La Quadriennale di Roma. Dall’Ente autonomo alla Fondazione. Una riflessione sulla trasformazione.
Il progetto di ricerca propone l’analisi dei meccanismi, dello sviluppo delle strutture, dei ruoli degli organi, dei partecipanti, della sua attività negli ultimi trenta anni, di una delle rassegne più importanti d'Italia: la Quadriennale di Roma – la cui prima edizione è del 1931.La tesi ha per titolo La Quadriennale di Roma. Dall’Ente autonomo alla Fondazione. Una riflessione sulla trasformazione ed è composta da due parti. La prima, la Parte A, offre uno sguardo contestuale della Quadriennale di Roma. Abbiamo individuato e analizzato quattro contesti che influenzavano, ed ancora influenzano, il funzionamento della Quadriennale: il contesto storico, il contesto legislativo, il contesto politico ed il contesto artistico. La Parte B è il vero cuore della tesi ed è concentrata sulle attività della Quadriennale di Roma nel periodo 1986-2008.
Il contesto storico riguarda innanzitutto gli inizi della Quadriennale di Roma, a partire dalla deliberazione n. 3893 dell’ 11 maggio 1927 del Governatore di Roma, Istituzione delle Esposizioni Quadriennali d'Arte Nazionale con la quale il Governatorato di Roma decideva di istituire questo dispositivo di mostra periodica, che si sarebbe mantenuto con le stesse modalità fino alla X Quadriennale. In questa parte della tesi è analizzato il ruolo di personaggi nodali per l’esposizione, come Giuseppe Bottai, il conte Enrico di San Martino Valperga, Cipriano Efisio Oppo e Antonio Maraini; osservata l’influenza della vita politica sul funzionamento delle istituzioni artistiche; e descritto il rapporto della Quadriennale di Roma con la Biennale di Venezia negli anni trenta/quaranta, anche per quello che è relativo alle loro radici comuni ed al ruolo della Quadriennale nel contesto artistico nazionale ed internazionale (quale ancora in quel periodo era). Sono state poi ovviamente studiate le strategie curatoriali – o sarebbe meglio dire ‘protocuratoriali’ – e le opere selezionate ed esposte nelle quadriennali. Per questo scopo, oltre ai cataloghi e ai volumi citati, abbiamo consultato i comunicati stampa, le delibere, i verbali e vari altri documenti conservati presso l’Archivio Storico della Fondazione La Quadriennale di Roma e presso l’Archivio Storico delle Arti Contemporanee (a Venezia).
Il secondo contesto preso in esame, utile per capire le dinamiche delle attività della Quadriennale, è quello legislativo, codificato nei tre statuti della Quadriennale (1937, 2001 e 2013). In questa sezione vengono identificati i compiti di tutti gli organi della Quadriennale. Questi ultimi comprendono il Consiglio di Amministrazione, il Presidente, il Presidente Onorario, il Segretario Generale, il Direttore Generale ed i Revisori dei conti.
Il terzo contesto è quello storico, per il quale ci siamo focalizzati sulla politica in generale e sulla politica culturale in atto in Italia negli anni ottanta/novanta;e sui complessi rapporti tra il Comune di Roma e la Quadriennale a metà degli anni ottanta – il periodo dal quale comincia il nostro interesse per le attività della Quadriennale. Le fonti per queste brevi analisi sono i volumi di Simona Colarizi,Storia del novecento italiano. Cent’anni di entusiasmo, di paure, di speranze; di Paul Ginsborg, L’Italia del tempo presente. Famiglia, società civile, Stato 1980-1996;e di Gianluca Bonaiuti, Peripezie del male minore. Cronaca di un decennio (1985-1995), pubblicato nel volume Espresso arte oggi in Italia. Invece le riflessioni sulle influenze politiche verso la cultura dagli anni novanta in poi, soprattutto verso la vita della Quadriennale, sono integrate in ogni capitolo dedicato alle singole edizioni delle quadriennali.
