthermore, HDAC2 deficiency leads to steroid resistance in attenuating lung inflammatory response, which may be due to oxidant/antioxidant imbalance. Loss of antioxidant transcription factor Nrf2 resulted in decreased HDAC2 level in lung, and increased inflammatory lung response which was not reversed by steroid. Thus, steroid resistance or inability of steroids to control lung inflammatory response is dependent on Nrf2-HDAC2 axis. These findings have implications in steroid resistance, particularly during the conditions of oxidative stress when the lungs are more susceptible to inflammatory response, which is seen in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease

    ADM1 performance using SS-OFMSW with non-acclimated inoculums

This paper assesses the anaerobic digestion (AD) of the source-sorted organic fraction of municipal solid waste (SS-OFMSW). For this purpose, an experimental programme was implemented involving the operation and monitoring of two bench-scale anaerobic digesters, continuously fed with SSOFMSW. The mathematical model (ADM1) was then applied to simulate the process of AD of SSOFMSW. While start-up of the digesters was relatively slow, re-inoculation with cattle manure with effluent dilution reduced the acclimation period and achieved better stability, accommodating a feeding rate at an OLR = 2.39 kg TVS m-3 day-1. The high recorded methane gas production rate, reaching (0.1-2.5 m3 CH4-m3 reactor day), confirms the excellent biodegradability of the type of waste used (SS-OFMSW) and its suitability for AD. Satisfactory simulations of soluble chemical oxygen demand (COD), pH, and methane composition of biogas were obtained, whereas volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentrations in both reactors were over-predicted albeit capturing its general trend. © IWA Publishing 2012.Bajzelj B., 2010, WAST 2010 C 28 29 SE; Batstone D.J., 2002, IWA ANAEROBIC DIGEST, V1; Biswas J, 2007, BIOMASS BIOENERG, V31, P80, DOI 10.1016-j.biombioe.2006.06.013; Blumensaat F, 2005, WATER RES, V39, P171, DOI 10.1016-j.watres.2004.07.024; Boubaker F., 2008, BIORESOURCE TECHNOLO, V99, P6565; CECCHI F, 1986, SCI TOTAL ENVIRON, V56, P183, DOI 10.1016-0048-9697(86)90323-2; Cesur D., 2004, THESIS COLORADO STAT; Chen ZB, 2009, BIORESOURCE TECHNOL, V100, P4623, DOI 10.1016-j.biortech.2009.04.066; Daels T, 2009, ENVIRON TECHNOL, V30, P1575, DOI 10.1080-09593330903358278; Derbal K, 2009, BIORESOURCE TECHNOL, V100, P1539, DOI [10.1016-j.biortech.2008.07.064, 10.1016-j.biortcch.2008.07.064]; Esposito G, 2011, WASTE MANAGE, V31, P2527, DOI 10.1016-j.wasman.2011.07.024; Ferrer I, 2010, BIORESOURCE TECHNOL, V101, P2972, DOI 10.1016-j.biortech.2009.12.006; Kleerebezem R, 2006, WATER SCI TECHNOL, V54, P51, DOI 10.2166-wst.2006.525; Lubken M, 2007, WATER RES, V41, P4085, DOI 10.1016-j.watres.2007.05.061; Maroun R, 2007, ENVIRON SCI TECHNOL, V41, P6808, DOI 10.1021-es070686w; Mata-Alvarez J., 2003, BIOMETHANIZATION ORG; Nopharatana A, 2007, WASTE MANAGE, V27, P595, DOI 10.1016-j.wasman.2006.04.010; Page DI, 2008, WATER SCI TECHNOL, V58, P689, DOI 10.2166-wst.2008.678; Parker WJ, 2005, BIORESOURCE TECHNOL, V96, P1832, DOI 10.1016-j.biortech.2005.01.022; PAVLOSTATHIS SG, 1991, CRIT REV ENV CONTR, V21, P411; PERES CS, 1992, WATER SCI TECHNOL, V25, P285; Ramirez I, 2008, WATER SCI TECHNOL, V57, P265, DOI 10.2166-wst.2008.055; Sanders WTM, 2000, WATER SCI TECHNOL, V41, P17; Senturk E, 2010, J HAZARD MATER, V176, P843, DOI 10.1016-j.jhazmat.2009.11.113; Siedlecka EM, 2008, POL J ENVIRON STUD, V17, P351; Zhao BH, 2010, IND ENG CHEM RES, V49, P7193, DOI 10.1021-ie10018571

    No full text
The focus of this research is the translation analysis of colloquial expressions in the children’s storybook entitled The Secret Life of Ms Wiz by Terence Blacker. The objectives of this study are to find out the types of colloquial expression, to find out the translation techniques used by the translator to translate colloquial expression, and to know the effect of the translation techniques used on the quality of the translation in terms of accuracy and acceptability. This research used a descriptive-qualitative and quantitative method and was designed as a single-embedded case study. It used document and informant sources. Total sampling was applied to collect the data. The data were obtained by using content analysis and questionnaire. In content analysis, the researcher collected the data by selecting the dialogues among the characters containing colloquial expressions. The data found were 247 data. The form of questionnaire was a close-open ended. The questionnaire was distributed to three raters who are translation experts. The research findings from 247 data show that: (1) there are four types of colloquial exp ressions found in the children’s storybook. They are 45 data of single words, 2 data of clipped words, 191 data of contractions, and 9 data of verb-adverb combinations; (2) there are eleven translation techniques found in the children’s story book. They are adap tation (2 data), amplification (15 data), borrowing (12 data), calque (43 data), generalization (one datum), literal translation (27 data), modulation (12 data), reduction (137 data), deletion (15 data), transposition (29 data), and synonym (9 data); (3) the quality translation of colloquial expression in the children’s storybook, The Secret Life of Ms Wiz, are (a) from the accuracy point of view, there are 230 or 93.1% accurate data, 16 or 6.5% less accurate data, and one or 0.4% inaccurate datum. The average score of the mean for accuracy is 1.08 meaning that the translation is accurate; (b) from the acceptability point of view, 226 data or 91.5% are acceptable, 13 data or 5.3% are less acceptable, and 8 data or 3.2% are unacceptable. The average score of the mean for acceptability is 1.12 meaning that the translation is acceptable; (c) the most accurate technique is reduction which contributes the major data (132 data) of 230 accurate data. The least accurate technique is deletion which contributes one inaccurate datum of one inaccurate datum found; (d) the most acceptable technique is reduction which contributes the major data (135 data) of 226 acceptable data. The least acceptable technique is borrowing which contributes the major data (7 data) of 8 unacceptable data. This research can be used as an input for lecturers to give the understanding about colloquial expression to the students. This research is expected to give additional information for students, especially English Department students, about colloquial expression that can improve their knowledge. Hopefully, there will be further research of colloquial expression
