Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

Get PDF“How do you grieve a number?” – Unsuccessful Grieving in Jess Walter’s The Zero. Accountability and grief, assuming different forms and accommodating a variety of (sometimes antithetical) approaches, seem to be the dominants shaping 9/11 fiction and, consequently, the attendant criticism. Grief is a central theme to Jess Walter’s The Zero, examined in various manifestations, ranging from public to private, from counterfeit to genuine. The claim of this paper is that The Zero explores alternatives of grief only to invite the thought that the work of mourning, in a traditionally ‘successful’ sense, is no longer possible post-9/11.
REZUMAT. “Cum deplângem un număr?” – Eșuarea travaliului de doliu în romanul The Zero de Jess Walter. Luând diverse forme și permițând o plajă largă de abordări, uneori chiar antitetice, identificarea responsabililor și gestionarea suferinței par a fi dominantele care modelează proza despre atacurile teroriste de la 11 septembrie și, implicit, critica aferentă. Raportarea la suferință și doliu este tema centrală a romanului The Zero de Jess Walter, examinată în multiplele-i manifestări, traversând spațiul public și spațiul privat, teritorii ale superficialității, dar și zone restrânse de autenticitate. În acest context, lucrarea de față susține că romanul The Zero explorează alternative de raportare la suferință și doliu pentru a lansa ideea că travaliul de doliu, în accepțiunea tradițională a succesului acestui proces, nu mai este posibil în lumea de după 11 septembrie.

No full text“What is the Enlightenment?” is one of the most significant questions ever asked, a question that, in many ways, has shaped the world we live in. Either blaming or celebrating the movement, the answers to this question have attempted to contribute to the understanding of the modern world for more than two centuries now. The question started to infiltrate the European political and philosophical thought in the seventeenth century, although it received full articulation only in the late eighteenth century, when it engendered a spirited discussion about what had already been perceived as a decisive shift in Europe’s sense of itself.
The late eighteenth-century debates on the changes brought about by the enlightened age stem from German soil and are notoriously associated with Berlinische Monatsschrift, the magazine that launched the challenging invitation of answering the question “What is Enlightenment?” in 1784. The question then produced two of the movement’s best known descriptions, by Moses Mendelssohn and Immanuel Kant respectively, the latter being influenced by David Hume and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Although Kant’s essay “An Answer to the Question: What Is Enlightenment?” has arguably remained the most prominent and influential, the last decades of the eighteenth century benefited from the contributions of several other thinkers who insisted on aspects that would become the tenets of the Enlightenment, namely the public use of reason, freedom of thought and expression, education, progress, the distinctive engagement with religion and faith, political awareness and revolutionary drives, all of them meant to improve the human condition

Get PDFReversing absence. The Exploration of Memory in The Yellow Birds by Kevin Powers. The Yellow Birds has been acclaimed as one of the best contemporary novels on war. It builds on the recollections of John Bartle, a soldier who strives to cope with the death of Murph, his comrade-in-arms, by revisiting episodes that took place during deployment and by probing his own level of culpability, of moral and psychological weariness, after the return home. Remembrance is central to the narrative, and therefore the main concern of this paper is to look into the multifaceted exploration of memory as a means of creating a space for reconciliation with the past and of coming to terms with traumatic events.
REZUMAT. Explorarea memoriei în Păsările galbene de Kevin Powers. Păsările glbene de Kevin Powers este considerat printe cele mai bine scrise romane contemporane de război. Romanul se conturează în jurul amintirilor lui John Bartle, soldat care caută strategii de acceptare a morții lui Murph, camaradul său de arme, atât prin reexaminarea unor episoade ce s-au petrecut pe front, cât și prin sondarea nivelului propriu de culpabilitate, de oboseală psihică și morală, după întoarcerea acasă. Rememorarea este centrală întregului proces și, în consecință, preocuparea principală a acestei lucrări este de a analiza explorarea multilaterală a memoriei ca strategie de creare a unui spațiu de reconciliere cu trecutul și de gestionare a evenimentelor traumatice.
