This contribution presents the results of an initial inquiry focused on the phenomenon of the great spread of everyday products shops owned by migrants. Field research was carried on on a wide city portion of the city centre of Naples aiming at analysing, in terms of opportunities and limitations, on the one hand, the implication of these businesses on local territorial dynamics; on the other hand, the role that the opening of these small businesses has on individual migratory paths
The cityscape of Naples is a kaleidoscope in continuous transformation. Assuming that the presence of migrant traders – shopkeepers and street vendors – is a privileged point of observation, we carried out an inquiry on 6500 citizens with migration background, through a GIS also. The source of the data that we collected and processed come from the archives of the Chamber of Commerce of Naples. The reference period of the data is from January 1900 to December 2020.
The study on nationality of the business owners, locations and enrolment period of the activities reveals something about how migrants play a role within the social division of space connected. To this end, we looked at the main concentrations at different scales: from the municipal scale, passing through the hamlet one, to the street level
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Radiotherapy for the treatment of thyroid eye diseaseâa prospective comparison: Is orbital radiotherapy a suitable alternative to steroids?
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: To evaluate the efficacy of orbital radiotherapy (OR) for
the treatment of thyroid eye disease (TED).
METHODS: Thirty-five consecutive patients with active TED with contraindications
to steroid therapy received a course of OR. Bilateral retrobulbar irradiation was
performed with a total dose of 20 Gy. 7-points clinical activity score (7-CAS),
ocular motility, visual acuity (VA), exophthalmos and eyelid retraction were
prospectively evaluated at 3, 6 and 12 months and compared with baseline data.
RESULTS: There was a statistically significant improvement in 7-CAS at 3, 6 and
12 months post-treatment (p < 0.05). Ocular motility disturbances improved at 6
and 12 months (p < 0.05). Visual acuity remained stable; there was no significant
change in exophthalmos (mean 24 mm, SD 3 mm) or eyelid retraction (marginal
reflex distance mean 6 mm, SD 1.5 mm) during the follow-up period. No side
effects were registered.
CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that OR might be effective in reducing 7-CAS and
ocular motility disturbances. No significant improvement in proptosis or eyelid
retraction should be expected from this treatment. OR might be considered a
suitable alternative treatment in TED for patients who cannot tolerate steroids
Normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) models for modern radiation therapy
Mathematical models of normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) able to robustly predict radiation-induced morbidities (RIM) play an essential role in the identification of a personalized optimal plan, and represent the key to maximizing the benefits of technological advances in radiation therapy (RT). Most modern RT techniques pose, however, new challenges in estimating the risk of RIM. The aim of this report is to schematically review NTCP models in the framework of advanced radiation therapy techniques. Issues relevant to hypofractionated stereotactic body RT and ion beam therapy are critically reviewed. Reirradiation scenarios for new or recurrent malignances and NTCP are also illustrated. A new phenomenological approach to predict RIM is suggested
Statistical Mechanics of Transfer Learning in Fully Connected Networks in the Proportional Limit
Transfer learning (TL) is a well-established machine learning technique to boost the generalization performance on a specific (target) task using information gained from a related (source) task, and it crucially depends on the ability of a network to learn useful features. Leveraging recent analytical progress in the proportional regime of deep learning theory (i.e., the limit where the size of the training set P and the size of the hidden layers N are taken to infinity keeping their ratio alpha = P/N finite), in this Letter we develop a novel single-instance Franz-Parisi formalism that yields an effective theory for TL in fully connected neural networks. Unlike the (lazy-training) infinite-width limit, where TL is ineffective, we demonstrate that in the proportional limit TL occurs due to a renormalized source-target kernel that quantifies their relatedness and determines whether TL is beneficial for generalization
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