Il quarto contesto nel quale la Quadriennale opera è quello artistico. Questa parte della tesi ha l’intento di ricordare le correnti dell’arte contemporanea dagli anni ottanta sino ad oggi, focalizzandosi in particolare sulla presenza/assenza di loro rappresentanti nelle Quadriennali tra la XI e la XV, nel periodo 1986-2008. In questo spazio identifichiamo in breve le nuove strategie artistiche di quegli anni e la vita artistica nei centri di Roma e Milano. Riflettiamo inoltre sulle grandi mostre periodiche, sulla loro origine e sul loro vecchio e nuovo ruolo; e ricordiamo inoltre alcune mostre influenti italiane ed internazionali che ebbero luogo dagli anni ottanta in avanti.
La Parte B, che segue a quella sino ad ora analizzata, è il vero nodo della tesi, ed è concentrata sulle attività della Quadriennale di Roma nel periodo 1986-2008, e soprattutto sulle cinque Quadriennali che vanno dall’XI alla XV. Questa sezione è introdotta da una ricognizione del lungo periodo di transito tra la X e l’XI Quadriennale. Ad ogni singola Quadriennale è dedicato poi un capitolo, suddiviso in sottocapitoli che seguono in ogni capitolo un ordine simile: sono introdotti da una premessa metodologica, e poi proseguono con l’analisi degli obiettivi della Quadriennale, con l’identificazione degli incarichi (del Presidente, del Segretario Generale, del Consiglio di Amministrazione e delle Commissioni che invitavano gli artisti), ed infine con un’indagine sui rapporti della Quadriennale con il Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali e con il Comune di Roma. Abbiamo dedicato poi, in questa parte, un’analisi approfondita alle differenti sezioni delle varie Quadriennali, presentando un’analisi dei lavori esposti ed anche una riflessione sulla posizione degli artisti che esponevano alla Quadriennale nella scena dell’arte contemporanea. Abbiamo riportato le informazioni concernenti le vendite delle opere esposte nelle Quadriennali. Quasi in conclusione abbiamo analizzato le opinioni sulle esposizioni quadriennali espresse nella stampa professionale e generica; ed alla fine del capitolo abbiamo posto una valutazione conclusiva della mostra. Brevemente abbiamo anche descritto le più importanti mostre parallele organizzate dalla Quadriennale all’estero o in Italia, con la collaborazione di altre istituzioni. È stata esaminata la funzione dell’Archivio Biblioteca della Quadriennale e le sue attività. L’ultimo capitolo è dedicato infine all’analisi comparativa della Quadriennale di Roma con l’unica altra mostra periodica nazionale, nota a livello internazionale: la Whitney Biennale statunitense. Entrambe le mostre sono state fondate all’incirca nello stesso periodo, negli anni trenta, con uno scopo uguale: quello di promuovere l’arte nazionale (italiana e americana). Nel confronto ci soffermiamo sulle somiglianze e sulle differenze tra le due esposizioni.
Come fonti per la Parte B sono stati usati i cataloghi delle Quadriennali, la documentazione sulle esposizioni reperibile presso l’Archivio storico della Quadriennale (i singoli fascicoli che si trovano in esso, dedicati alla documentazione degli artisti), e i documenti interni collocati nella Fondazione La Quadriennale di Roma. Sono stati consultati inoltre i cataloghi di diverse altre mostre degli artisti partecipanti alle Quadriennali, delle monografie, alcune enciclopedie, la letteratura sulla teoria dell’arte contemporanea, e l’ampia rassegna stampa sulle Quadriennali, conservata presso l’Archivio storico della Quadriennale di Roma, e composta dai contributi presentati nelle riviste “Artforum”, “Flash Art”, “Arte e Critica”, “Exibart”, “Mousse”, “Tema Celeste” e nei maggiori quotidiani nazionali come “La Repubblica”, il “Corriere della Sera”, “Il Messaggero” e altri. Per ricostruire la storia, e soprattutto gli allestimenti delle esposizioni quadriennali, sono state molto utili numerose consultazioni con i professionisti interni operanti nella Quadriennale: in particolare quelle con Assunta Porciani, responsabile dell’Archivio storico, e con Federica Guida dell’Ufficio mostre della Fondazione La Quadriennale di Roma.
L’ultima parte della tesi contiene le interviste ai personaggi importanti della Quadriennale: i presidenti, i consiglieri, i commissari e gli artisti partecipanti, ed anche con un ex-assessore alle politiche culturali e alla comunicazione del Comune di Roma. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
