Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

No full textAu Canada, la problématique de l'articulation des responsabilités professionnelles et familiales retient l'attention des chercheurs depuis de nombreuses années et s'accompagne de la prise de conscience sociale et politique des difficultés rencontrées par les parents, en particulier par les femmes, à arrimer la vie familiale et la vie professionnelle. Cette thèse de démographie vise à accroître notre compréhension de cette dynamique par l'adoption d'une perspective analytique intégrant systématiquement la dimension temporelle. Plus spécifiquement, l'étude des transformations dans les ajustements de la vie professionnelle des Canadiennes en fonction de leur vie familiale est au coeur de l'analyse. Celle-ci s'appuie sur l'approche biographique et l'utilisation de méthodes d'analyse des transitions appliquées aux données rétrospectives de l'Enquête sociale générale sur la fàmille de 2001 et aux données prospectives de l'Enquête sur la dynamique du travail et du revenu (1993-2003). Les principaux résultats des trois articles formant le corps de la thèse sont les suivants. Nous mettons tout d'abord en évidence la transformation des modèles d'ajustement de la vie professionnelle des femmes durant la deuxième moitié du 20e siècle. Nous montrons la nette différentiation, au fil des générations, dans les trajectoires professionnelles des Canadiennes nées entre 1937 et 1976. En particulier, la place grandissante qu'occupe l'emploi atypique dans les processus d'insertion ou de réinsertion des générations successives sur le marché du travail, de même que l'ampleur croissante de l'instabilité de la vie professionnelle associée àla conjoncture économique, sont révélées. Par ailleurs, la famille demeure pour les Canadiennes un facteur décisif de la discontinuité de la vie professionnelle. Nous observons également des différences importantes à tous ces égards entre les femmes et les hommes. Nous cherchons ensuite à circonscrire la place de la famille dans l'évolution, au fil des générations, des parcours professionnels des Canadiennes en accordant un intérêt particulier au mariage et à la maternité. Dans le cas du mariage, nous
observons une nette augmentation au fil des générations de la propension des femmes mariées à entrer ou à retourner rapidement dans le marché du travail. À un point tel
qu'au sein des plus jeunes générations, aucune différence significative n'est constatée dans les comportements d'insertion et de réinsertion dans l'emploi des femmes
mariées, comparativement aux femmes sans conjoint. Toutefois, le mariage est encore susceptible d'accélérer le rythme d'interruption de l'activité professionnelle auprès des femmes des générations plus récentes. L'effet de la maternité sur les principales étapes du déroulement de la vie professionnelle des femmes est également loin de demeurer stable au fil des générations. Enfin, nous nous intéressons aux réalités contemporaines des ajustements du
parcours professionnel des Canadiennes en fonction de leur parcours familial autour d'un point tournant de leur vie, soit l'arrivée d'un enfant. Nous constatons que les
responsabilités familiales et professionnelles des mères sont rapidement. combinées après la naissance d'un enfant durant les années 1990 et le début des années 2000. Nous mettons également en évidence la polarisation nette· du comportement professionnel des mères en fonction notamment de leur situation familiale et des caractéristiques de leur participation au marché du travail avant la naissance de
l'enfant. Enfin, les analyses font ressortir que l'effet de certaines variables varie différemment selon que les mères effectuent le retour sur le marché du travail à plein
temps ou à temps partiel. Ces résultats illustrent la pertinence de prendre en compte le régime d'emploi dans l'analyse du comportement professionnel des femmes. après
l'arrivée d'un enfant, de manière à cerner plus finement les stratégies d'ajustement professionnel que les mères adoptent au fil du temps en fonction de leurs responsabilités professionnelles et familiales The issue of balancing work and family life holds attention of researchers for several years in Canada, accompanied by the social and political awareness of the difficulties met by the parents, women in particular, to manage farnily life and work life. This thesis brings a better understanding of this dynarnic by the adoption of an analytical perspective integrating systematically the temporal dimension. More specifically, the study of the transformations in the adjustments of working life of Canadian women in relation to their family life is the core of the analysis. This one leans on the use of methods of event history analysis applied to the retrospective data on family collected by the 2001 General Social Survey and to the household panel data from the Survey of Labour and Income Dynarnics (1993-2003). The main results of the three articles forming the body of the thesis are the following ones. First, we bring to light the transformations of the models of adjustment of women's work patterns during the second half of the 20th century. We show a clear differentiation in the work histories of generations of women born between 1937 and 1976, particularly the growing place that atypical employment occupies in the processes of entry or return into labour market of the diverse generations, and the increasing place of the instability of labour force participation associated with the economic situation. Besides, the farnily remains a decisive factor in the discontinuity of female work trajectories. We also observe important differences between women and men. Next, we define the place of the farnily in the evolution of employment dynamics over these generations of women born between 1937 and 1976, by giving a particular attention to marri age and motherhood. In the case of marriage, we observed a c1ear increase over the generations of the likelihood of married women to enter and quickly return to the labour market. The increase isobserved to such an extent that among younger generations, there is no significant difference for these work transitions between married and single women. However, marri age still appear to accelerate the pace of work interruption among the younger generations of women. Also, the impact of motherhood on the key phases of a woman's career is far from being stable over generations. Finally, we study the recent adjustments in the work patterns of women according to their family histories around a turning point of their life, namely the birth of a child. We observe that the family and professional responsibilities of mothers are quickly combined after the birth of a child during the 1990s and the beginning of 2000s. We also bring to light the c1ear polarization of the professional behaviour of mothers in particular in relation to their family situation and the characteristics of their participation in the labour market before the birth of the child. Lastly, the analyses show that the effect of certain variables varies according to whether the mothers make a full-time or part-time return into, the labour market. These results illustrate the relevance of taking into account the number of working hours in the anal ysis of women's labour market transitions after the birth of a child, in order to better grasp the strategies of work adaptation that mothers adopt as their professional and family responsibilities evolve
