Joseph Bimeler letter to Peter Kaufmann, June 8, 1844
Letter from J. M. Bimeler (by Christian Weibel) to Peter Kaufmann, acknowledging receipt of Bibles and spelling books and ordering more Bibles. He repeats his statement from his letter of April 31, 1844, of a preference for Bibles that embrace the Apocrypha. The letter also requests a catalog of books on hand at Kaufmann's establishment.
Led by Joseph Bimeler (sometimes spelled Bäumeler) in 1817, a group of Lutheran separatists left Germany and eventually established the small community of Zoar in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. The group formed the Society of Separatists of Zoar, in which each person donated his or her property to the community as a whole, and in exchange for their work, the society would provide for them. After decades of economic prosperity, the unity of the village declined, and by 1898 the Zoarites disbanded the society.
Peter Kaufmann was a German immigrant and intellectual. He arrived first in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1820; in 1826 he became professor of languages at the Harmony Society town of Economy, Pennsylvania. In 1827, Kaufmann led the establishment of Teutonia, a utopian community in Columbiana County, Ohio, and published its weekly titled "Teutonia: The Herald of a Better Time." Following this he moved to Canton, Ohio, where he became translator and editor of "Der Vaterlandsfreund und Geist der Zeit" under Solomon Sala. Additionally, Kaufmann wrote a number of books on education, as well as a German almanac. He was also an influential Democrat, counting President Van Buren among his friends, and knew Ralph Waldo Emerson

Walter Kaufmann: Philosopher, Humanist, Heretic by Stanley Corngold
This paper is a review of the book: Stanley Corngold, Walter Kaufmann: Philosopher, Humanist, Heretic (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2018). The author concludes that Corngold’s book acquaints the reader not only with the thought of Walter Kaufmann, but also with the thought of a prominent, late twentieth century generation that in effect rejected the source of the very culture that nourished it
Is that all there is? Or is chimpanzees group hunt "fair" enough
Tomasello claims that we lack convincing evidence that nonhuman animals manifest a sense of moral obligation (i.e., the concept of fairness) in their group activities. The philosophical analysis of distinctive evidence from ethology, namely group hunting practices among chimpanzees, can help the author appreciate the distinctive character of this behaviour as a display of fairness put into practice
Armin Kaufmann (1902 - 1980)
This thesis was started with the aim of compiling a thematic catalogue of Armin Kaufmann’s
work, of collecting a biographical survey of his life and of illustrating his creative work as it
appeared to his contemporaries.
The music material found in the inheritance of Armin Kaufmann is partly available in the
“Musiksammlung der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek” (collection of music belonging to
the Austrian National Library) and served as the basis of the thematic catalogue. Another part
is available in the “Armin Kaufmann Dokumentationszentrum” (Armin Kaufmann
documentation centre) in Stift Ossiach (monastery of Ossiach, Carinthia), which was
inaugurated in summer 2009; these sources have also been considered. All “incipits” were not
just reproduced mechanically but have been produced personally by the author of this thesis.
Thus it was possible to locate obvious mistakes in some beats of the “incipits” – even in
printed works – and to correct them in the reproduction.
A catalogue of his works arranged according to opus numbers, produced in 1992 by
Mrs. Leonore Endreß in commemoration of Armin Kaufmann’s 90th birthday and edited by
the Austrian National Library “Musikalische Dokumentation”, was an important basis for
preparing further systematic catalogues. Incorrect details discovered by the author of this
thesis in the course of his research have also been corrected.
The biographical information was gained from a family chronicle dating back to 1684 that
was kindly placed at my disposal by Mrs. Elisabeth Kaufmann-Troppina, daughter of Armin
Kaufmann, as well as from documents and diaries. Conversations with members of the family
also helped to clear up details of his curriculum vitae.
A great number of concert programmes document the performances of his works. As far as
they were available they have been listed chronologically. From these programmes it was also
possible to compile a catalogue of performers.

How contemporaries, especially experts, reacted to the works of Armin Kaufmann becomes
visible in the great number of critical reviews which, however, have mostly been reduced to
passages concerning Armin Kaufmann. Forming an opinion on these articles is left to the
reader.
Last but not least: abstracts of memorial addresses have been included in my thesi

The state of water ::understanding California's most precious resource /
"Obi Kaufmann, author of the best-selling California Field Atlas, turns his artful yet analytical attention to the Golden State's single most complex and controversial resource: water. In this new book, full-color maps unravel the braided knot of California's water infrastructure and ecosystems, exposing a history of unlimited growth in spite of finite natural resources--a history that has led to its current precarious circumstances. But this built world depends upon the biosphere, and in The State of Water Kaufmann argues that environmental conservation and restoration efforts are necessary not only for ethical reasons but also as a matter of human survival. Offering nine perspectives to illustrate the most pressing challenges facing California's water infrastructure, from dams to species revitalization, Kaufmann reveals pragmatic yet inspiring solutions to how water in the West can continue to support agriculture, municipalities, and the environment. Interspersed throughout with trail paintings of animals that might survive under a caring and careful water ethic, Kaufmann shows how California can usher in a new era of responsible water conservation, and--perhaps most importantly--how we may do so together." -
