There is an obscure point in Ubertino da Casale’s biography: his action against some friars of the Spoletana Valley, denounced by Chiara da Montefalco, tried by him and condemned as heretics (Arezzo, 1307). Sources on the secta Spiritus libertatis, particularly the depositions collected for Clare’s canonization at the diocesan level (1308) and then as part of the apostolic trial (1318-1319), reveal
that, before being denounced, the inquisites assiduously frequented the monastery as chaplains and confessors of the nuns, unscrupulously addressing with them issues concerning the dark side of mysticism as a liminal space. Re-reading the entire documentation of the first thirty years of the 14th century, the author deduces that Ubertino’s polemic and then decisive action against the Spiritus libertatis aimed at marking a clear boundary against an experience perceived as dangerously close to that of the Spirituals. In this perspective, one understands both the distancing of Iacopone and Angela da Foligno from mystical doctrines they had previously held, and the awkward explanation
with which Angelo Clareno tries to justify Ubertino’s former frequentation of the heretic Bentivenga da Gubbi

Further to the author’s recent book Dante in conclave. La lettera ai cardinali, this
article returns to the question of the controversial identity of the “Trasteverino”, who had been
attacked by Dante in Epistola XI, and provides new grounds why he should be identified with
Cardinal Matteo Rosso Orsini. The article also proposes to identify two references in the Letter,
hitherto gone unnoticed, to two sermons by the Florentine Dominican Remigio dei Girolami.
Such potential identification allows formulating further hypotheses and questions regarding
the biographical relationship between Dante and Remigi

Insegnare nelle ‘scholae’. Il manuale di Pietro Comestore
Historiography occupied a marginal and uncertain space in the conception and organization of knowledge of the medieval West. The affirmation of history as a taught discipline was achieved only thanks to the remarkable text known as Historia scholastica. A cursory glance shows the Historia to be a keenly literal biblical commentary. Of particular significance are the "secular" events that the author gradually pairs to biblical events that he believes are coeval. These "incidentia" are helpful in bringing notable but extrabiblical facts within the purview of an expanded sacred history, while at the same time granting the biblical narrative depth and a human dimension, as it foreground its events in a clear chronological framework. Making use of a vast array of ancient and medieval sources, Peter also does not shy away from explaining in an original manner both complex passages and legendary tales, as showcased in a number of significant examples analysed by this essay. In particular, the superhuman prerogatives of Moses and the singular verse in Numbers (12,1); the fate of the star that guided the Magi to Jesus; and the tale of the ten lost tribes of Israel, to whose eventual return the Historia attributes the character of apocalyptic enemies surging from the East
The doctrinal origin of Sebastianism is often ascribed entirely within Portuguese popular culture. It is believed that D. João de Castro, inventor of the legend of the revived king, would have remodeled the figure of the Encuberto by taking it from the Trovas by Bandarra, a shoemaker from Trancoso. In fact, the rhetoric of the Encuberto was widespread in the Iberian peninsula long before the Trovas. D. João himself points out two other “announcements”, in the Vespertilio prophesied by Arnald of Villanova, and in the Sol obscuratus of the Oracle of Cyrill. More generally, this article intends to contribute to the knowledge of the vast prophetic and messianic library of D. João, and thus to show that the legend of D. Sebastião was born and developed at the confluence of multiple traditions circulating in Western Europe starting from the early Middle Ages
