    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Noise pollution monitoring and environmental impacts on human health in Dehradun City of India are discussed. Major source of noise pollution includes transportation and frequent use of horn in vehicles. Dehradun is at a cross road and prominent national institutions like Survey of India, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, Forest Research Institute, Indian Military Academy, Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Central and State Government offices are changing Dehradun into a busy, economically active vibrant city. Noise pollution levels (50.70 – 82.54 dB) more than recommended permissible limits (30 -75 dB) are observed in the Survey Chock, Prince Chock, Saharanpur Chock, Gandhi Park and Clock Tower. Exposure to high level of noise cause stress on human health such as auditory, nervous system, insomnia, hearing loss, reducing efficiency, sexual impotency, cardio-vascular, respiratory, neurological damages and limiting the human life. The execution of an appropriate management strategy for limiting noise pollution on affected sites is recommended.     The monsoon seasonal rainfall record of Rajpipla area confined to Gujarat state of India, for a period of1987-2006, has been treated to mathematical and statistical analyses to observe variation pattern, future trends andtheir environmental impacts on groundwater regime. The mathematical analysis of monsoon seasonal rainfall dataindicates a fairly good range of variation from 321.30 mm to 1319.30 mm with an average rainfall value of 925.61 mmThe years indicating positive trend of departure from the computed value of average seasonal rainfall point outfavourable intervals for recharge of ground water reservoir. The cumulative departure from the average rainfall exceptfor 1998 and 2006 reveals existence of negative trend. The statistical analysis of rainfall data determines statisticalparameters, which indicate rather alternative variation pattern. The forecast of future rainfall trend for a period of nextthree years indicates an increasing trend in the expected rainfall amount. The environmental impacts of rainfallphenomena have been discussed. The strategy for augmentation of rainfall amount to enhance the groundwater rechargesystem for Rajpipla area has been suggested

    Chemical Quality Evaluation of Groundwater for Human Domestic Consumption in Saharanpur and Adjoining Area, Uttar Pradesh, India.

    Chemical analysis of water samples have played a remarkable role in delineation of groundwater quality for varied applications. In India, Saharanpur located in Uttar Pradesh, is one of important industrial cities, which is facing problem of good quality water supply during summer. The chemical quality evaluation of groundwater in Saharanpur city and adjoining area for human domestic consumption has been discussed in detail. The representative groundwater samples were collected from the shallow dug and bore wells existing in vicinity of Saharanpur. It has been observed that except for a few, all the samples are colourless, whereas all the samples are odourless and tasteless. The pH values reveal a range of 6.80 to 8.00 apart from those samples having pH less than 7.0 are acidic and unsuitable for drinking. Electric conductivity varies from 263 to 1259 micro mho/cm and most of samples are in range of 263 to 986 micro mho/cm, except Pilakhani samples having a value of 1259 micro mho/cm. Total Dissolved Solids are within standard limits indicating rather favourable groundwater quality. Based on the interpretation of chemical parameters and comparison of determined parameters with the standard prescribed limits recommended by Indian Council of Medical Research, Bureau of Indian Standards and (WHO) World Health Organization, groundwater suitability for the human domestic consumption has been evaluated. The chemical parameters suggest that groundwater is of Ca-Mg-CO3-HCO3 type and favourable for human domestic applications, except the concentration of Ca, Mg, and SO4 at some localities (more than the standard recommended limits) requires proper treatment of purification before water supply
