Luigi Vietti. Prime indagini d'archivio su un Maestro dimenticato

    No full text
At the end of the last century, Luigi Vietti, one of the most prolific, unrecognized or forgotten figures in 20th century Italian architecture, passed away. The occasion of the deposit of his immense Archive at the CSAC of Parma has allowed a deepening on the professional work of the author, as well as the opening of a window on the architecture of the Italian twentieth century directly from who, that century, has crossed it almost completely both temporally (from the Twenties to the end of the Nineties) and geographically (from North to South, including the Islands). His participation has been very active, even if lived on the margins of a certain criticism and official publicity which, together with his lack of interest in spreading what he did, has meant that his figure and his work are currently little known. This article, and the entire monographic issue, constitute the first return of an ongoing inter-university research activity involving scholars from different universities in Italy and abroad

Old and new topics in architectural and urban design

The following article consists of the accompanying text of the call for papers launched by the FAM last April, when in Italy and in the rest of Europe, normal life was gradually starting to resume after the lockdown. The text was born as a collective reflection of the four authors following a series of discussions in which each brought certain aspects to the (virtual) discussion table. Although it was intended to illustrate the reasons for the call, it seemed of some use to the editors to propose it again at the opening to readers

    Starting from the (sad) reality

An architecture magazine has to deal with disciplinary issues also starting from the contingent reality. In this period, deeply marked by the SARSCoV-2 Pandemic, it appeared right, after the double issue Coronavirus City Architecture. Perspectives of the architectural and urban project, to go back to doing something.A consequence of the pandemic documented by images that have traveled around the world was the cancellation of the funeral rite of death which took place in many countries. From this reflection (and from the sharing and discussion of the theme with the editorial staff) this issue is born which aims to underline (and remember) that architecture is inherent in death and the rituality connected to it no less than many other central spaces in the life of the individual

Architectural sculpture in Italy as a compositional method. From impressions to principles

This essay is a re-elaboration of a lesson held at the “Sculptural Presences” Workshop of the CSAC of Parma on 23 July 2016. The lesson entitled "Architectural sculpture" started from the hypothesis that certain 20th-century architecture had an architectural design attitude that tended towards sculpture, without actually reaching it. Architectural examples have been identified since Rationalism and throughout the 20th century which can be considered "architectural sculpture" for various characters. The thesis subsequently opened the field to more in-depth reflection on the relationship between architecture and sculpture, and above all on some common composition elements in architecture and sculpture as well as on some tendencies of architecture to present itself as a pure formal act

With this issue, FAM experiments with the vast layout of a research magazine published at the turn of the 1980s in Milan and directed by Guido Canella: Hinterland. The school theme recalls the multidisciplinary approach typical of Hinterland which must necessarily converge in the project as a moment of synthesis. As well as the number 17 of Hinterland dedicated to the field of education, our FAM 56 is also full of historical-critical analyzes and planning reflections

The teaching of Architecture and the online Learning

This Manual aims to provide a framework of best practices for a blended flexible training activity in architectural Higher Education. In 2017, the year in which we built the application, within the ArchéA research we were interested in understanding how to combine ICT (Information and Communication Technology) with university teaching in Architecture. We thus hypothesized to experiment with the use of electronic blackboards, tablet and other instruments to be used in teaching, in particular, the architectural project. In practice, we were looking for tools that were useful in the project developed in the shared teacher-student activity laboratories

More on the relationship between drawing and project

Is there still a need to reflect on a classic theme of the disciplinary research of architecture such as the relationship between design and project? We think so, for a few reasons. It is no coincidence that many architects – defined Masters for their suggestion of a way forward in the project – have directly or indirectly expressed an opinion on this crucial theme of architectural research, reaffirming its importance as an irreplaceable tool. But the ultimate reason is the change in the boundary conditions given by the evolution (or involution) of the expressive instrumentation available to the practice of the project. Faced with the danger that CAD will turn from a tool to help drawing into a design tool, it is not superfluous to reiterate on the one hand the fundamentals of the design discipline and on the other the importance of hand drawing
