Pietro Verri’s Contribution to the Economic Theory of the 18th Century: Commercial Society, Civil Society and Governance of the Economy
'Count Pietro Verri (1728-97) - Schumpeter writes (History, p. 178) - - would have to be included in any list of the greatest economists'. Within the Milanese school, he certainly stands out, alongside with Cesare Beccaria, during one of the most interesting periods from a history of analysis point of view. Luigi Cossa's famous introduction to the study of political economy rates Pietro Verri to be inferior to Beccaria in ingenuity and scientific cultivation, but greatly to be ahead of him as an economist.1 This judgement by Cossa, in particular, seems to echo the relative position of the two men in the history of ideas, particularly after Beccaria's rise to fame with a book - On crimes and punishments - which had in fact been largely inspired by Verri himself and defended by him.2 It is proposed in the present paper to revisit some of the basic tenets of Pietro Verri's political economy, with more in view than dwell on specific intuitions and theorems: namely relate those to Verri's own - quite original - conception of the economy. The scholarly work of Pietro Verri - with a special reference to his Meditazioni sulla economia politica of 1771 - provides the first systematic contribution stemming from the quarters of Lombard enlightenment in the field of political economy, especially so if one considers that Cesare Beccaria's parallel work - namely his Elementi di economia pubblica, conceived and drafted at the same time as Verri's Meditazioni - would only be published posthumously several years later. From the vantage point afforded by Verri's political economy, we gain a considerably attractive view of the most significant elements and characteristic concepts of Lombard enlightenment during the latter half of the 18th century; Verri, moreover, as we shall see, builds on a number of them in a new and original way. This paper is aimed at discussing Verri's political economy mainly along two distinct, but related, lines. In the first place the conception of commercial society is considered such as it is treated by the author particularly in his Meditazioni. In this perspective the analysis of such issues as competition and the market or money and taxation occupy a central place. Secondly it will be necessary to emphasise that Verri's approach has little to do either with forms of pure economics on one side - largely yet to be born throughout the 18th century - or, on the other side, with such conceptions of the polis - contrariwise well alive among his own contemporaries - as are founded on a sovereign authority conceived to be situated above the law. What Verri's political economy ultimately amounts to is an economic conception of civil society. The latter has natural strong connections with his own fact-mindedness - emphasised by Schumpeter - as well as with his deep practical involvement in administrative affairs and in the reforming process taking place during the latter half of the 18th century in Milan. In our view, a thorough investigation along the mentioned lines is the precondition for an understanding of the intellectual stature and of the scholarly contribution of Pietro Verri. His main ground is distinctly analytical and only by appreciating his analysis is it possible to shed light on the meaning and intellectual significance also of his practical contributions. Moreover Verri's pronouncements on the criticism of despotic government, the relevance of intermediate powers or bodies and on multiple levels of governance will be examined in a new and original light, showing how close they are to the gist of his analysis.
About twin primes and distribution of primes
This paper give us a demonstration of twin primes conjecture using approximation of function (iupsilon) that we introduce in section 6. Section 1-5 give us introduction to terminology and a clarification on (iupsilon) terms. In particular section
5 is really important because of its Lemma. Section 7 reassume foregoing explanations and it give us two theorems and one corollary;the theorem 7.2 give us exact approximation of twin primes counting function
Feminist Objectivity in Philosophy of Science: a Crossroad between Politics and Epistemology
Amphiglena nisidensis Giangrande & Putignano & Licciano & Gambi 2021, sp. nov.
Amphiglena nisidensis sp. nov. ( Figs 8, 9) Material examined. Holotype (MNCN 16.01 /18903): Italy: Nisida Island (Naples), 40°47’31.52”N 14° 9’47.29”E, 14 November 2011; 2 m depth. Collected on hard bottom with algal cover, mainly Halopteris scoparia. Paratypes: MNCN 16.01 /18904: 6 specimens from the same locality and date as the holotype; 22 specimens from the same locality and date as the holotype PCZL S.A. 4.1. Most material fixed in formalin 4% (including holotype and paratypes) and preserved in ethanol 70%; some material fixed in ethanol 95 %. Description. Holotype complete with eight thoracic and 28 abdominal chaetigers. Body length 2.5 mm, with crown 1.8 mm long, and 0.4 mm wide. Body light brown coloured on ventral side and with flattened abdomen (Fig. 8A). Crown with five pairs of radioles with 12 pairs of pinnules of medium length each, arranged in two longitudinal rows with a small space gap between the pinnules of the same pair, and with space increasing at the base of the radiole. The pinnules appear longer in median position where they measure 1/4 of the total radiolar length, and becoming considerably shorter towards the end of the radiole. Tip of radiole long, slender and pointed (Fig. 8C). Dorsal lips measuring 1/5 of the total radiolar length.Anterior peristomial ring not visible. Posterior peristomial ring higher ventrally with a mid-ventral incision where low ventral basal flanges attach, extending as prominent ridges from base of ventral-most radioles (Fig. 8D, E). Small brown peristomial eyes present. Pygidial eyes present as clusters of red spots on lateral margins of pygidium. Thorax longer than wide. First thoracic chaetiger with only 3 chaetae similar in shape to the superior chaetae of the following chaetigers. From the second to the eighth thoracic chaetiger, 5 uncini on each torus. Thoracic uncini with rounded and flattened breast, with four rows of teeth above main fang, and with handles long