Early Greek Colonies and Greek Cultural Identity: Megara Hyblaia and the Phaeacians
No full textSome recent approaches to the relationship between ancient cultures in the context of the Mediterranean aim at recalibrating the notion of identity in the early stages of historical development. Archaic Greece is a case in point: a traditional view highlights the role of early Greek “colonization” (8th-7th centuries B.C.) in forging a sense of Greek identity, that would have been elicited by contacts/contrasts with the inhabitants of the places where the Greeks established their colonies. Today, new perspectives emphasize phenomena like hybridity (the emergence of new identities in colonial contexts) and peaceful interactions, so that Hellenic identity per se does not hold as a historical category any longer. This paper explores the possibility of refreshing this notion and of exploiting it in the study of archaeological evidence of the early phases of Greek town planning (Megara Hyblaia, Sicily).Les premières colonies grecques et l’identité culturelle grecque : Mégara Hyblaea et les Phéaciens.
De récentes études sur les relations entre les cultures anciennes dans le contexte méditerranéen tentent de réviser le rôle de la notion d’identité aux premiers stades du développement historique. La Grèce archaïque est un cas intéressant : dans une vision traditionnelle des choses, on souligne le rôle de la première « colonisation » grecque (VIIIe-VIIe siècles av. J.-C.) dans l’élaboration d’un sentiment d’identité grecque, qui serait né des contacts/contrastes avec les habitants des lieux où les Grecs établirent leurs colonies. À l’heure actuelle, de nouvelles perspectives mettent l’accent sur des phénomènes tels que l’hybridité (l’émergence de nouvelles identités dans des contextes coloniaux) et les interactions pacifiques, de sorte que l’identité hellénique per se ne puisse plus tenir en tant que catégorie historique. Cet article essaie de revisiter cette notion afin de l’exploiter pour l’étude des données archéologiques correspondant aux premières phases de l’urbanisation grecque (Mégara Hyblaea, Sicile).Porciani Leone.
