Bayesian parameter estimation on boson-star binary signals with a coherent inspiral template and spin-dependent quadrupolar corrections
Compact boson-star binaries are hypothetical sources for ground-based and space gravitational-wave detectors. Their signal would be a messenger for novel fundamental fields and could shed light on the dark matter. In this work, we further develop our analysis [Phys. Rev. D 102, 083002 (2020)], aimed at constraining the properties of these objects with future observations. We use a coherent waveform template for the inspiral stage of boson-star binaries with large quartic self-interactions, including tidal deformability and the nonlinear dependence of the quadrupole moments on the spin in terms of the fundamental couplings of the scalar field theory. Performing a Bayesian analysis, we investigate the ability of a thirdgeneration gravitational-wave detector such as the Einstein Telescope to distinguish these exotic sources from black holes and infer constraints on the fundamental couplings of the model
Direct effect of a Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone agonist on the growth of canine mammary tumour cells
Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist exert "in vivo" an inhibitory action on the growth of hormone-dependent canine mammary tumours (Lombardi et al. [1999] J. Vet. Pharmacol Ther. 22(1):56-61). The present experiments have been performed "in vitro" in order to investigate the mechanisms involved in this direct antiproliferative action of GnRH agonists. In particular, the aim was to study whether these compounds might exert their antiproliferative effect by interfering with the stimulatory action of epidermal growth factor (EGF). To this purpose, the effects of GnRH agonist, Goserelin (GnRH-A), on the mitogenic action of EGF, on EGF-activated intracellular signaling mechanisms (intracellular calcium and nitric oxide production) as well as on ATP induced cell proliferation and signalling, and on the binding of EGF receptors have been evaluated in primary culture of canine mammary tumour cells. The results of these "in vitro" studies show that GnRH-A counteracts the mitogenic action of EGF and ATP, decreases the EGF/ATP-induced calcium signalling and reduces EGF binding, probably by means of NO-induced [Ca2+]i downregulation. These data suggest that GnRH agonists may inhibit the proliferation of the tumour cells by interfering with the stimulatory action of EGF
Ranking Love Numbers for the Neutron Star Equation of State: The Need for Third-Generation Detectors
Gravitational-wave measurements of the tidal deformability in neutron-star binary coalescences can be used to infer the still unknown equation of state (EOS) of dense matter above the nuclear saturation density. By employing a Bayesian-ranking test, we quantify the ability of current and future gravitational-wave observations to discriminate among families of nuclear-physics based EOS which differ in particle content and ab initio microscopic calculations. While the constraining power of GW170817 is limited, we show that even twenty coalescences detected by LIGO-Virgo at design sensitivity are not enough to discriminate between EOS with similar softness but distinct microphysics. However, just a single detection with a third-generation detector such as the Einstein Telescope or Cosmic Explorer will rule out several families of EOS with very strong statistical significance and can discriminate among models which feature similar softness, hence, constraining the properties of nuclear matter to unprecedented levels
New SPECT and PET Radiopharmaceuticals for Imaging Inflammatory Diseases:A Meta-analysis of the Last 10 Years
Modem molecular nuclear medicine is rapidly developing in the field of imaging of chronic inflammatory diseases, and many new radiophamiaceuticals have been recently described and tested in animals and man. These can detect early pathophysiological changes before the development of anatomical changes and, often, before clinical onset of symptoms. This field includes new radiopharmaceuticals for SPECT and PET use to define new strategies for imaging immune cells as well as tissue modifications induced by the inflammatory process. In this review, we present the results of a meth-analysis based on radiopharmaceuticals (for SPECT or PET) that are not commercially available and that have been used, at least once, in humans in the last 10 years. Smarr formula for Lovelock black holes: A Lagrangian approach
The mass formula for black holes can be formally expressed in terms of a
Noether charge surface integral plus a suitable volume integral, for any
gravitational theory. The integrals can be constructed as an application
of Wald's formalism. We apply this formalism to compute the mass and the
Smarr formula for static Lovelock black holes. Finally, we propose a new
prescription for Wald's entropy in the case of Lovelock black holes,
which takes into account topological contributions to the entropy

Gene transfer technology in therapy: Current applications and future goals
Gene therapy has attracted much interest since the first submissions of phase I clinical trials in the early 1990s, for the treatment of inherited genetic diseases. Preliminary results were very encouraging and prompted many investigators to submit protocols for phase I and phase II clinical trials for the treatment of inherited genetic diseases and cancer. The possible application of gene transfer technology to treat AIDS, cardiopathies, and neurologic diseases is under evaluation. Some viral vectors have already been used to deliver HIV-1 subunits to immunize volunteers who are participating in the AIDS vaccine programs in the USA. However, gene delivery systems still need to be optimized in order to achieve effective therapeutic interventions. The purpose of this review is to summarize the latest achievements in improving gene delivery systems, their current application in preclinical studies and in therapy, and the most pressing issues that must be addressed in the area of vector design
