Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reducing unnecessary right ventricular pacing with the managed ventricular pacing mode in patients with sinus node disease and AV block
Frequent and unnecessary right ventricular apical pacing increases
the risk of atrial fibrillation or congestive heart failure. We evaluated a new
pacing algorithm, managed ventricular pacing (MVP) which automatically changes
modes between AAI/R and DDD/R in patients receiving pacemakers for symptomatic
bradycardia. METHODS: Patients were randomized to the MVP mode or DDD/R mode for
1 month and then crossed over to the alternate pacing modality for an additional
month. On completion of the crossover phase, the pacing mode selected was
individualized and patients were followed for an additional 4 months. RESULTS:
Of the 129 patients who successfully completed the crossover study, the
cumulative percent ventricular pacing was significantly reduced in the MVP mode
(median 1.4%) compared to the DDD/R mode (median 89.6%, 94.0% relative
reduction; 95% CI 89.3-98.8%, P < 0.001). Patients with sinus node disease (SND,
n = 51) when compared to patients with AV block (AVB) (n = 68) experienced a
greater reduction in ventricular pacing with the MVP mode compared to the DDD/R
mode (median relative reduction 99.1%; 95% CI 97.5-99.9% vs median relative
reduction 60.1%; 95% CI 16.7-93.9% P < 0.001). The reduced percent ventricular
pacing during MVP was sustained over longer term follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: The
majority of patients with a bradycardia indication for cardiac pacing do not
require ventricular pacing most of the time. The MVP mode significantly reduces
unnecessary right ventricular pacing. This mode benefits even patients with
intermittent AVB and is sustained over longer term follow-u
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Same-day discharge vs. overnight stay following catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation: a comprehensive review and meta-analysis by the European Heart Rhythm Association Health Economics Committee
Aims Same-day discharge (SDD) after catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF) may address the growing socio-economic health burden of the increasing demand for interventional AF therapies. This systematic review and meta-analysis analyses the current evidence on clinical outcomes in SDD after AF ablation compared with overnight stay (ONS). Methods A systematic search of the PubMed database was performed. Pre-defined endpoints were complications at short-term and results (24–96 h) and 30-day post-discharge, re-hospitalization, and/or emergency room (ER) visits at 30-day post-discharge, and 30-day mortality. Twenty-four studies (154 716 patients) were included. Random-effects models were applied for meta-analyses of pooled endpoint prevalence in the SDD cohort and for comparison between SDD and ONS cohorts. Pooled estimates for complications after SDD were low both for short-term [2%; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1–5%; I2: 89%) and 30-day follow-up (2%; 95% CI: 1–4%; I2: 91%). There was no significant difference in complications rates between SDD and ONS [short-term: risk ratio (RR): 1.62; 95% CI: 0.52–5.01; I2: 37%; 30 days: RR: 0.65; 95% CI: 0.42–1.00; I2: 95%). Pooled rates of re-hospitalization/ER visits after SDD were 4% (95% CI: 1–10%; I2: 96%) with no statistically significant difference between SDD and ONS (RR: 0.86; 95% CI: 0.58–1.27; I2: 61%). Pooled 30-day mortality was low after SDD (0%; 95% CI: 0–1%; I2: 33%). All studies were subject to a relevant risk of bias, mainly due to study design. Conclusion In this meta-analysis including a large contemporary cohort, SDD after AF ablation was associated with low prevalence of post-discharge complications, re-hospitalizations/ER visits and mortality, and a similar risk compared with ONS. Due to limited quality of current evidence, further prospective, randomized trials are needed to confirm safety of SDD and define patient- and procedure-related prerequisites for successful and safe SDD strategies

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