approximately 1/3 of the total uncinus length (0.35) so considered between medium and short length (Fig. 9A). Companion chaetae present, with straight shaft and long mucro (Fig. 9B). Thoracic chaetae from second to eighth chaetigers, number 4, of which one superior broadly-hooded chaeta (Fig. 9D) and three paleate chaetae in inferior row with mucro long as the hood (Fig. 9E). Abdominal uncini in number of 3, with similar-sized small teeth above the main fang, higher than the thoracic one and with short handle (Fig. 9C). Three abdominal neurochaetae thin and broadly hooded, similar to paleate of the thorax but longer in the first abdominal segments (Fig. 9G) and becoming longer and more geniculate starting from mid abdomen (Fig. 9H). Spermathechae present brown/red coloured. Staining pattern. In both thorax and abdomen stain only ventral shields. Peristomium, thorax and abdomen showing an intense colouration in the central part, but with a pattern covering most of the segment width (Fig. 8B). Variation. Individuals have eight thoracic chaetigers and up to 31 abdominal chaetigers. Mean body length of 1.65 mm and mean crown length of 1.5 mm. (Table 1). Remarks. The material from Nisida is very similar morphologically to A. pithecusensis sp. nov. previously described. The specimens from Nisida, however, appeared highly flattened in the abdomen and with wider bands of stained tissue as wide as the thoracic segment. Moreover, specimens have a larger ratio between body and crown (Table 1), with a longer and slender tip of radioles and pinnules arranged in pairs, not alternating along the radiolar length. Thoracic uncini are also similar in the length of the handles but with a slender main fang. The main difference is, however in the shape of the ventral margin of the peristomial ring showing an incision without separated margins, and with a lower basal flange. Ventral peristomial ring appears similar to A. bondi Capa & Rouse, 2007, from which it is distinguished by the short handle of thoracic uncini, and by the number of radioles. Etymology. Named from type locality, the Island of Nisida, located between the Gulf of Naples and the Gulf of Pozzuoli. Distribution and Ecology. Distributed on hard bottoms with algal cover. This species belongs to the same group of similar taxa that includes specimens from Ischia vent and non-vent’s areas, except the San Pietro site.Published as part of Giangrande, Adriana, Putignano, Matteo, Licciano, Margherita & Gambi, Maria Cristina, 2021, The Pandora's box: Morphological diversity within the genus Amphiglena Claparède, 1864 (Sabellidae, Annelida) in the Mediterranean Sea, with description of nine new species, pp. 201-239 in Zootaxa 4949 (2) on pages 212-214, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.4949.2.1, http://zenodo.org/record/463612
New Perspectives of S-Adenosylmethionine (SAMe) Applications to Attenuate Fatty Acid-Induced Steatosis and Oxidative Stress in Hepatic and Endothelial Cells
S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) is an endogenous methyl donor derived from ATP and methionine that has pleiotropic functions. Most SAMe is synthetized and consumed in the liver, where it acts as the main methylating agent and in protection against the free radical toxicity. Previous studies have shown that the administration of SAMe as a supernutrient exerted many beneficial effects in various tissues, mainly in the liver. In the present study, we aimed to clarify the direct effects of SAMe on fatty acid-induced steatosis and oxidative stress in hepatic and endothelial cells. Hepatoma FaO cells and endothelial HECV cells exposed to a mixture of oleate/palmitate are reliable models for hepatic steatosis and endothelium dysfunction, respectively. Our findings indicate that SAMe was able to significantly ameliorate lipid accumulation and oxidative stress in hepatic cells, mainly through promoting mitochondrial fatty acid entry for β-oxidation and external triglyceride release. SAMe also reverted both lipid accumulation and oxidant production (i.e., ROS and NO) in endothelial cells. In conclusion, these outcomes suggest promising beneficial applications of SAMe as a nutraceutical for metabolic disorders occurring in fatty liver and endothelium dysfunction

TEN CONTEMPORARY REVIEWS OF BOOKS ON ART AND ARCHAEOLOGY BY GIOVAN PIETRO BELLORI IN THE GIORNALE DE’ LETTERATI, 1670-1680, NO. 2 A review of Pietro Santi Bartoli’s album of engravings after the spiral relief band of Trajan’s column in Rome, which includes Giovan Pietro Bellori’s translation of Alfons Chacon’s explications of the reliefs, first published in 1576. Chacon’s commentary was amended and corrected by Bellori at very many points. Engravings of relevant coins and inscriptions were added to the work. During the decade 1670-1680 ten reviews of books by Giovan Pietro Bellori that had appeared in the same years (1669-1680) were published in the Giornale de' letterati in Rome. These include Bellori's famous book of late sixteenth-seventeenth-century artists' 'Lives' (Vite de' pittori) as well as a number of significant archaeological publications treating numismatics, glyptics, sculpture, painting and Roman topography. Reviews and articles appeared in the Giornale unsigned, thus their author or authors cannot be determined with certainty. The discussions of Bellori's works are lengthy and penetrating; they underline the remarkable position he had attained in the world of seventeenth-century archaeological scholarship. The ten reviews will appear in separate instalments of FONTES (Bellori, 1-10)
Il sangue e l’oro. Venere gelosa come dramatis persona nelle Metamorfosi di Apuleio
The Venus that the reader meets in the Metamorphoses is the blending of several epic and drama characters who share a series of negative founding emotions: among others, jealousy. This work will examine these theatrical figures and the kind of jealousy – that of a goddess, of a woman, or a mother – that the author highlights each time. Furthermore, partly by analyzing the schemes of literary allusion, the paper will dwell upon the topic of repressed identity and upon the wounds that jealousy can cause within a character. Actually, among all the others, it is specifically this emotion that enables Apuleius to bring modernity and innovation into the myth of Aphrodite
