Basin scale, high-resolution 3D facies modeling of tectonically-confined turbidites: An example from the Firenzuola System (Marnoso-arenacea Formation, northern Apennines, Italy)
No full textFacies modeling is an important step in reservoir characterization, because each facies is related to specific petrophysical properties, and the assessment of their spatial arrangement is key for hydrocarbon recovery estimations. Most datasets related to subsurface sedimentary basins in exploration areas are limited to seismic resolution, which is lower than the actual thickness range of the beds in most depositional systems. In that way, detailed studies carried out in the outcropping area of collisional margins can be used as analogs of subsurface reservoirs with similar geologic settings in order to better predict heterogeneities and properties distribution, with no limitation of resolution. This study provides an experimental 3D high-resolution facies model based on 5,500m (about 18,000ft) of bed-by-bed measurements divided into seven stratigraphic logs, collected over several years of field studies in the Marnoso-arenacea Formation (MAF, northern Apennines, Italy). It focuses on the upper Serravallian Firenzuola turbidite system, which was deposited in a highly confined inner foredeep during an important phase of growth and propagation of the Monte Castellaccio thrust and Verghereto high. The syn-sedimentary activity of these tectonic structures deeply affected sediment dispersal patterns and facies distribution of the inner foredeep that became, in the final narrowing phase, a piggyback-type basin and induced the coeval shift of the main depositional area to an outer and relatively wider basin representing the new depocenter of the MAF foredeep. The modeling has provided quantitative analysis of turbidite facies trends and a numerical dataset suitable for further geostatistical and petrophysical studies

Handheld-Impedance-Measurement System with seven-decade capability and potentiostatic function
No full textThis paper describes design and test of a new impedance-measurement system for nonlinear devices that exhibits a seven-decade range and works down to a frequency of 0.01 Hz. The system is specifically designed for electrochemical measurements, but the proposed architecture can be employed in many other fields where flexible signal generation and analysis are required. The system employs an unconventional signal generator based on two pulsewidth modulation (PWM) oscillators and an autocalibration system that allows uncertainties of less than 3% to be obtained over a range of 1 kΩ to 100 GΩ. Protein HU binds specifically to kinked DNA
No full textWe have purified the main four-way junction DNA-binding protein of Escherichia coli, and have found it to be the well-known HU protein. HU protein recognizes with high-affinity one of the angles present in the junction, a molecule with the shape of an X. Other DNA structures characterized by sharp bends or kinks, like bulged duplex DNAs containing unpaired bases, are also bound. HU protein appears to inhibit cruciform extrusion from supercoiled inverted repeat (palindromic) DNA, either by constraining supercoiling or by trapping a metastable interconversion intermediate. All these properties are analogous to the properties of the mammalian chromatin protein HMG1. We suggest that HU is a prokaryotic HMG1-like protein rather than a histone-like protein

No full textA quasi trent’anni dall’emanazione del Regolamento comunitario 2137/1985 che ne segna la data di nascita, e a venticinque dalla effettiva possibilità di costituzione, il gruppo europeo di interesse economico (GEIE) è ancora percepito, nella migliore delle ipotesi, come una specie di “oggetto misterioso” nel panorama giuridico italiano ed europeo. Lo scopo di questo studio, che ha beneficiato del sostegno economico della Commissione Europea e della Provincia autonoma di Trento nell’ambito del Settimo Programma Quadro, Azione Marie Curie COFUND, progetto “TRENTINO”, è di tentare una riconduzione ragionata del GEIE a categorie che siano di maggiore familiarità per il giurista italiano, indagandone le problematiche principali (su tutte l’assenza del beneficio della responsabilità limitata dei membri per le obbligazioni assunte dal gruppo) ed offrendo ipotesi di soluzione
