Slow time scales in a dense vibrofluidized granular material
Modeling collective motion in nonconservative systems, such as granular materials, is difficult since a general microscopic-to-macroscopic approach is not available: there is no Hamiltonian, no known stationary densities in phase space, and not a known small set of relevant variables. Phenomenological coarse-grained models are a good alternative, provided that one has identified a few slow observables and collected a sufficient amount of data for their dynamics. Here we study the case of a vibrofluidized dense granular material. The experimental study of a tracer, dispersed into the media, showed evidence of many time scales: Fast ballistic, intermediate caged, slow superdiffusive, and very slow diffusive. A numerical investigation has demonstrated that a tracer's superdiffusion is related to slow rotating drifts of the granular medium. Here we offer a deeper insight into the slow scales of the granular medium, and we propose a phenomenological model for such a "secular"dynamics. Based upon the model for the granular medium, we also introduce a model for the tracer (fast and slow) dynamics, which consists in a stochastic system of equations for three coupled variables, and is therefore more refined and successful than previous models
Nonlinear Response of Inertial Tracers in Steady Laminar Flows: Differential and Absolute Negative Mobility
We study the mobility and the diffusion coefficient of an inertial tracer advected by a two-dimensional incompressible laminar flow, in the presence ofthermal noise and under the actionof an external force. We show, with extensive numerical simulations, that the force-velocity rela-tion for the tracer, in the nonlinear regime, displays complex and rich behaviors, including negativedifferential and absolute mobility. These effects rely upon asubtle coupling between inertia andapplied force which induce the tracer to persist in particular regions of phase space with a velocityopposite to the force. The relevance of this coupling is revisited in the framework of non-equilibriumresponse theory, applying a generalized Einstein relationto our system. The possibility of experi-mental observation of these results is also discussed
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Enhancing Object Detection Robustness for Cross-Depiction Through Neural Style Transfer
Modern neural networks models for computer vision are trained on millions of images. The idea is that models are able to increase generalization when the dataset contains well diversified images, e.g. with varied illumination and environmental conditions of the same objects. Generalization is particularly relevant in object detection, especially for what concerns the cross-depiction problem. In this work we explore the use of Neural Style Transfer as a novel technique to morph the original data, with the aim to enhance model generalization. To verify the effect on performances for object detection models, we selected the Faster R-CNN model to be applied on the Pascal VOC 2012 dataset. A number of tests were performed through style variations on images and by tuning Neural Style Transfer parameters to maintain the content of the original images. The experiments showed promising results, which effectively provide a foundation for future studies on cross-depiction via Neural Style Transfer
